I have not played with many Star Wars games throughout my "gamer career" but what I do remember is the fond memories I have attached to Jedi Outcast. I believe it is supposed to be a sequel to Jedi Knight 1 which is the sequel to Dark Forces 1... all FPS games and very old now and completely missed out by myself.

In any case, Outcast is a blend of FPS and TPS genres. Both perspectives are available throughout the game and they determine the weaponry used to dispose of your enemies. Obviously, weapons such as blasters are for the FPS perspective while wielding your lightsaber is the easiest from a third person perspective.

The game has an excellent story and some recognisable faces appear here and there (strictly following the storyline of the trilogy from the '70s / '80s). Music is, of course, the good-old John Williams-composed score and since they are really good why would we need anything else?

The only issue with the game is that I remember playing it in FPS mode, at first, but once I obtained the lightsaber I finished the rest in TPS mode. I mean, if having a lightsaber is de rigueur in a Star Wars game then why would you want to switch back to the general assortment of weapons? Also, your lightsaber coupled with the many jedi powers available is the best way to play such a game.

The game can be difficult at times but allowing you to follow both paths (i.e. Light and Dark sides) it deserves a second walkthrough. Outcast runs on the Quake 3 engine which, years ago, was quite beautiful but now is somewhat of an obsolete engine. In any case, this is an all-time classic and you are to purchase it especially if you played it already 10 years ago. Collecting classics is always a good pastime!

PS: Widescreen resolutions are unavailable from the game menu - head over to wsgf.org to see the solution for the issue.

While Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy has better lightsaber fighting mechanics, this game is the better shooter. It has a good story and makes excellent use of the Star Wars license. Also, the multiplayer is superb. Unfortunately nobody seems to play the game online anymore. All in all a very enjoyable game.

I would recommend it to others. Gameplay is old but good, still very fun. The only thing that was irritating is the button mapping. It never turned out quite right. Maybe if I would have spent more time on getting the controls exact it would have been better, but then I would lose out on time to play the game.

Quite simply the best Star Wars game I have ever played (yes even including Knights of the Old Republic). A huge stup up from the first Jedi Knight game and the swordplay is probably the closest thing you will ever get to actually being in a real lightsabre fight. It's incredibly satisfying and well put together making you want to replay epic sections over and over again. The earlier levels are a bit dry before you get your force powers but after that, it's all gravy. For any Star Wars fan at all, this is an essential play.

Fourteen years later, it still plays better than Call of Duty. But in truth, these stormtroopers have a .01% chance to hit you.

As always old is gold !!! you gotta love the old LucasArts classics !!! and as a star wars fan, this game makes me feel really awesome !! One thing tough, there's really not much freestyle parkour sword + force fighting games that you can play with friends now-a-days...it's really a shame !!! We need games like this one ! i'd definately recommend it to everyone i know and meet in the future ! Game's really awesome,3rd person, it's like Mirror's edge + Star Wars Force Unleashed all together !! really love it ! and you can play with friends 16 peeps in map ! all lightsabering the ♥♥♥♥ out of each other, walking on walls like Matrix's Neo and force lightning your friends asses from time to time ;] amazing game ! definately 10/10 !!!

Jedi Outcast is the preceeding game to Jedi Academy, and it shows. Playing as Kyle Katarn instead of a semi-customized player character, the gameplay is considerably less polished. And considering how short Academy's patience was, that's saying something. This is the sort of game that basically requires memorization to get through, as you figure out after your tenth death this minute how to handle the next challenge by simply knowing where all the bullets will be ahead of time.

I haven't finished it yet and I don't know if I will, but the plot at least makes me moderately curious enough to press on. I don't recommend you fall for the same trap. Just play Academy and get a much better experience.

Update:

Finally beat this thing after a brief hiatus. My recommendation doesn't change, Jedi Academy is altogether a more polished and varied product. The absolute worst section of this game is by far the forced stealth section on the Cairn Installation. A stealth section included in a game with no stealth mechanics whatsoever and an auto-lose condition if the alarm is triggered. I don't think I need to explain further.

The ending is just sort of eh. After a tedious slog through some swamps where your lightsaber doesn't work and an AT-ST section, you reach the Yavin Temple and get to play around some extremely annoying puzzle sections (what is it with Yavin and puzzles? You do something similar to get your lightsaber in the first place) and have a boss fight with Desann in a large chamber with a giant ominous beam thing that's never explained in any way, and the game ends after a short "happily ever after" cutscene.

Kyle's a more interesting character than your bland pseudo-avatar in Academy, but that's about all that can be said in Outcast's favor.

This is one of the best Star Wars games. I've played it through again just few weeks ago so my opinion is not based on nostalgia. While Jedi Academy adds lightsaber moves and is newer this one has better story (not anything amazing but it mostly makes sense and that's more than what I can say about most recent games) and makes you appreciate weapons other than the lightsaber. The puzzles are a mixed bag, most are good but there are some that will make you run in circles (although usually you just need to look up to solve them). Jedi Outcast's strongest point is undoubtedly combat - a mix of classic FPS and great lightsaber/force system. Some powers/weapons are obviously better than the others but on Padawan difficulty level you can pretty much play around as you like. And play around you can! Force Pull stormtrooper's rifle from his hands and watch as he runs away in panic! Grab one enemy with Force Choke and shield yourself from his friends fire! Finally, I recommend playing with a certain cheat code activated - g_saberRealisticCombat 1 - It allows you to cut apart enemies a lot more than the base game (although it's a bit buggy and results in beheaded characters screaming and other weirdness. Nothing gamebreaking though). Word of warning - it makes the game both easier and harder since it makes some hit zones an instant kill (for both player and npcs). It causes shorter, more frantic duels with Dark Jedi and can end the final battle in seconds (which is hilarious when it happens). Overall I rate the game 8.5/10 (-1,5 for all the annoyances along the way). It's not a perfect game but still loads of fun and worth it's price.

It's everything we love about Star Wars

I consider Jedi Outcast one of the best narrative Star Wars games ever. It's a simple and straightforward story, driven by the most classic of action hero motivations: revenge. It's a fine line to walk for our Jedi protagonist, Kyle Katarn. But he's no Luke Skywalker. From blasters, grenades, mines and more, no weapon goes left unused by Katarn in his quest for answers. And yes, that includes lightsabers.

In fact, the Jedi Knight series still possesses the best lightsaber combat to date. Every swing, every thrust has the potential to be deadly, whether it's your lightsaber or your enemy's. No florescent batons here: swings cut through enemies neatly and quickly, as they should. Enable the dismemberment option for increased pandemonium.

The greatest con might be the series' age. The visuals definitely diminished with time. But see if that still matters when the game hands you a lightsaber, a room full of Storm Troopers, and John William's score begins swelling.

Oh, and did I mention they got Billy Dee Williams back to voice Lando? Because they got Billy Dee back to voice Lando. Awesome.

Nie traf ein so häufig verwendetes Sprichwort mehr zu: !!! OLD BUT GOLD!!!

10 / 10

Ein würdiger, durchaus zeitgemäßer Nachfolger zu Dark Forces: Jedi Knight und seinem Add-On Mysteries of the Sith.

This may be the best Star Wars FPS / 3rd person ever made. While it is old, it still contains a good mix of puzzles and action. Will never forget the first time playing it. Lightsaber trails on walls, wall running, and storyline all ahead of it's time.
A true Star Wars fan game.

If you play with bots on Nar Shaddaa Streets you can just use force pull from above to fling them into outer space.

10/10

(sidenote: I own this for gamecube and probably have another 50-100 hours there.)

More seriously, the plot is fairly shallow, but the gameplay is very fun - the possibilities are endless. I think the only two things I have against this game are its quick save/load times are horrible (which is understandable given how old this game is), and alt tabbing is sometimes weird.
