What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Dropzone has been in development for two years and in closed-beta for the past 6 months. We see our launch on Steam Early Access as simply the next stage in the game’s development, widening the number of players (and increasing the number of games to play!) who will be able to play and suggest improvements/additions to the game to make Dropzone the game you’d like to play. In the past 6 months we’ve honed and polished the core gameplay, and established a close relationship with our existing beta players. We look forward to continued iteration while building more ties across the spectrum of our community.

Early Access is the perfect option for us at this point. Our production team loves to iterate, in fact our whole development process is designed for it; for example, we patched every week during CBT, which equated to roughly 25 patches in total. Early Access will be the best way for us to learn how to further improve our game and address the needs and desires of a larger community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate that we will be in Early Access for several months as we add and adjust features based on feedback from the community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Aside from additional content (pilots, gear, maps, and so forth), much of our focus in Early Access will be spent building out additional PvE and competitive play elements of the game based on player feedback at all skill levels (casual, amateur and pro gamers). Ranked Play will be an early addition. While the heart of Dropzone is a competitive 1v1 game, we all want to be able to play with our friends and to explore modes of play that go beyond purely 1v1 competitive play (some of which you will see in the upcoming release). As we learn what players most like, we intend to double down on those areas.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We spent a good amount of time in Closed Beta making sure we could start with a polished core experience. We built a custom engine for Dropzone , the Sparkle Engine (the 3rd game engine this team has built over the years), and we believe the “feel” of the game is excellent. Performance is generally good when settings are adjusted properly for older computers but we need to do a better and more intuitive job of adjusting those settings, including dynamically. There are some areas, such as Crafting and Daily Tournaments, which are functional, but haven’t received what we would consider a final polish pass. We currently have 4 of the 5 planned Classes available with 3 Pilots each, 2 1v1 maps, 1 2v2 map, and 120 types of Gear representing the abilities players can configure. During Early Access, a 5th class will be added to the game, along with more pilots, more gear, Ranked Play, pilot skins and other vanity items that will allow you to customize the look of your game. You can also expect to see features and items suggested by you, our community.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Dropzone was Build to be a Free to Play game and as such we plan to keep it Free to Play beyond Early Access.
We might explore the option of offering specific bundles or additional content via DLCs in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“At Sparkypants, we have a special way of developing a game with Dropzone’s scope. When we started development on the game, we had a prototype running within a few weeks. The entire studio would play the game together each morning, a process we creatively call the “Daily Game.” From that play session, we would make a list of things to add, change, remove, and we’d try to get as many of them done for the next day’s Daily Game. This process drove development, kept us seeing the game as players rather than only as developers and encouraged us to create a new “release” every day.

Fast forward to today and we still do a Daily Game and, during Closed Beta, we typically have a new significant release every week. Our existing Closed Beta community has been invaluable in providing feedback and helping us focus development and balance the game. And now it’s time to extend this idea to a larger community of players. We have a saying at Sparky, “It doesn’t mean **** unless it’s in the Daily Game.” Once we’re in Early Access that will be, “It doesn’t mean **** until it’s in the hands of the community.” To make that happen, we may start with occasionally live-streaming the Daily Games (DGs) of select features, pilots, maps, or whatever when they are close to completion, and then build from there.”

Coming Soon to Dropzone!

Greetings Commanders!

Apologies for the lack of an update this week. Time flies when you're having fun, or at least working hard to include some big changes for the next release! Same thing, right?

As usual, we will provide all the details in our Patch Notes next week, but for now here is a small list of what you can expect:

  • Parties will be able to match with non-partied players for 3v3 Ranked
  • Left-clicking friendly and non-friendly units will open up an "Inspection Window" providing robust details about that unit
  • A large overhaul of our leveling up system to bridge the gap between 1v1 and 3v3 play styles
We have also been working on and balancing Sniper 2 and 3, as well as making changes to the Builder, Draft, and in-game HUD, but these changes will come at a later date, so stay tuned!

Thanks so much for your patience. We're looking forward to getting these changes to you as soon as possible. Expect a lot more to come! See you on Europa!

Patch Notes Early Access v2267

Commanders, this week's patch will deploy on Wednesday, June 14.

Gameplay Notes
  • Queue Penalty Improvements
    • Abandon and Surrender options have been added to the in-game options menu
    • Getting kicked from a game due to AFK detection, disconnecting from a game, and choosing the abandon option in a match with 2+ human players is considered toxic behavior and will be subject to a queue penalty
    • Gracefully resigning, Team Surrender, and choosing to resign in matches with one remaining human player on the team is considered acceptable behavior and will not be met with a penalty
  • Surrendering
    • Surrender voting replaces Resign in matches with more than one human player on the same team. If a vote passes, all players on that team concede the match and the match ends. The player who calls the vote is automatically voted 'for' surrender. Players who call a vote cannot call another vote for 5 minutes
    • After Minute Y (5+ min), a team can vote to surrender, both in ranked and unranked. Voting is counted among all connected humans players on the team, abstaining from the vote counts as 'don't surrender'. The vote must be unanimous to pass
    • After Minute Z (10+ min) a surrender vote can be passed with a majority vote, instead of a unanimous vote
    • Gracefully resigning treats AI teammates as a non-vote
  • Achievements
    • To address the recent change where Achievements can no longer be earned in Custom Lobby or Challenge matches, the 2v2 specific achievements have been changed
    • Double Humiliation
      • This achievement is now called Humiliation
      • The new achievement objective is to team Wipe the entire team in a 1v1 match
    • Easy Pickings
      • The new achievement objective is to destroy each Hive on the map at least once in a 3VAI or 3V3 Match
  • Daily Bounties
    • Any Daily Bounties that have a requirement of completing matches are not rewarded or counted towards in the following scenarios
      • Dropping or resigning from the match before it was completed
      • Being kicked from a match due to AFK detection
    • However, if a match ends due to the opponent player/team resigning before the match ends, those matches are counted as complete matches
  • Objectives
    • Alpha Strike is now an objective on the Styx Map
    • Changes have been made to ensure players will not receive Eradicate and Max Eradicate objectives in the same match
Miscellaneous Notes
  • Top Right UI Improvements
    • Upcoming rewards are now displayed when hovering over the Player XP and Level
    • The progress bar has been updated to be more noticeable / less subtle
    • The Blueprints button has been removed – a Crafting button is now located in the Builder under the gear/software selection list
    • Hovering over the Player Portrait now produces a quick navigation menu with all the menus located in the Player Profile (Change Portrait, Overview, Rewards Timeline, Masteries, Collections, Match History, and Account Settings)
  • Masteries Polish
    • A Masteries option has been added to the Main Menu for easier navigation
    • Crate Graphics within the Masteries Page have been improved
    • Background art has been added for each Mastery
    • Font sizes have been changed to improve readability – other improvements have been made to make completed masteries more noticeable
    • Mousing over stars will now show rewards, similar to how mousing over crates shows rewards
  • Rewards Sequence Polish
    • Specific gear is now shown rather than a generic crates screen
    • Now that the rewards are automatically surfaced, crate rewards will be placed in the Collections menu rather than the Crates menu
    • Improved the timing and responsiveness of rewards screens (you can now click anywhere to advance animations faster)
    • Improvements have been made to distinguish between blueprints and crates and gear
    • The XP amounts are now shown with a bar in all of the UI
  • Shop Improvements
    • The improved Crate Shop that was previously only accessed through the Builder and Crate Opening screens is now available in the Shop
    • Pilot Details are now listed in the Shop
  • Minimap icons display option has been changed to display Pilot Portraits by default. This setting can be changed back to numbers in the Interface tab of the options menu
  • Various improvements have been made to AI players – they now use additional abilities such as Twinned Coils, Flamethrowers Atomic Welder, Plasma Rifle, Assault Plasma etc.
  • A medium difficulty all-Summoners team has been added to the AI team rotation
  • The Resume button is now located under the Play button
  • A “Masteries” button has been added to the Main Menu
  • The match results screen now supports showing rewards that are immediately delivered and not opened via Crates. These rewards will animate up to the Collections panel
  • The Rewards page now shows the amount of XP earned in addition to the XP radials – this number will count up as the radial is animating
  • The XP bar and the experience that display in the player profile are now hidden when the user goes to a panel with sub-tabs, like the ranked panel or the masteries panel
  • Added pagination mousewheel scrolling to the Rewards Timeline and the Match History page of the player profile
  • Blueprint rewards will now animate to the profile gear collections panel
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where connecting Knockout’s Haymaker special to a flying Sniper over a chasm would teleport the Sniper to the center of the uplink cause a loss of control
  • Fixed an issue where selecting an already selected unit wouldn't re-center the camera or enable the chase camera
  • Fixed an issue where scrolling through a Pilot’s information in the store and then changing the page to a new pilot results in the scroll position resetting
  • Fixed an issue with the top-right reward notifications so the ping animation will play every time a notification is added instead of just the first time
  • Fixed an issue where Summoned Units’ HP bars would disappear if they only had a small amount of HP left
  • Fixed an issue where clicking on the "continue" button of an individual reward element while it was fading out would not cause the fly-away animation to finish immediately
  • Fixed an issue where Snipers could become stuck trying to find a pathable area if issued an attack move order that resulted with them stopping on top of a chasm
  • Fixed an issue where returning to the match rewards page from another page would restart all progression animation
  • Fixed an issue where Kavash spawned by hives could aggro over small gaps on the Styx map
  • Fixed an issue where the “revealed” red-eye icon would not show for either player when Thermal Imaging revealed enemies
  • Fixed an issue where clicking on the Player Name did not navigate to the Player Profile if attempted while in the Shop
  • Fixed an issue where Mastery Reward icons were appearing in a low resolution on Rewards Screen pop ups
  • Fixed an issue where Jovians awarded for Pilot Contract missions were not counted towards the Kingpin achievement
  • Fixed an issue where the Player XP bar could extend outside of the Quickmatch Menu after max profile XP had been reached
  • Fixed an issue where the title length of the Mastery Quest “The More the Merrier” caused the UI to be out of alignment
  • Fixed an issue where shared dunks in a 3v3 Match did not result in the entire team earning the “All Cores Belong to Us” achievement
  • Fixed an issue where scrolling through the gear list in the Crafting Menu could result in a blank space being shown where the next gear card should have appeared
  • Fixed an issue where clicking and holding a blueprint in the crafting menu resulted in a horizontal scroll bar being shown under the blueprint list
  • Fixed an issue where the hover UI in the match results screen did not have consistent detection boxes
  • Fixed an issue where the rewards screen was listing quest rewards as bounty rewards
  • Fixed an issue where entering and exiting the shop resulted in rigs on the dropship reloading in place – Rigs will now only reload when a purchase has been made
  • Minor localization fixes
Known Issues
  • AVG antivirus software may incorrectly flag the Dropzone client as malicious. We have reached out to them to whitelist the client. In the meantime, you should be able to manually allow your antivirus software to allow the Dropzone client to run
  • There are known issues with words bleeding outside of their bounding boxes for every language other than English. Fixes are on the way
  • Locking Observer slots in Custom Matches only works when both slots are empty
  • The Private Match setting only works when the game is already created, so someone can join in-between
  • Hive Link does not have a cast ring around hives to show where the ability can be cast
  • Global Chat does not reflect your changed name until you have restarted the game
  • Party members that did not initiate a seek will see incorrect checkboxes sometimes (WIP)
