The PRR K4 steam locomotive is a true American classic, and is the ideal companion to our Horseshoe Curve Expansion Pack which captures the glory days of the PRR. Proudly nicknamed the Standard Passenger Locomotive of the World by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the K4 first ran way back in 1914 and soon became a familiar sight all along the railroad as the PRR’s premiere steam passenger locomotive. No less than 425 examples were built by the time production ended in 1928, and the K4 carried on to the very end of Pennsy steam in 1957, having hauled some of the railroad’s most prestigious passenger services and even freight trains. Only two K4s now survive, but you can drive your very own K4 in Train Simulator! The K4 add-on is highly detailed and included such features as a glowing firebox, realistic weathered black PRR livery and brand new driver and fireman characters.

Pretty good and so is the whistle, now I would like to see an L1s, an M1, an I1s, and a T1.

In my opinion this is the best steam train that has been made for the game. Its fun to drive, you can actually see stuff infront of you out the engineer's window. The whistle and bell are nice. The model itself looks alot like the prototype. and you can pull an accurate length train to what these handled in real life without any major issue. Thumbs up for this.

I reccomend buying the K4 as soon as you get Horseshoe Curve. Looking at it alone looks amazing, but having it is even cooler. This marvel of the Pennsy is just a fine and overall nice loco to have in game, whereever you run it. My only problem is that it seems underpowered (or its just me) and that it doesnt come with anything else. Im not saying thats a bad thing, but it would be cool to see something else with it. The sounds/ looks are amazing and in conjuction with the map, its amazing and historical.

Nice model, but the whistle is from a Pennsylvania Railroad J1. (The proper whistle can be found on Railworks America.) Textures are a little sloppy, but it's not too bad. The biggest issue for me is the WWII scenarios don't match the model. In 1947, the PRR "modernized" the K4 fleet. This DLC models the "modernized" (post war) K4... however the WWII scenarios take place before 1947, so the locomotive should be modeled to look like the original (pre war) K4. The most noticable difference between the two was that the headlight on the pre war K4 was on the front of the smokebox with the steam generator behind it. When modernization took place, the headlight was located on top of the smokebox and the steam generator on the front, to allow easier access for maintenance. A platform was also added to the front of the smokebox to allow easy access to the generator. In my opinion, I would have payed a little bit more to have both the pre war and post war verisons of the K4, but great DLC nontheless.

The K4 Pacific by RSC is arguably the most famous steam locomotive that the Pennsylvania railroad ever owned and one of the best Pacific-types ever built, so when I heard it was going to be released for Horseshoe Curve I wanted one.

I will touch on a few of the high and low points below.

At first glance, the engine is a fairly good likeness of its real-world counterpart. There are flaws and deficiencies if one looks long enough. The textures are a bit simplistic and low resolution; rivets are actually two-dimensional instead of three. Truck and Brake detail, as well as spring rigging on tender is a bit simplistic and lacking in detail, deficiencies that it shares with the Big Boy DLC. On the other hand, the separately modeled bell, whistle, and safety valves are all very nice looking and give the locomotive a little extra visual “pop” that it would otherwise be lacking. The water scoop on the tender is present, however, it is non functioning and we have no track pans on the current iteration of the Horseshoe curve anyway. A nice feature is the glowing firebox; you can see the flashes of the fire cast a glow on the railroad tracks below the engine ( a nice touch). The power reverse reach rod and radious rod for the valve gear are not animated; they should move when you adjust the reverse lever.

Overall, the cabin interior is lacking some fine detail and polish. On the inside of the Cabin, windows do not open (they should) and are in a fixed semi-open position. However, the windows do have dynamic weather effects. The overhead roof vent does not open. Cab lights are non-functioning (there is an overhead lamp modeled but it doesn’t work, it should). Gauge lights are non functioning. Some gauges, like the speedometer and the back-pressure gauge are missing completely. On the plus side, the cab has working cab signaling and includes an engineer and fireman.

The model has a working head light. The tender backup light is non-functioning (it should work). Class-lights are slaved to the headlights; they only activate when you turn on the headlight (they should be independent of the headlight). A further disappointment is the fact that you cannot change the class lights; they are stuck on red (end of train)/last section). They cannot be cycled for green (second Section) and white (extra/special/unscheduled), something that should have been included and working.

One of my biggest pet-peeves when it comes to this game and its rendering of steam locomotives is the lack of enough particle emitters to properly model all of the steam and smoke exhaust from engine. Overall, the hodge-podge approach that RSC took towards modeling smoke/steam/sand exhaust was one of the most frustrating and immersion breaking issues with this engine. As I mentioned in my review of the Gtrax locomotives, I believe that they have the best smoke and steam effects of any locomotives in the game with the exception of the F.E.F. and Consolidation by Smokebox. Since those features are offered on older DLC offerings, one wonders why those substantial and atmospheric effects were not incorporated into this engine.

The K4’s smokestack exhaust and whistle steam are anemic. The exhaust for the cylinder co-cks is completely inadequate; you can barely see any at all. There are no emitters for the feedwater pump or injector steam exhaust, nor for the stoker motor exhaust. These should have been added and aliased the the HUD to turn on and off as required. There are no emitters for the turbogenerator nor sanders. One of the few bright spots on this engine is the functioning boiler safety valves, which are slaved to the boiler pressure. When you reach maximum BP the valves “pop-off” in stages one by one until the BP drops again and they shut off (overall a very nice touch). This single feature was clearly “above and beyond” what I would normally expect from RSC and it is all the more galling to realize that they put extra effort into this one effect and then completely omitted or screwed the rest of them up.

Sounds are okay, but there are some problems. The ‘chuffing’ of the locomotive exhaust is one of the better sounds for the DLC. There are sounds for the stoker motor, and feedwater pumps. Sounds for the cylinder co-ck exhaust only lasts for a few seconds and then cut out completely, leaving you with no sound. The whistle sounds nice but you cannot quill it (vary its tone, pitch, volume and duration by how much or little you pull on the whistle cord). And for some reason, sounds in the cab are very muted, almost quiet. The cab of a real steam locomotive would be much louder.

The control setup is fairly basic and takes after the Gtrax Locomotive DLC offerings. You can run the locomotive from the cab controls, but it was made to be run from the HUD. Feedwater/injector and blower controls move and are animated by activating the associated function on the HUD. The engine can be run in basic or advanced mode, but the controls are so simple you might as well run it in advanced mode because, honestly, the automatic fireman sucks.

One of the bright spots of this locomotive DLC is its performance attributes. As far as locomotive performance is concerned, the tractive effort and horsepower curve of the locomotive seem about right. AFAIK, in the steam-era, the K4 was rated for 6 to 8 coaches over the curve. This DLC engine will perform like its real world counterpart. It will take 6 to 8 coaches up the hill at track speed if you handle it properly. You cannot just pull the throttle out all the way, throw the reverser down in the corner and “blast off”. You have to slowly open the throttle and make small adjustments to the reverser to keep up steam pressure, (and using liberal amounts of sand for traction, of course). It is almost as if RSC managed to model the stoking effect that a draft has on a fire, feeding it and making it grow more powerful while giving the locomotive more speed. The engine speeds up and gains power in a sort of feedback loop (just like a real steam locomotive does).

On the plus side, the locomotive comes with five standard scenarios, three of which are offered in career versions. It is quick-drive ready and has 4 free roam scenarios. The locomotive is offered in the weathered Pennsylvania livery that it makes it easier to see the moving parts that would otherwise be difficult to see with a dark, glossy paint scheme. And besides, IMHO Pennsy steam locomotives look better when they are dirty and gritty. Unfortunately, no rolling stock is included with this locomotive, a real disappointment.

I must say that I am conflicted about this purchase. As a person who wants this franchise to lean more toward realistic simulation, this DLC offering ultimately left me feeling a bit disappointed. This locomotive DLC is okay; it could have been great if the content creators had decided to make it a little more immersive. More attention to visual details inside and out and especially a focus on more quantity/more realistic smoke and steam effects would have made this a much more immersive and fun locomotive to drive, its simplistic controls notwithstanding. I don’t expect every steam locomotive DLC to be as high quality as the Smokebox F.E.F. (though they could be and should be…), but a few extra details, and a little extra effort would have made this “near miss” into a truly good DLC.

Final Verdict: Yellow Block: Caution, hazard ahead. You may want to wait for a sale.
