Charles Cecil gave the George Lucas treatment to one of the best adventure games ever on the PC, by releasing a special edition of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars. Unfortunately, this Director's Cut adds (and removes) a host of things that has spoilt the original classic game, and (just like Lucas) unnecessarily meddles with what was already a near perfect product, turning it into an inferior one. Several sections have been added involving Nico as a playable character - these are both boring and pointless. The first one begins right at the start of the game, so George Stobbart, the main character is now introduced AFTER this - how confusing. The whole beauty of the original story is that the player was suddenly thrown into the life of George, witnessing a crime take place before his eyes, and then embarking on a exciting journey to uncover a great mystery.
There are also painfully obvious differences in the graphics quality when switching from the original game and the new sections, which have a noticably different style compared to the original's 1996 bitmap based graphics. Some cutscenes have been removed, and the addition of the portraits when a character is speaking is strange - for instance, they replace the telephone call cutscenes - why? Items that you need to interact with stand out too jarringly. Several animations are botched or have been mysteriously removed, scenes now end abruptly without the characters animating or the screen fading out like in the original. Blood has been removed. Several pieces of dialog have been cut and it also suffers from noticable drops in quality when reverting from the newly recorded sections - a product of a bungled remaster. The Director's Cut is now very much an 'easy mode'. It is now impossible to die - in the original you could make a wrong move and you'd be soon watching a pretty brutal death FMV. Now the game instructs you to the right area, and even has in-game hints - where's the challenge in that?
Overall, a huge let-down. Not surprisingly, I suggest buying the original version of the game if you can.
