Om dette innholdet

The Class 156 DMU, also known as a Super Sprinter, was built from 1987 to 1989 by Metro-Cammell as part of the effort to replace the ageing fleet of first-generation DMUs dating back to the 1950s. The Class 156s were all built as two-car sets, each set comprising a pair of driving motor units. Powered by 6-cylinder diesel engines, Super Sprinters are rated to run at 75mph and are used mainly for suburban and short-haul branch line duties. All units have now passed from British Rail ownership into private hands, and are currently in operation with a number of train operators including Scotrail, Northern Rail, East Midlands Trains, and National Express East Anglia.

**Please note that the Class 156 cannot be controlled using the in-game HUD driver interface or Xbox controller.

In the past, this add-on had a few bugs which sadly rendered the train for AI only use. Which was a shame. But recently this add-on has been fixed to an acceptable level which makes it useable in scenarios now. So that's a good start there. The pack comes with a nice amount of "base" liveries to get you started and there is a nice amount of freeware community made repaints available for this pack as well. However I have noticed that the "Regional Railways" logo is missing from the grey, black and two-tone blue striped "Express" livery is absent. Especially as "Regional Railways" was dissolved when British Rail was privatised between 1995 and 1997 which a sizeable chunk of the fleet passed to "Central Trains" and "First North Western" in the 1990's outside Scotland. I would have liked to have seen the Central Trains unit in the pack with the Central Trains branding as that TOC ceased trading in 2007 when the Class 156 fleet passed into East Midlands Trains and National Express East Anglia at the end of that year. So I am not sure why those names were not present in this pack as that would have been nice.

In terms of the add-on itself. I like the cabview as the position is nice and I like the layout of the controls. The passenger view is also nice as well. The sounds are reasonable and I am saying this because I would recommend getting the Armstong Powerhouse Class 150/153/156 sound set if you intend to use this as a player train in your scenarios as the experience with the higher quality sound set will be much better. However there is a slight inaccuracy with this add-on because the passenger access doors that are rear most of each car have a grab iron/handrail which is not present on the real life Class 156. While it is not a deal breaker to me, more research should have been done to avoid inaccuracies like this, However it is still a recommended add-on for your train simulator.

Overall Rating: 7/10.

Not quite sure what everyone is complaining about to do with this DLC. Yeah, I know it's old and it HAS had some issues, but DTG has fixed this. Even the sounds that it comes with default are'nt too bad compared to some. If you want the true experience though, get the AP Sound Pack. A nice addon all in all.

I dont why everyone hates this DLC. Sure it's not detailed but it's old. Anyway, I love the 150, 156 and 158 DLCs without any argument :D Definitely give all three a go :D

Class 156 Review

Model
The modelling is adequate at worst, it does the job fine. The bogies are good, but with a few minor inaccuracies. The windows are modelled instead of being flat textures. The Passenger View is alright, however it wouldn't be too much to ask for if the seats had different textures to correspond with the different liveries, even more seat variations would be nice. Overall, the details are fine. However, the textures a a bit dated, but that is understandable considering the fact that this addon was released in Railworks 2.

Sounds
The sounds are alright, but in a way it's not comparable to the modelling. It sounds far lower pitched than an actual Class 156 and the idle sounds play even when the train is accelerating. The horn is not the worst I've seen, but it isn't very good either. The sounds are set to play in a pre-defined length, meaning that you have to wait until the high pitched tone is over before you can play the low pitched tone, but at least it isn't a single recording of the horn, unlike many addons from this era.

Physics
What can I say? It accelerates like the real thing. However, the braking is far too heavy for a DMU of this age. The braking physics resembles a modern London Underground train more than a late 80s DMU.

Features
For an addon of this age, it is filled with features that are either extremely useful or completely useless. Let's get on to the positives first. It accurately represents the real thing by having seven steps of throttle. The Reverser has all 4 steps, Off, Neutral, Reverse and Forward. This means that you have to use the keyboard to move the Reverser to the correct position, something that I consider extremely useful as that taught me how to use keyboard controls instead of relying fully on the HUD. The Screen Wipers have two modes, which is practically useless as one mode is all you need, we'll get on to that later. Now onto the negatives, there are a few useless features that adds nothing to the simulation. Sure, you can say "but it adds more realism to this addon" and I completely agree, but are movable telephone wires really necessary when the destination blinds only show the destinations that are featured in the scenarios? A ScotRail Class 156 to London Paddington, anyone?

Effort
As for nearly every Train Simulator addon, there is always an elephant in the room and this time it's the glitches and the overall lack of effort in the April 2016 update. I will be splitting this section into two sections, the Pre-Update and the Post-Update.

Pre-Update
There is one game breaking glitch for this addon that completely ruins the experience, yes, I'm talking about the Door Glitch. Basically, what happens is that whenever the door opens, the game would crash instantly if the doors were in the camera's field of view. You can tell that this addon was made with care and passion, but the fact that this glitch made it through beta testing shows the laziness when making this. However, there is a bright side to this, the community has managed to fix this issue by editing the .bin files of this addon.

Post-Update
In April 2016, this addon was updated, fixing the game breaking glitch from above. However, the developers still failed to implement TSX to this addon, even though this should have happened nearly 5 years ago when TS2015 was released. This addon was taken off sale to be updated for quite a while now, given the fact that the community has already fixed the Door glitch, one might wonder what the developers have done in this time. There is no excuse.

DON'T BOTHER BUYING THIS ADD-ON. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

Absolutuely rubbish. I got excited when DTG withdrew this add-on. I thought finally they are going to fix it. But, no.

The Class 156 hasn't been fixed at all. It still used way too much fuel to be used practically. I've just this minute driven it the appproximately 5 miles from Edinburgh Waverley to Edinburgh Park and it used 15 gallon per coach, about 14 times more than it should. For god sakes it used two of those gallons in one minute while sat in idle at Edinburgh Waverley. It also still rolls like the town drunk even at normal line speed and derails due to "consist tilt".

Dove Tail get your finger pulled out and fix this now!

DO NOT buy this unless you want a broken train that can only really be used as AI. For those that don't know, this item was deemed so bad by DTG themselves, they REMOVED IT FROM SALE. This is why the release date above now shows April 2016, dont be fooled, this is NOT new!!

The train itself dates back to the early days of Railworks and so doesn't even have basic upgrades like rain on the windscreen. It's also not compatible with any kind of controller and if you try to use the keyboard, you have to get into the habit of stabbing at the brakes otherwise a nanosecond press too long and you're in emergency braking!

For DTG to reissue this at full price knowing its faulty is dishonest. Unless it's £3 in a sale and you really want one of these for AI in scenarios, run away!!!!

A very nice purchase for your RailWorks game. It comes in several liveries (Regional Railways, BR Express, ONE railways, Central Trains, Northern Rail (early) and ScotRail (from 2000). Tha\nks to our friends at DPSimulation, there are many easy-to-install reskins including Northern Spirit, First Scotrail and Northern Rail (current), just to name a few! It has a really nice passenger interior, although I am convinced that it is the Arriva Trains Northern interior.

There are, however, some inperfections, for example, If, when you have bought the DLC, you notice that the train does not appear in your quick drive list, that is because it is not quick drive compatible and you need to make your own consist in the consist editor (although, thankfully, the Richard Flecher reskins do come with quick drive consists). Another Imperfection is that the DLC has not been updated to TSX mode, so you will not be able to enjoy the rain particles on the windscreen of other trains and that also means that the headlights do not reflect off the track. If you can get these past you, then go and click the add to cart button and you will not be dissapointed.

Class 150 but longer, and has a passenger view. Probably the better one of the two, as it has scenarios for all base routes.

Beautifully rendered, nice sounds (for someone who has never ridden one of these). Unfortunately broken controller support - attempt to brake ends in emergency braking. The reverser is fickle, both using keyboard and controller. Some crazy framerate issues: framerate fluctuating wildly between 20 and 70 fps. Definitely more crashes than with other locos.

However, if you adjust your driving technique and learn to ignore bugs, you can still enjoy the ride.
