Ever wanted to play a game where you pretend to be a sys admin while under the guise of a tower-defense (TD) game? The answer to this is of course, no. Regardless, System Protocol One exists and it succeeds in being a unique and interesting TD game, while delivering a theme that those of the IT world will be able to enjoy.

The gameplay is simple enough, drop programs (towers) onto a grid, viruses (creeps) will run through the grid and your programs will attack the viruses hopefully killing them before they reach the exit. Standard towers and creeps with their strengths and weaknesses that you'll have to be constantly aware of. Creep waves and maze-building; all the standard TD boxes ticked.

System Protocol One's twist on the genre is that the maps are actually 3D objects that will require you to spin around on the different axises (axii, axisii?) so that you can fully understand the map. The simple levels will have you on a flat playing field. But quickly you'll start encountering cubes, tubes, and ribbons. Building a maze on a 3D object is a great mental exercise that will force you to think in directions you normally would not have to worry about in a TD.

Another genius gameplay feature that I haven't seen done elsewhere is how the game allows you to speed up the waves. Most TDs just give you a 'go faster' button which let you skip the downtime. In System Protocol One, the 'go faster' will actually advance the next wave onto the board, regardless of how far you are into the previous wave. So now you have 2 waves running through the level at the same time. Think you can handle 3 waves at the same time? Then push that advance wave button again.

And what's best is that the game encourages this. The game looks you square in the face and goes "I bet you a score multiplier that your maze won't take another wave". Clicking the advance button will greatly increase your score. And the earlier you do it, the bigger the reward. They've taken the fast-forward button and turned it into a critical risk-reward system that will be the difference between a leaderboard-topping score and a mediocre one. This feature alone makes System Protocol One stand up amongst the crowd.

Seriously, this game should be in every TD-lover's collection.

Well, the graphics and music might be a deterent for some people. The graphics are (purposely but nevertheless) simple and the 8-bit tunes - while catchy - become quickly repetitive. And I'm not really sure how the computer-programming backdrop for the game would appeal to non-developers. This is a theme that you're going to love or hate, which is a shame as some people will be missing out on some gold gameplay because of this.

So, System Protocol One. I cannot recommend this enough. It's strange how this title seemed to slip through the cracks unnoticed by the world at large. So please, get a copy of the game, turn up the chiptunes, start plonking down those pieces, and then hit that advance wave button. Go on. I'm sure your maze can handle it.

Honestly, this game is fantastic and was an amazing game from the moment I opened the game the very first time. The soundtrack is also glorious, especially my favourite song, Diskettamine, and really lends the game a beautiful and atmospheric tone while also conveying the urgency of the situation, even before the panic effects of the songs kick in.

I think this game deserves more recognition than it's gotten, as it is just as complete and unique as any tower-defence game I've played thus far. So, honestly, yes...I would recommend this game hundreds of times over. It's easily a 10/10 if you take a little time to learn the game on the easier difficulties before finally opening up a two-plane server on Frumious.

tower defense with a sweet chiptune techno soundtrack that will haunt your dreams. the gameplay balance and graphics hit just the right tone of seemingly simplistic and yet richly rewarding.

Looking back, this is probably the best tower defense game I ever played. It's got some serious flaws though, including a whole section you can't play because they changed the way compressors work and never fixed the levels. Also most of the towers are useless. All you really need are walls and ping cannons for the ping cannon god.

First off let me say, this is Tower Defense done right. Even with the lack of a plethura of towers to chose from, this game makes you think about how you play and what towers you put where. Most other tower defense games will allow one super tower to be massed and blow everything out of the water with no problem at all, but these developers made it a priority to tell people that just one tower will never work.

While I will say that every tower defense game playe should own this, I'll also say that for the price it's a bit lacking. If you can get it on sale, do not hesitate to add this to your game library!

Released in 2010, System Protocol One is a network security themed tower defense game. The graphics are what you would expect from a game with this theme. This day and age, there is a proverbial flood of tower defense games available. In the now tiring genre of tower defense, this game does little to set it self above the rest and while it does have a few unique aspects in my opinion it's ultimately not worth playing.

One notable issue I had with the game was pacing. The tutorial was a painful bombardment of game mechancis; unlike Defense Grid, which paces various mechanics over several levels so you can get familiar with them, this game slams you with all of them at once and throws you into game to engage in a trail and error process of figuring it all out. I have also noticed issues with the difficuty pacing where certain waves will drastically increase in difficulty.

I digress, but as a systems administrator, I felt like the developer could have done something more clever with the conept of "maintaining uptime" while "securing the network", as hinted in the tutorial. Sadly it seems the only implentation of this concept is the need to keep at least one open path.

The game does have some unique aspsects, and if you like tower defense games you might appreciate this game. However if your are more or less neutral towards these sort of games there are better options available if you are in the mood for tower defense.

This game wasnt bad when it was released but tower defence games have moved so far beyond this one that I just can not recomend it. Especially with great titles like Defence Grid, Defenders Quest, Fieldrunners 2, or even Prime world: Defenders. System protocol One is simply completly dated, and not in a lovable, retro, nastalgic way either. Its not a terrible game please dont misunderstand, it is just in a genre with great games that have completly raised the bar of standards and expectations beyond what this game now offers.

Ugh. I loooove tower defense games but this one is dreadful. After the lengthy and tedious tutorial my first game was so annoying I didn't even bother to finish. Those are minutes of my life I will never get back.

This is your basic tower defense game. Not very intuitive with a steep learning curve. It does have a tutorial, but it is extremely long-winded with too much information covering all the game complexities by brute force. I ultimately learned more in 5 minutes of real gameplay using trial-and-error than 30 minutes spent in the tutorial. Tron-like vector graphics are nothing spectacular. No wow factors. Easy to lose interest.

I've played a lot of tower defense games, and none on Steam have been able to scratch the itch like System Protocol One. Gameplay is solid, no stupid quirky mechanics, and the graphics are undestracting.

I usually don't like Tower Defence games but this was EXCELLENT, the tutorial is boring as hell though, Just bare through it, the gameplay is amazing, It's not the same old boring thing twice, Change your Landscape from Flat to tube to ribbion and so many others i haven't even unlocked yet.

A brilliant take on the Tower Defence archetype, SPO is challenging, slick and addictive. The multi-dimensional levels are a must to try, and the background story & tutorial have an amusing tongue-in-cheek charm.

System Protocol One is a very themed tower defense. Not only that but it does a good job creating both the tower defense and the central theme without sacraficing one for the other. The gameplay is what you would expect from a block based tower defense. You have your standard array of rock-paper-scissor enemies and towers and for the most part there is no one correct way to win. Mind you, the game can be a tad unforgiving on higher levels almost requiring you to do the "correct" build to win. And as always, there will be those who choose to juggle. I find juggling to be a cheap exploit, and if the game relys on you doing it to win then the game is fundamentally flawed in terms of balance. But overall System Protocl One is worth the price. It may be a bit too unforgiving for some, but it is still enjoyable.

This is a tower-based game, played on a variety of fields which might have 3D topology or complex, mixed paths of enemies going to their own target destination. The initial levels are mildly difficult; ie, you can easily lose if you make mistakes, and the later levels get really hard, especally to kill early boss waves.

If you like techo/ambient then the music will be decent; otherwise, "retro". Give it an 8/10.
