About This Game

The First Templar follows the story of two main characters – a French Templar, and his companion, a noble lady who has been proclaimed a heretic. Taking control over these two unlikely allies, the player must uncover the mysteries behind the Templar Order, play a role in a grand conspiracy, and discover the secret of the Holy Grail. The heroes face powerful opponents at every turn, including Sacracen, King Philip the IV of France and the Inquisition.

The First Templar features both single player and co-op modes. When playing solo, the player can switch between the two characters, leaving the control of the second hero to the game’s AI. At any moment a second player can join in and take control of the AI-controlled hero.

The First Templar starts out with an exciting introduction, with great combat gameplay and a diverse skill tree which you can choose to go down certain routes with different characters! ^>_<^ Love the scenary, specifically the forrests and trails that you can follow. If you love combat games with fantastic scenary and a mission set route to follow; this game is for you.
I have taken over 50 screenshots of moments I have enjoyed so far, many of which included achievements.
- Great for RPG / Combat lovers.

picked up this game to play Co-op but found that the desync and lag made it unplayable, would see doors open and closed at the same time, repeating voice overs, just over all really slow. We have looked and sadly found no guides or information on how to fix this issue, so who knows might be worth the buy if it works for you lol

Kalypso takes your money AND force you indirect to be on Facebook!

To play this game online with a friend, you need a Facebook-profile to do so … in other words, if you don’t have a Facebook-profile, you are forced to open at Facebook-account in order to have fun coop-game with a friend.

So if you don’t have an account on Facebook, maybe because you don’t like the idea of having a facebook-profile, then DO NOT buy this game – otherwise you have spend money on nothing!

I do wonder why Kalypso have their games on Steam, when Kalypso don’t allow their games to run on Steams servers.

I like to have ONE account – ONE server to play my games by. I find it ridiculous to need several of servers to play my different games – and that is why I have a Steam-account – to play my online-games at ONE place!

I wish that Steam wouldn’t sell games which can’t be played on Steams own servers, because I don’t want to open all kinds of account everywhere. I want ONE account, ONE server from where I can play my games.

I hope that other whom read this will back me up and complain about this ridiculous policy to force us gamers to need many different servers and accounts (and now Facebook) to be able to play expensive purchased games bought on Steam.

This is a really OK game. Nothing really stood out to me that made this anything other than a very generic hack and slash adventure game. The levels are extremely one-way. The move set you have is very limited...I basically finished the game by only using the main basic attack (left click), there is no other attacks available...

The story is horribly slow paced and dull, characters are no better, they all seem very bland and uninteresting.

This is also a really bad port, you are unable to play in 1080p, you have to set your resolution to something weird...that is just unacceptable in this age of pc gaming. I also experienced some frame rate drops, but this was fixed by using vsync.

The one and only redeeming factor is that you can do local co-op, this is something which is an instant bonus in any game as it adds to the fun factor of being able to sit on the sofa and have a laugh with a buddy while playing a poor game.

Skip this one.

Got it on sale for $3, still wishing I hadn't made that stupid decision of dumping 3 bucks on this one. I believe most of my frustrations about this game have already been covered by older reviews, but I'm still gonna rant about it for the heck of it anyway. First off, the graphics leave a lot of room for improvements, nothing special, generic and plain, although at times it can look kinda pretty, hit and miss mostly. Characters look funny, though this can be a matter of opinion, and they move in an awkward manner as if someone glued a giant board to their backs. As an avid fan of open world game, this game dissuaded me from playing due to its linear gameplay, you don’t have the luxury of going wherever the heck you want. Combat is forgettable and unimpressive.
Though I can tolerate some of the stated flaws, my main beef with the game is the control. REVERSE MOUSE CONTROL. And the game doesn’t even have an option to change that. “Oh, you’d like to see where you’re going? How about we show you the ceiling instead? Isn’t the sky just lovely today?” Simply put, you point up, the screen goes down and vice versa. I was struggling with it and it felt like most of my effort in playing this game went into maintaining a proper field of view. On a side note, when I finally got somewhat used to the stupid control, I went back to playing other games with NORMAL mouse control and it all went bananas for me as once again I had to struggle to revert to how I used to play those game before I had to adapt to the clunky control of this game.
Can’t say anything about the plot because I haven’t gotten very far in as evidenced by my playing time and because everything about this game just discourages me completely. My advice, don’t waste your money on it even on a sale, and if you’ve made the mistake that I did? Don’t repeat my mistake of wasting time with it. Bury it in your backlog.

Couldn't play this more than 10 minutes. Broken animations , very linear , dumb AI , took two regestrations to get in the game , boring combat, weird graphics and a terrible game. There is no pros for this game. This game Isn't worth the price even if it's on sale for 4,99$

I bought this game to play co-up with my friend.

But the first thing that hit me is, that you can't play on Steam, but have to login on Kalypso's server, which p!sses me off - because I chose Steam, so that I don't have to login to another system when I want to play.

So already here, Kalypso fails.

I then find out I need a facebook profile (which I hate with all my heart) to be able to play with my friend.

And because of this, I am done with Kalypso.

I do wish that Steam wouldn’t allowed games that don't want to be play on there system.

Utter garbage with overly restrictive drm! Avoid at all costs and don't let curiosity get the best of you. There are plenty of better third-person action games than this. Hell, The Witcher 2, AC:Revelations, AC:Black Flag, Dark Souls I & II, Onimusha, etc. Catch them on a good sale at least. So please save your hard earned money and spend it on something worth your respect, you've earned that.

This game is far below the industy standard, even for an indie it's quite bad.

The movement is clunky, the character doesn't do a full rotation when moving it only has four sections where the character just jumps too and it's really off-putting, adding onto that there is no jumping so it kind of takes away the freedom of free movement and it feels like playing laggy ball simulator 2014.

The gameplay was mediocre, the cutscenes were using the same base animations over and over and it sometimes cut the diologue short in which case when you miss like 10 seconds of the dialogue you missed the clumped together story.

The story feels last minute, very little depth but they made sure to over complicate it with big names and 5000 random characters they want you to remember but never introduced to any of them.

Just a bad game, i wouldn't recommend buying no matter the price.

A decent, fun game with a good amount of historical facts.

My game rating: 74.5 / 100

Graphics: 65 / 100
Whilst character graphics are done fairly well, I feel as if the ground was not given enough details. Graphics could definitely be better, but they still fit in quite well and do not ruin your experience.

Story: 78 / 100
It is true that the story feels slightly unchanging. For most parts of the game you are infiltrating castles or camps, but the story itself does keep you interested and hungry for more. Furthermore, aside of the storyline of the game, it offers you the story of the knight Templars in small portions that you get by discovering stone tablets. I have enjoyed this addition very much as it brings the age of Templars alive and closer to you.

Combat mechanics: 76 / 100
As everything else in the game, combat is developed to that point where you just begin to like it. Trick with the combat module in this game is that there are 3 characters that you may chose to control at any time during the game, and all 3 of them have different skill trees that come with different attacks. As you progress through the game, you may chose to upgrade your attack moves and unlock new ones. Game also offers huge difficulty spikes between the difficulty modes which is great in my opinion. This allows you to chose whether you would like to go through the game without much stress or perhaps chose a more realistic mode. Sometimes you also get awarded with a kill cam. I enjoyed it.

Fun factor: 79 / 100

Is the game worth its price (14eur)? I am not sure, it depends what you are looking for. If you do buy it, do not forget to check out the Arena.

This game may have passed for an excellent action game in the early 2000s, but for a game release in 2011, this game is rather sad. The voice acting is spot on, however the characters themselves are a bit...two dimensional. There's "funny" banter here and there.

The fighting is lathargic once you get the hang of it. Having three, well, two different fighting styles would be interesting, however this game doesn't pull it off too well.

Wish I could recommend this but there are too many problems. First off, the combat. You basically mash the one attack because you can only use other buttons for special abilities when you've built up enough zeal so it gets super repetitive fast. You only use the same weapon throughout the entire game without upgrading it. As for leveling up. Although you can upgrade traits it is mostly just "more health/zeal/damage" or a few different special attacks, but they all require zeal, which is stupid because then you will just be using one of the attacks so you're basically replacing the attacks you just leveled up, but never changing your basic boring attack which becomes not as effective. In combat that are problems. They throw you into combat fighting groups of 6 guys that just attack you from behind while you try to attack someone else. And to make this worse, blocking wont turn you to block the guy attacking you, meaning if you're attacking some guy and stop and try to block the person attacking from behind you'll still get hit, which is dumb. Enemies can for some reason be in the middle of getting hit by your sword combo and just start attacking you, making you trying to do combos useless. You would think there is a pattern, but you have no idea when they'll do it making you just want to attack once at a time. Also there is only 1 way to break shields and they always can and will attack you when you are forced to do it. Enemies can hit you even when out of range and hitboxes on enemies sometimes aren't right. The levels get boring as its the same thing of you running into groups of 5 guys of the same enemy types and pressing the single attack button to hurt them. There are also some very poorly designed checkpoints that force you through multiple annoying parts again. Also, healing in combat is stupid. They give you healing objects but you have to stand next to them and interact and it takes 3 seconds of uninterrupted standing to get health, making them useless when you actually need them, in combat, as someone will attack you. Very dumb design decision. There are secrets to find but they are also poorly done. Markers show you where to go which is nice and sometimes you have to follow footsteps which I enjoyed, but there is no actual maps and sometimes you can miss secrets because you see the direction of where it is but can't find how to get there and there isn't a map to check. Also, some secrets unlock new costumes and different looking weapons (without stat changes), but this is poorly done also. They are broken up into parts of course scattered across levels. Which means in order to get a new sword you need to find 3-4 boxes in different levels, meaning you need to get every secret or get lucky that the ones you find are them or you've just wasted time. That means you could have done the hard work to find 3 boxes of the costume but since you missed that one box in a certain corner of the level you now don't get it........very stupid. The game is very long and the story is actually interesting. Graphics are also fine, although voice acting is terrible as well as face animation/movements and body movements. During conversation faces dont move and people make stupid gestures with their bodies. 5/10.

The First Templar

Rather surprising amount of depth in this game. While I probably wouldn't buy this at full price, getting it on sale or in a bundle is a sure thing.

The graphics are pleasant - not perfect but for the most part I was happy looking around at what the game had to offer. It played a lot like a non-complex Witcher (2). Gameplay was responsive with button combos to swing your sword this way or that or kick or whatever, and there are RPG elements to unlock more combos/abilities/perks. Honestly I was expecting poor gameplay and that was a surprise for me.

The story is better than many of the reviews are stating, but it's not told in a very effective way. Cheesy lines delivered by soft-spoken NPCs in which you see little. But it's there. It's not Shakespeare in that it's easy to miss if your ears aren't open, but it's a bit harder to pick up is all.

Regardless, story is not needed. It's meant to be played not read or watched (in that if it were a movie or a novel it would suck).

The individual cells or environments are unique enough and I rather enjoyed snapping between two characters or having the option to play co-op (not that I have any friends). Many people say there are too many co-op games, but I feel a lot of games just ignore co-op even if it would fit perfectly. At least give those of us who like co-op the option, and those who don't like it lose nothing in the process.

All in all a good experience. A poor man's Witcher 2.

Surprisingly addicting game. Too bad it's overlooked.

The graphics are dated, really dated, and you can tell that right away. But somehow, the game itself does not appear to be ugly - the game doesn't try to be anything else but a good and easy linear adventure. But in general, the graphics are STATIC. As in, there's no wind, trees are frozen in time and space, no physics, no discernible effects on the environment by your actions.

The story is extremely easy to follow though. No need to memorize names, locations and tons of redundant quests. And there's an abundant amount of history to enjoy. I'm not sure how much of it is concrete though.

There is a certain degree of suspense in some levels and sequences and there is the ability to do some stealth killing.

You can play as one of the two Templar brothers, and you can switch in between the two any time you want, eventually, another character joins in.
You can also gain experience and exchange it for some combo moves, more health, etc.
You also get to collect some items that enable you to get one or another armor and weaponry.

Let's not forget about the co-op though. The bad thing is that I'm not sure how much re-playability this game has. So I would rather see this game as a lone experience and have other games that scream co-op to have co-op (Jericho for instance). Your AI co-op partner is okaish for the most part, and your stealth moves are apt to copying your moves, but sometimes your partner with end up on the ground which is when you have to revive him or her.

Also, it's rare in games when the two protagonists tend to agree with each other most if not all the time. The two characters you play as agree with each other constantly, unlike in Bulletstorm, Enslaved, etc. So even though there's enough scripted dialogue between the two characters, I would probably enjoy to listen to some arguments about the inquisition, the church, the main quest and what not.

The game is also easy, really easy, but eventually, it does require you to pull off some combos and some well-times blocks and counter-attacks to advance further.

The voice acting is pretty poor though.

The game is pretty long. There are puzzles to solve and dungeons to crawl through. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way.

The co-op is outstanding. My best friend and I spent 3 days playing the game. A few months later, we started playing the game from scratch.

When we first tried running co-op we had difficulty seeing each other, so I e-mailed the dev at the end of 2012 to figure out what's up. They e-mailed back a few days later saying that they were out of the office because of X-mas (they also wished me happy X-Mas), and then asked that we stay put for a couple of days so that they could e-mail us back the activation e-mail (which you unfortunately need to play online), so they did so a few days later.

In any case, I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to relax, who likes the hack'n'slash with tactical approach and anyone who wants enjoy a nice story.

Plus, you get to support a small company that made the game in the first place.
