Take advantage of an incredible collection of more than 700 buildings and structures, 47 different types of maps featuring realistic environments. Enjoy never seen before freedom in a city-builder!

As a virtual mayor, find the right balance between economic development of your cities, attractiveness, transportation (road traffic, bus, metro…), pollution, social services, taxes and even leisure activities. For the first time in this kind of game, Cities XL 2011 finally let you go beyond the simple creation of a city! Connect every city that you build in a trade network, specialize some of them so that they can provide for others, thus creating a large-scale economy balance.

Key features:

  • More than 700 buildings, structures and monuments inspired by various architectural styles.
  • 47 incredibly detailed and diverse 3D maps: mountains, hills, canyons, islands, cliffs, as well as famous places: Hollywood, Manhattan, Paris, Hong Kong, the Krakatoa volcano…
  • Connect cities that you build in a trade network, specialize some of them so that they can provide for others, and create a large-scale economy balance!
  • A sophisticated public transportation system: manage in detail the road network, as well as bus lines, and the underground and elevated railway.
  • Take profiles of your citizens into account to provide the services and the entertainment they need.
  • A self-sufficient global economy, controlled by price variation and by citizen’s needs in the game.

Avoid this game.
The game itself could have been good, but due to multiple bugs and very bad coding the game is close to unplayable.

First of all the game have severe memory leaks that will make the game slow down to a crawl or crash as your cities grow in size. This problem was first noticed at release and have not been fixed niether by the developers nor the rather enthuiastic fanbase of modders. This coupled with the games inability to use more than a single processor bottlenecks any gains from having a good gaming rig.

Second of all the game is allergic to Windows 64-bit systems. When the game came out this was not much of a problem. Nowadays however this means most new computer cannot play the game without errors. By now the developers have ceased any and all support for the game so don't expect any help there. Perhaps the modding community can fix this but it is highly unlikely and in my eyes a waste of time on a failed and abandoned game.

Put your money on a more deserving title.

Kind of wish I didn't buy this game.

I knew it has bug issues but it was cheap so I just wanted to try it out. The bug issues are VERY bad. The runs slow, crashes, lag, etc.

Mess.

It is the PERFECT game idea though. Why hasn't a good developer made this game yet?

Instead we get SimCity 2013.

Cities XL is a city-builder with a lot of potential. Alas, design flaws (such as not knowing how to use more than one core on a machine) plague this and its future versions.

This game is just like simcity, but with waaaay better graphics and a lot more ressource management, which makes the strategy quite more complex. Also, you can build not one, but many cities at the same time! You decide which one you build and can specialize each one to produce something and sell it to the other cities you built! A worldwide network of cities!!! The concept is amazing, but the problem is that the game wasn't supported very well. It seems that as your city reach a certain size, the game start to slow down like crap and it start crashing with out of memory message, because the dev could not be bothered to correct this grievous problem! Even with 8GB of ram you will eventually reach that problem.

So it could be an awesome game, but instead it is heartbreaking to spend countless hours building your dream city to watch the game crash on you and you cannot continue (Because the city is too big for the game! wow what fun!)

So because of that insane bug that the dev has never bothered to fix, i do not recommend this game even if the features and city building is pretty awesome!

The 2011 version of Cities XL is much more single-player driven than the original but still suffers from many of the same flaws as the original. The linchpin of any city-building game, the transportation system, is still far too simplistic and gives no real challenge making the game a cakewalk once you've discovered how to many one-way streets.

The online component is, as in the original, shut down and defunct making the trade system broken and only adding to that nagging feeling that this isn't a game that should have been granted a full release.

It is just another shallow mediocre release in a series that never was anything more.

Memory leak problem, single core optimized, etc.........This game is very good (I would say a successor to Sim City 4 - the last great city building game) but I would only say this if Focus Interative was the one who built the game's source code by themselves and not buying over unpolished source code from another developer. They never tweaked any of it, left it, and just added additional features to the code. This is why, they can't fix the memory problem or the single core issue (to preferably dual core+) because it was not their code to begin with and would take too much time to figure it out for them (plus they got a deadline to meet from the publisher so they rushed on this). What I don't understand is that, when players of 2011 and below suffers from this lag problem where when you hit 500000 inhabitants and massive buildings(I also have MODS from third party; but has no effect on memory), they didn't happen to fix that in Cities XL 2012/Platinum....it goes into a -10 FPS type of situation and makes you don't want to play it again, just because I have such a huge database infrastructure created in my map that is causing this? NO, THIS IS A CITY BUILDING GAME, IT IS SUPPOSE TO HANDLE ♥♥♥♥ LOADS OF STRESS. What do you want me to build to keep the FPS at a 'considerable' range; 5 houses and a power plant? fu; plus this game is a waste of performance for me because having SLI GTX 780's with 16GB of G. Skill memory doesn't even cut out for this. Sad.

However, very fun gameplay! good soundtracks! (very excellent), details to the smallest margins (except the people, they're ♥♥♥♥ing trolls), and detailed environments.

At first glance this is an excellent alternative to Sim City, especially since that series took a massive hit earlier this year for that... thing EA released. But this really isn't. The resource system is workable, but it inevitably means that you have to build several small cities that produce specific goods in order to support the megalopolis you actually want to build. But the real killer for this game is the poor optimization. My computer may be weak, but no game should croak like this one does after having only played for an hour or so. It gets worse the larger your city gets, and so ultimately just when you are finally getting your super-city, you can barely even see it because the game lags so much. And if you can't even mess with the crazy city you make... what's the point?

Save your money on this and pretty much everything else from this series released thus far. As far as I can tell, they all have similar or worse problems.

Mediocre, poorly designed, badly performing, money grubbing garbage that is NOT an improvement over the previous game, which was also mediocre, poorly designed, badly performing garbage. This is a re-release of a broken product, and I was an idiot to buy it. There is too much wrong with this game to even begin discussing it in this small Steam review space. Deleted and forgotten.

Most likely the best city building game ever made!!

This game is like all the other Cities XL games.

They are stupidly complicated, beautifully designed with some amazing features that really really drag you into the game, and make you feel that what you've created is well worth it.

You use a money cheat in the game, fine... It does not mean anything because the city goes on money coming in and not the money you have, it is super hard to get a proper city going and when you actually get going I bet you will feel amazing because you've physically created something that is well worth it.

This is the best city building game ever made and I own ALL the cities XL games, and I wish they added a multiplayer elemant to it. Not sure how it would work but I would love to see it.

Worth it, buy it!

I was hoping that this could rival the great Simcity series and, unfortunately, it didn't even come close. The game's controls and feel just didn't feel right and you never really feel connected to your city. That being said, the graphics are pretty fantastic which, unfortunately, means that is where the focus of the development was spent. Bad choice.

Probably the closest thing we'll get to a Simcity update, which is sad. because this pales in comparison to Simcity 4. Stiill good though.

Do not buy this, memory leak makes the game unplayable once your city starts to get somewhat big.
