What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a very small self-funded dev team and we started to develop Just One Line, full-time, 18 months ago. You can think of Just One Line both as a software container –a framework– and a collection of quests, playable characters and equipment –the contents–. The game framework is nearly feature complete and we have an enjoyable content pack ready to be played. However, this content pack has to be expanded quite a lot and the framework itself must be polished and fine-tuned. Here enters the Early Access!
Your help is invaluable to us because, to be completely honest, we need to:
(1) Expand our community. We crave for players' feedback and we are not getting enough yet (can't never get enough of!). We could keep going on our own, we have set our ideas and milestones… but what is the use of a video game that only appeals to its own creators? Come and join our dev-family!
(2) Complete the game faster. Game development must be taken seriously. We do and we have our plan to share with you. We have put a lot of effort in the development process so far and we would love to keep doing so! If we don't go Early Access now though, the development will suffer and slow down. We are a self-funded team and we would love to grow bigger (both in terms of working time and employees), we need your help in order to expand our team and/or to continue to work full-time on the project that we love and that - we are sure - you will love too.
(3) Improve what we already got. We aim to deliver the best, high-quality, contents possible and we need your help for extensively test any aspect of the game. Also, our game is text-intensive and we have to ensure that the localization and the writing style are on point.
(4) Get more out of the game. With your help, we hope to add new features and contents, and also take unanticipated directions as the game development approaches the full game release. We want to bring User Generated Contents into our game and you are the only one that can make it possible.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to roll out the full game in 9-12 months. To be honest, it could take a bit less or much more depending on how much we stick to our original plan and how much we, as a team, may grow thanks to your help.
To complete what we planned in terms of contents and core features it would take 9-12 months. We would also love to explore new ideas and mess around with yours in order to make the game most enjoyable. However, that could potentially result in delays.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“During the Early Access we will address a number of issues, create more contents to add longevity and improve the gameplay overall.
  • The quest pack will be expanded with new quests. The starter quests might be improved with new story-paths. The more choices have consequences within the same quest or any other quest, the better!
  • Localization issues will be addressed and new languages support will be added.
  • The underlying plot, based on the lore of the game, that spans over the entirety of the core quests will be expanded and possibly new quests based on it will be added if the users likes this idea.
  • We would like to add skins and variants to the equipment system if we reach the consensus of the community.
  • Steam Workshop! We have planned to allow user to create contents such as skins and variants of armors and weapons and we would love to release the quest editor to the users so that they can submit their own quests. Basically, you may think of the quest editor as a level editor.
  • The quest system will be improved and some features might be added if the community finds them appealing.
  • We would like to test some sort of timed, score-based, online competition events. Both solo and grouped (by game profile, or other parameters) competitions.
  • Sound effects will be improved and more background music will be added.
  • The user experience and text readability will be improved.
  • Support to GNU/Linux (Steam OS) will be added. Support to MacOS might be added as well.
  • The online leaderboard will be improved.
  • Trading Cards will be added to the game and Steam Inventory systems could be added as well.

Please Note: we are not planning to and will do our best to avoid game saves to become incompatible over time or to wipe the online leaderboard. Should it be the case, we will give the users prior notice and try to work out the best solution possible to avoid any unexpected data loss.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game version we have submitted to the Early Access is fully playable and has been thoroughly tested. The game framework, or engine if you will, is nearly feature complete. It includes:
  • Adventurer (character) creation and customization.
  • Quest system.
  • Combat system.
  • Relationship and reputation systems.
  • Titles system.
  • Immersive/Non-Immersive game modes.
  • Adventurer progression system.
  • Equipment system and shop.
  • Online global leaderboard.
  • Offline local leaderboard.
  • Game options.
  • Multiple game profiles.
  • Cloud saves.
  • Achievements.
Contents:
  • 10 quests
  • 4 races (3 currently playable).
  • 10 classes (6 currently playable).
  • Equipment (80+ shop items).
  • 5 locations.
  • Aesthetics (3000+ unique combinations).
The main focus of this Early Access is to increase the game longevity: the quest pack will be expanded as the game development goes by. User created quests will be added via Steam Workshop to a separate set of quests.
About the plot: Even though the game will feature a main story, it will only emerge as more quests are added to the game. The main story is already referenced by other quests in the game at the moment. Eventually, one or more playable quests about the main story will be added to the game; until then, the players must think of the quests as tasks -or help requests- from the people of the Kingdom, each somehow linked to many others (by cause-effect relationship) sharing the same game lore and background but not the same main story, as a traditional gamebook would. The adventurer is not (yet) a "chosen one", but rather a lad/lassie seeking his or her fortune!

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

It will be raised when the game leaves the Early Access.
We believe it should be a privilege to be a part of the early adopters of the game, but we all know that Early Access games are –often– not as polished and bug-proof as full games. In addition, contents and game longevity are going to increase with time and it would not be right to charge Early Access and Non-Early Access users for the same amount.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Since the community IS the pillar of our Early Access release, we will be listening to each and every praise and complaint. We can't wait to hear your voice, have your feedback and fine-tune our development plan as both you and we see fit.
We will be intensively using the Steam forums and, possibly, our own forums. We will also set up a public roadmap on Trello and/or Reddit. The community will be able to upvote and submit new ideas. We, as the game developers, will try to maintain the original video game identity and make sure to do things in the proper way.
The community will also play a key role in the Workshop when we add user generated content support to the game. We can't wait to get you all involved in the 'making' of the game contents and quest library!

Demo Version & Game Balance (patch 0.12)

Greetings Adventurers,

Today's announcement is very hot!
Get ready for a whole new game experience in Just One Line thanks to many changes in the game balance. We are calling it "The Prohibitionist Update" as it shifts focus from relying -almost entirely- on drinks for power-ups to switching and upgrading gear instead. The Armory inventory has been completely updated in stats and prices in order to improve the longevity of the game and to set targets (weapons, armors or trinkets) for the players to reach more gradually than before. The game should feel more "right", challenging and rewarding now.

This is our first attempt to achieve the best game balance possible but it will not be the last. As the quest library grows many other changes will be made along the way. If you have not been visiting the Inn for a long while, this is your great opportunity to play Just One Line once again! We will wait for your feedback and thoughts on our Community Hub and Discord. And if you happen to be a new player, your opinion matters as much!
Please Note: we advise to retire any active Adventurer and start a new game altogether to fully appreciate the changes of this update, even if you just started a new game before the update. Should you encounter any major blocking issue, try using a different user profile or reset the profile in use.

A new weapon is available as a sword variant in the Armory: the Night's Scar. The Night's Scar was designed by the player Zeed in our first "Draw a New Weapon for Just One Line" (Facebook) Contest.
Kudos to Zeed! And thank you to all who participated!

If you want to create new content for the game too, keep following us on our social media and Steam Community Hub for future contests!

We have made a new awesome Steam Trailer for Just One Line:

What do you think, Adventurers? Do you like it better than the previous one?

Last but not the least, we have just made available the demo version of Just One Line, for any one of you Adventurers who are still feeling unsure about our game. Come and try firsthand what Just One Line can offer!
The demo lets the player embark on three epic quests from the full game with four unlocked backgrounds and three unlocked races to choose from when creating your characters. Demo players will not be able to retire their adventurers nor the send them to the leaderboard. The Armory will not have as many items as the full game. But, hey!, it is just a demo, isn' it?

Here is the complete changelog for the patch 0.12:

About This Game

Steam Demo Available!

Just One Line is a fantasy RPG gamebook-like indie game heavily focused on choices and their consequences, in which you may compete with other players in an interactive online leaderboard.
Create different adventurers by choosing their races and backgrounds and embark on a variety of epic quests: each adventurer will progress by increasing his/her renown and relations with the factions of the Kingdom thus unlocking new races and backgrounds for your next playthroughs.

Even though the core game experience is a text-adventure 2.0, anyone, of any age, who likes fantasy RPGs or books should give it a try. In fact, Just One Line has many great features appealing to a broader audience:

  • CHOICES MATTER
A lot of games say so, but a few truly mean it. Most of the quests in Just One Line are linked together and have different story paths according to your race, background, attributes and, more importantly, choices made in previous quests.
  • ENDLESS GAME EXPERIENCE
The video game itself is a framework upon which countless quests may be created and played. By exploiting user generated content and partnering with writers, Just One Line could potentially provide ever-growing contents!
  • YOUR ADVENTURER, YOUR STORY
Create your adventurers as you see fit. Start by choosing a race and a background, follow up with some aesthetic customization and finally shape him/her into a valorous hero or a ruthless villain. Their morality and honor changes according to your in-game choices.
  • WILL YOU BE THE BEST?
When you resign your adventurer you can compete with other players in the online leaderboard to be the most renowned/good/evil/rich(/whatever!) adventurer of the Kingdom!
  • HIGH REPLAY VALUE
Each quest has choices, or even entire story paths, only available after certain conditions are met and/or depending on previous quests’ choices! Every time you play with different adventurers, the story changes.
  • ALL ABOUT IMMERSION
We feature a unique set of locations with a fancy toon graphics and a mesmerizing OST to aid your imagination when embarking on epic quests. You will be amazed!
  • SHORT STORIES, DEEP STORIES
We believe that wall of texts are not needed for engaging desktop players. Quest telling is rich and thrilling yet not too darn long.
  • INNOVATIVE YET CONSERVATIVE
The concept of our game is a breath of fresh air! However, you can expect everything a role-playing gamer has come to know and love: races, classes, skills, magic, powerful weapons and armors… Oh! And dragons, zombies and pirates too!

Early Access Features

  • All Races (4 Races).
  • 7 Backgrounds out of 10.
  • 13 Quests and counting.
  • 5 Time-rifted quests.
  • Online leaderboard.
  • 23 Armors.
  • 32 Weapons.
  • 29 Potions and Trinkets.
  • Two languages: English and Italian.
  • Skin and Variant system for equipment.
  • Old quests get revamped from time to time (Time-rifts).
  • Achievements.
  • More to be added later.
The main focus of this Early Access is to increase the game longevity (please also read the Early Access section above): the quest pack will be expanded as the game development goes by.

Performance Notes

Just One Line is in development and undergoing optimizations. As the development continues and the community gives us feedback, performance will get better.

Please Note

We are not planning to and will do our best to avoid game saves to become incompatible over time or to wipe the online leaderboard. Should it be the case, we will give the users prior notice and try to work out the best solution possible to avoid any unexpected data loss.

Quests already shipped may be updated in the future and the prerequisites/choices/consequences in newly added quests may depend on those updates. This could result in some "plot inconsistencies" or minor issues if playing with adventurers created before given updates.
