Awful game. I tried to like it. I really did but its flaws vastly 'outshine' its few unique features for a city builder.

The Cities you build are like static lifeless pictures with overlays. There is no sense that you are creating a community or a home with your Citizens looking like disgusting mutants that spawn and amble aimlessly around like robots outside buildings. From a technical perspective this game cracks after about an hour or two of normal play due to the infamous memory leak bleeding out of the game's poorly optimized source code. Any decently sized city will crack this game like an egg shell.

Summary: Its an awful city-builder that poorly implements its lifeless sandbox features. SimCity 3K has infinitely more going for it than this piece of shovelware.

Caveat Emptor. May the Buyer Beware!

I reccomend this game.

If it says loading and then when you click it twice and it crashes, reopen the game and do not toch anything. Thats how it worked for me.

If you liked the SimCity games, than this is your cup of tea; this game has plenty of depth and is plenty challenging for city builders. The trade system is a bit to figure out but once you get it you can really move your city forward with it. The only thing I don't like, is that you can't easily upgrade roads once you built alongside them, which makes dealing with traffic flow somewhat limited to turning streets into one way streets. The bus and metro systems are much better than in SimCity games, where you had very little control over how the lines would run. You can check out a lot of info on how your city is doing, from satisfaction per household to categories like shopping, healthcare and education.

I haven't noticed any bugs or flaws that some of the reviews were talking about, although my friend’s game slowed down once his cities reached more than 100,000 people. His PC specs were lower than mine so I would suggest have the recommended or a bit higher specs if you plan on making large cities. I'm enjoying the game plenty, well worth its money.

This is a great game with huge replay value! With so many city landscapes (Deserts, Mountains, Deltas, Plains, etc.) and transportation variation, anyone can essentially design any kind of city they like!
You build your cities by sketching out districts (housing, shopping and industrial) onto a sizeable map. Citizens are divided into four classes: Unskilled Workers, Skilled Workers, Executives and Elites. While they all have the same basic needs, they also require good access to specific places of work. Offices will need a mix of Skilled Workers and Executives, while heavy industry demands a lot of unskilled people to keep the factory fires burning.

One of the biggest appeals of Cities 2011 XL is the attractive and realistic graphics. These graphics are supported perfectly by the ability to create curved roads and bridges to give your city a more realistic feel (rather than the grid like experience of other city builders).

Avoid this game.
The game itself could have been good, but due to multiple bugs and very bad coding the game is close to unplayable.

First of all the game have severe memory leaks that will make the game slow down to a crawl or crash as your cities grow in size. This problem was first noticed at release and have not been fixed niether by the developers nor the rather enthuiastic fanbase of modders. This coupled with the games inability to use more than a single processor bottlenecks any gains from having a good gaming rig.

Second of all the game is allergic to Windows 64-bit systems. When the game came out this was not much of a problem. Nowadays however this means most new computer cannot play the game without errors. By now the developers have ceased any and all support for the game so don't expect any help there. Perhaps the modding community can fix this but it is highly unlikely and in my eyes a waste of time on a failed and abandoned game.

Put your money on a more deserving title.

One of the only games on Steam that has ever given me buyers remorse. The game is broken, doesn't even launch. Usually takes around 5 minutes and the launcher will just crash on its own. No help online, so it's basically a brick.

Cities XL is a city-builder with a lot of potential. Alas, design flaws (such as not knowing how to use more than one core on a machine) plague this and its future versions.

This whole game... is just "Eh." I imagine it's really in-depth and probably more expansive that Simcity, but I was soooo bored by the tutorial and scared away by the difficult to use user interface. If I'd gotten past that, I'd probably play this everyday.

I somehow ended up with Cities 2011, Cities 2012 and Cities XL Platinum. All of these games are the same with a few differences. I have put some significant time into them and enjoyed it.

Every game is the same. I am successfull to a certain size, then regardless of what I do the city seems to fail. Regardless it was fun.

This game works for me, the mechanics are very good for making cities on a large scale. Much better than Sim City games in my opinion.

Kind of wish I didn't buy this game.

I knew it has bug issues but it was cheap so I just wanted to try it out. The bug issues are VERY bad. The runs slow, crashes, lag, etc.

It is the PERFECT game idea though. Why hasn't a good developer made this game yet?

Instead we get SimCity 2013.

Really Great Game just like sim city but alot more to build. there is a slight problem when you save! after you saved te game and exit the game the 0% will appear next to the game just like they do when there is a game update. DO NOT EXIT STEAM WHEN THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE ITS KEEPING ALL YOU GAMES SAVED SO THEY DONT LEAK OR UNSAVE!

This game is just like simcity, but with waaaay better graphics and a lot more ressource management, which makes the strategy quite more complex. Also, you can build not one, but many cities at the same time! You decide which one you build and can specialize each one to produce something and sell it to the other cities you built! A worldwide network of cities!!! The concept is amazing, but the problem is that the game wasn't supported very well. It seems that as your city reach a certain size, the game start to slow down like crap and it start crashing with out of memory message, because the dev could not be bothered to correct this grievous problem! Even with 8GB of ram you will eventually reach that problem.

So it could be an awesome game, but instead it is heartbreaking to spend countless hours building your dream city to watch the game crash on you and you cannot continue (Because the city is too big for the game! wow what fun!)

So because of that insane bug that the dev has never bothered to fix, i do not recommend this game even if the features and city building is pretty awesome!

The 2011 version of Cities XL is much more single-player driven than the original but still suffers from many of the same flaws as the original. The linchpin of any city-building game, the transportation system, is still far too simplistic and gives no real challenge making the game a cakewalk once you've discovered how to many one-way streets.

The online component is, as in the original, shut down and defunct making the trade system broken and only adding to that nagging feeling that this isn't a game that should have been granted a full release.

It is just another shallow mediocre release in a series that never was anything more.
