The engine is top-notch. Massive visual fidelity and scale, all implemented with stellar performance.
The game is bland, fiddly, inelegant, far too fast-paced for a tactical game, and somehow pedantic without attendant depth.

As a tech demo this is a solid 10/10. Not so hot as a game. Eugen fooled me once with R.U.S.E. and basically I'm an idiot.

DON'T BUY THIS GAME. If you are looking for anything remotely like Civilization then keeping on going. This game is not like Civ at all. They made hti sgame way more complicated then it needs to be. I tried playing it and I realized "oh hey, there is a learning curve. Alright I'll try to understand the game". One hour later... "Nah, it's just a piece of s**t. No learning curve, just bad mechanics." For everyone that has played this game and doesn't like the mechanics, you will undertsand what I mean. Why would I want the management of my troops be that complicated?!?!?

Also, an enemy helicopter took down: 1 AA Gun, 4 tanks, 3 Rifleman, and 2 Recon units. I had to call in 2 more AA guns and 3 anti-air infantry units to take down the enemy helicopter. Balanced much? And finally, the hidden units. Really f****** annoying when I'm just going along and then BAM! 3 enemy units appear out of now where and take down half my strike force in the area. And ya, I had recon units with me but enemy still hidden far enough away that it didn't matter.

3/10, could be a lot better but the dev's must have skipped community testing.

P.S. I forgot to mention this but the tutorial during the first mission sucks. Hard. Taught basically nothing considering how in-depth the game goes.

dumbest game I've ever played. Awful game mechanics, usless starting units, and an absolutely terrible in-game unit control setup. don't waste your money.

Picked up the full pack on sale. Have not put much time into it, trying to play in order of the games, This game feels outdated - feels like a game from the 90's.
Slow play with limited control.

Likely wont put much time into the game.

Would not bother with this unless you want some old nostalgia. Played better wargame type games on winamp back in the 90's though.

game is just silly. all you get for units are the ones the give you on each mission. The ai cheats and always has you severly outnumbered.

The best way to describe this game is: sink or swim. Oh, and your arms and legs are broken, making it very hard to swim. I got this game on sale months ago and quickly became frustrated with it. Well, I let it go for a while and decided to come back and try it again. It's not any better.

Most games start you off with relatively simple "get your feet wet" missions. Not this game. It pretty much just chucks you in the deep end. First mission is in Germany, you're in West German tanks fighting East Germans. You have four tanks to start with. That's it. After you destroy a few enemy units, you get an almost useless recon unit. He can supposedly see farther than your tanks, yet he can't find enemy units for you. That's what you have. What does the computer have? Way more units and the ability to cheat.

The AI in this game has the magical "God Mode" cheat activated, it seems. You face superior odds and most of the enemies you fight are in perfect cover. Their cover is so good that you can't see them until you're on top of them. However, they can see you, even if you're in cover, and shoot you. Their range is better and they have better accuracy than your units. Also, any enemy unit can take your tanks out, even infantry on foot. Now, I was in the infantry in the twenty-first century, and we didn't have much that could dent a tank. Javelin missiles were about it, and they couldn't be fired on the run. Back in the 1970s, they had the predecessor to the Javelin, the Dragon missiles. Again, those couldn't be fired on the run. However, the enemy infantry in this game has some kind of tank killer missiles that can be fired on the run. I call shenanigans on that one.

Most of the 3 or so hours I have on record were spent trying to beat the first mission. Sad as that seems, it's true. I finally got it, but I think that's mainly because I remembered where the enemy units were and managed to bring my units around and kill them.

Bottom line, this game isn't fun. The whole point of video games is to have fun. I don't know how it got such glowing reviews, but maybe some people love impossible odds and a cheating AI. I don't. So, I can't recommend it. The best two things I can say about this game is that the graphics are nice and I got it on sale, so I'm not out as much money.

Fantastic game. Why?
1. zoom system means that you can scale what you see from the entire battlefield to the regimental markings on a single tank - vast improvements over the RUSE system as well, the funny counters no longer appear
2. each battle escalates as it progresses BUT unlike RUSE which had a semi Age of Empres resource system, units appear appear from off of the board
3. the whole meta-game, for the first battle you play you actually only have a few units available, you need to unlock others as you complete the campaigns, play other people e.c.t. - your strategy will therefore be reflected in your army, did you unlock the artillery, or the helicopters?
4. I am actually a miniature wargamer, this game is like an epic version of my favourite game in real life - 'Battlegroup:Kursk' - there is a whole supply mechanic which means you have to really plan your offensives, and defensive moves.

If you like strategy, real strategy, then you may just be looking at the best game ever, I cannot praise it enough. If you are not so sure then I have had friends who have played this game and not enjoyed it so much: it can be confusing, complicated and annoying at first, but getting past the learning curve is well worth it.

One of the IF NOT THE best tactical RTS I've ever played: challenging, dynamic, replayable: If there's a Wargame: I'm going to play it :D And this is only the campaign, thus far. (120 hours under my belt since release and Airland Battle).

My ONLY criticism is not being able to save in combat, at least in ALB. I'd probably play it a lot more if I didn't have to commit an indeterminate number of time to it.

Very, very tactical AND strategic Cold-War-pocalypse game. Not terribly cinematic, but it makes up for that in realism and utter harshness. With hundreds of units to unlock and choose from, there's plenty to enjoy in this inexpensive game. Highly recommended for war fans everywhere.
