Update 1.1.12

We've got lots of good stuff in this latest update.

  • Some Conquest boards have been tweaked so the AI no longer hides in the corner, making it nearly impossible to get gold.
  • We fixed a problem causing the game to crash on some 32 bit systems.
  • The long time V-Sync issue causing your warriors to freeze up in combat has been resolved.
  • Added a launch option for windowed mode. Just add "-windowed" (without the quotes) to the launch options for Archon in Steam. You can also set the window size explicitly with "-windowed [width] [height]".

About This Game

Inspired by chess, but adding combat that YOU control, Archon was the original Battle Chess. You must try to outmaneuver your opponent using teams of fantasy creatures or monsters in this epic struggle of Light and Dark. On the chess board, when you challenge a piece, you are teleported into a Combat Arena where you fight in REAL-TIME until only the victor emerges to claim the square on the chess board. Conquer your opponent by defeating all of their pieces on the chess board or claim all the Power Squares for a quick victory! You can play Free-For-All mode, where it's everyone for themselves, or play using teams and gang up on your opponents pieces in battle (2 vs. 1.)

Archon:Classic can be played using USB controllers (the best way) or with keyboard and mouse. First developed in 1983, Archon quickly became a hit and instant classic because of it's unique combination of action and strategic gameplay. We've recreated it to play just like the original, but we've added enhancements for today's gamer. So grab some friends and experience the classic game that started the Action/Strategy genre.

Key features:

  • Up to 4 Player support...pure mayhem in battle!
  • Play in "Free-for-All" or "Teams" mode
  • USB controller support
  • Optimized to run even on on netbooks
  • 3 Different Boards (Modes) to play
  • 4 AI settings with 3 different personalities
  • Various spells to use
  • 18 pieces per team, plus others you can summon
  • Pieces gain experience and level up
  • Primary and Secondary abilities
  • Choose modern or classic icons
  • Fully Featured 1 Player Campaign called, "Conquest"
  • Conquest features 4 campaigns (over 60 quests)
  • Over 16 hours gameplay on Conquest alone!
  • Tracking and Statistics per game (fully featured)
  • Achievements and Leaderboards

System Requirements

    • OS: Win XP or later with .NET framework installed
    • Processor: x86-compatible 800 mhz
    • Memory: 512 MB
    • Graphics: At least 64MB memory
    • Hard Drive: 250 MB

I consider myself to be a "Retro-Technologist", meaning that I still have functional classic computer. I have a Commodore 64/128, and my copy of Archon still works on it. I bought this game, and the classic mode is pretty much perfectly done. I have done side-by-side comparisons, and can notice no flaws in the Classic verion. Even that is well worth the $9.99 price tag! Add to that, the updated version, and you're really getting a bargain at that price.

An excellent remaster of a classic (which by the way I've never played).
The gameplay itself is pretty well executed and can be addicting as well, that is if you play the game in "Free Mode" where you can play the core experience itself without any restrictions (by that I mean that all chess-pieces and their powers are available).
The campaign howewer can get awfully boring after a while, especially if you're planning to complete all 4 of them. I never did. I played the "Free Mode" instead where I can use everything I want to, choose the tactics on my own and I'm not forced to win a game with let's say, 3 "pawns".

A wonderful remake of the Atari 8 bit classic Archon. Graphics and sound are fine, but it's the great gameplay that makes this game so enjoyable.
The original Archon only had one game board and no campaigns. This game has many different game boards and some interesting and challenging campaigns. I've put a lot of hours into the campaigns and more than got my moneys worth.

The remake of this classic game is almost excellent! The graphics are modern (ok it might not be top notch like in Dota2 but still it’s a great visuals to performance ratio).
We have many new features which introduces a little bit more complexity to the original gameplay in respect to the strategic and RPG element of it.
The new features include: campaign mode (actually 2 campaigns for light and 2 for dark), different layouts (boards), secondary abilities, different kind of magic squares, different difficulty levels and finally we have piece leveling up (up to third level).

My only complaint is about the multiplayer - it should really be implemented as some sort of LAN or steam server matchmaking and not a hotseat.
Anyway it’s definitely worth the $10!

a remake of original Archon with
+ better graphics.
+ new layouts.
+ very similar gameplay.
+ singleplayer campaign.
+ multiplayer mode up to 4-players!
(it's possible for 2vs1 battle, should be possible too for 2vs2)

the problems are :
- the graphics are still not good compared to current games.
- the AIs are either too easy or too difficult.
- the (early?) campaign is just some repetitive battles.
- the multiplayer mode is only hot-seat. (no lan/internet)

if you were a fan of original Archon, have extra gamepads and
friends nearby to play with, maybe you can enjoy the game.

Game was great back on the NES, I'm glad someone finally remade it. They did a good job remakeing it at that, the modern graphics do the orginal credit, and there's an awesome campain mode to boot. Supports controllers and multiplayer.

I still can't believe no one picked this up when it came out, a faithful remake of a fantastic multiplayer game!
for those like myself who have enjoyed archon for years, online play is an amazing addition, and for everyone who missed this gem from the past : if you like the sound of turn based strategy mixed with furious action, check it out, it's cheap!

This game successfully updates the original 8-bit classic, updating the game with more boards and more options. It's hard as heck to beat, though. But it brought back the thrill of gaming in a way I haven't felt in a long time! A must for classic Archon fans! This is the real deal.... highly reccommended.

Awesome remake of an old (almost obscure) C64 game. Kind of like chess with mythical beasts except you get a chance to fight your opponent in an arena. I love this! thanks for the remake

Giving this a thumbs up because it's a damn classic and everyone should play it for a bit. On the other hand, it's aged pretty bad. Loved it as a kid decades ago, but nowadays it's just a bit too basic to hold my attention longer than a half hour or so.

An old fashioned looking game, but fun as it's a board game mixed with an action element. Not as good as Dark Legions though, now there is a game that could do with a Steam port and re-vamp!

I'm so excited that this game exists again! The implementation is clearly a little rough (you can tell right away from the menus), but the developers seem to have captured everything that was awesome about the original game and added a bunch of great new content.

This game is 10 cases of epic. Yes, it's a 2D Chess game, but it's BATTLE CHESS. You literally fight each other using the chess pieces in a 1v1 combat match for each piece. This is easily one of the most fun simple games I've ever played. I paid $1 for it during the Steam Summer Sale, but I would've gladly paid up to $10 for it. That's how awesomely fun it is.

Note that I did play with my nephew locally, so it may not be as fun if you don't play with other real people.

The challenges of the campaigns are badly designed. AI never attacks the player so completing some missions within allowed number of turns is not possible. Otherwise, it's an ok remake of the original game, although I see no logic behind the movement speed determined for each battle.
