Om dette spillet

A Zoë Mode production for the video game charity initiative OneBigGame, Chime pits gamers against the melody in an all-new puzzle experience. Place blocks against the clock, complete solid quads and try to cover the whole playing surface, all the while remixing and embellishing pieces by musicians from across the planet. And you get to feel good about yourself, too: The console version of Chime was originally developed for OneBigGame with all the developer’s royalties going to Charity for sales up to June 2010, and Zoe Mode will continue to donate a proportion of its royalties (equivalent to 5% of purchase price) for sales of the Steam version. OneBigGame always aims to donate a minimum of 80% of all donations to its charity partners Save the Children and the Starlight Children's foundation.

Key features:

  • Puzzle: Rotate and place shapes to form solid quads and fill up the grid before the time runs out
  • Listen: Chime features music by Moby, Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), and more
  • Remix: Fill the grid to alter the track loop, place pieces to play notes, and create quads to trigger a range of song samples
  • Replay: Reset the grid by reaching 100% and continue playing and beat your high score
  • Experience: Each of the six unique levels is made up of its own music, grid, and shape sets, including the new Portal-inspired sixth level: “Still Alive”.
  • Free-play mode: Choose between three different levels of difficulty or just play for the sake of making music with no time pressure

Lumines, Meteos, Every Extended Extra, Rez and Child of Eden. This game is a love letter to Q Entertainment. (Because its not made by them)

Chime is a block dropping game in which not quite Tetris pieces are randomly given to you to place onto the board. The main goal is to create quadrilaterals using the slightly unfamiliar pieces. I should mention the blocks do not actually “drop” You can place them anywhere on the board and as such the possibilities are greater so the game demands your combos and coverage to be better than traditional “falling” block games.

This game takes from Lumines more than the others. You build quadrilaterals and then a timer starts until it becomes solid in which you must add to it before solidification for more points and combo scores. Once solid, a bar that sweeps the screen collects the solid stuff you have made. And this continues until you have amassed enough to unlock the next stage. Its unfortunate that even in free mode you cannot even preview what the next stages song will be as unlocking new stages requires play in the timed mode.

The reason I say it borrows from those games is because of how the gameplay is integrated into the music. The more elaborate the combos the more flare is added to the music; and the music is phenomenal.

THE GIST
I was pretty big into Lumines back during the days of the original PSP. And this game captures some of that original feeling. By that I mean a good but new sort of puzzle game that is not exactly Tetris or in this case not exactly Lumines.

Unfortunately, Chime is a bit of jumble of conflictings idea.

On the one hand, it's a relaxing ambiance with soft music and soft colors.

On the other hand, it's a super fast paced gameplay

Theses 2 sides can't merge, and you end up with a frantic game where the music is just a total afterthought, you could definitely play it without music. As for the free mode, it's just too void of content to really be an interesting, relaxing experience.
