What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Let me tell you a short story...

Once upon a time two drunken apes wanted to make a crappy horror game, abuse Early Access and become famous AF!

Just kidding... (っ◕‿◕)っ ♥

HORROR OF THE DEEP is our first commercial game and was designed as a survival horror game with roguelike elements. We are a two apes developing team and grew up with traditional games. In Early Access we see an interesting new approach, which enables us to learn from your gaming experience for a better future.

We want to make a game where the community shapes the game with us while developing. Of course, this is new Terrain for us but there are always first times. We are sure with you and your sexy awesomeness (and some actual feedback) we are already holding the key for a good Early Access game within our hands.

So let's dive into the unknown deep together, shall we? \(◠ε◠)人(◠з◠)/”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“A very good question my friend! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

Currently, we think it will take a period of 6 months. With every update, we will inform you if and how the plans are changing and what we are working on next (based on your suggestions and wishes. Uh, and we should make little polls too!).”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Now here is the tricky part (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

Many devs make that mistake to promise you explicit things in or after Early Access, that might never come. After all, we want to convince you with progress, not hot air and false promises.

Therefore, our Roadmap is more simple. For sure we will add more Levels, monsters, items, events and want to polish and improve already existing content. Also, we will talk to you which parts of the game we should prioritize and we want to add some sweet content based on the wishes of the community.

Sounds good? Good. (ᵔᴥᵔ)”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“For now, we have developed a base game with the first half of all originally planned Levels and monsters. Also, there are already all basic features. Overall polish and quality can vary.
Also, most levels are not jet optimized well and could cause some frame drops. However overall the game is pretty stable.

And of course, smaller bugs can happen. Since we are just 2 devs that can test the game we cannot find all the bug, we have to make more friends... (◕﹏◕)”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We think a good early access game should start with a very cheap price and should increase properly to the content and quality that will be added to the game.

With every big update, the game's price will be slightly increased, so players who buy the game now get a beneficial exchange (incomplete but cheaper), but it's also fair towards players who will buy the completed game at full price. We want fairness to all people, no matter of development state.

And we don't know yet how big the game will be, so it's unclear how the final price will be. But we will communicate pricing with you in the forums. TRANSPARENCY FOR THE WIN! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*・゚”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Of course, our capacity is not unlimited so we will try to focus the community more on one place, the steam forum of the game, to manage effectively feedback and conversations. So don't be shy, tell us what you like and what not, and we will try our best to talk with you as often as we can. After all, communication is the key to game development. (Uh that wisdom!)

Also, it can't be so hard to manage a steam forum ^^.... (slightly feeling of a big regret)

But of course, if you want to communicate privately, you can talk with us via https://twitter.com/DrunkenApes and email. drunkenapesgames@gmail.com
And don't be thrifty with your words, we will read passionately your entire love- or hate letters.

Oh boy, that was too long but we hope you had fun, Drunken Apes OUT! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞”

Heyho lost survivors,

seems a little bit silent here huh? Well, we have taken advantage of that and have worked quietly on some stuff that most people seem to want desperately! (no .. uh no content uh ... it's steam trading cards ... yeah)
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

So we have made a little Steam stuff update ...

"Just add some Trading Cards, it's not that hard. Just make some pictures and thought it in. And people buy your game more often" they said...
(づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

Turned out to be so much much more (nasty), but hey we did it! But maybe we have overdone that... (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

A whole ton of super shiny cards, glorious badges to prove yourself as a true survivor. Also, beautiful and mysterious backgrounds to make your friends soo envy and super funny emoticons! ( uh yeah that's a "must do" too)

But please don't hate us for the emotions, seems they are not that good, on the other hand, NOBODY told us that you have to do pixel art... and you know that's impossible when you are drunk as fuck ... I mean they sooo tiny!
༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ

... ah, you don't understand that ... uhh ... ah just forget about it... not important. 。◕‿‿◕。

And we made one achievement... yeah don't worry, more will come, we think they should be hard earned in HOTD.

Alsooooo we want to show you some sweet screens on what we are currently working. Uh, should we make a spoiler warning?

While you are waiting for the next content update, we hope you have fun collecting fancy cards and spamming emoticons.

hm ... wait why are these strange symbols on our cards... wtf how happened that? CHANGE IT! WHAT? YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE CARDS ONCE THEY ARE APPROVED?

(╯°□°)╯︵( .o.)

Here we are with a smaller update that focuses on changes to the savepoint system. This was requested a lot and therefore we have prioritized this for a smaller update and we will follow up then with other sweet content.

Also, we have made other little changes, fixes, and some new stuff with the UI.

Here are the notes:

New improvements

  • savepoint selection in start menu
  • savepoint effects and sounds
  • level name introduction
  • reworked quality settings in unity launcher
  • some additional options to enable/disable
  • loading indicator between level changes
  • new sound when collecting keys
  • interaction symbol for interaction objects ... obviously
  • super secret and innovative technique to make motion more fluid and natural!
  • uh ... it's so good (ಥ﹏ಥ)

  • spawning actually in the cage when respawning
  • fixed various sounds that not played correctly
  • fxed cursor, that goes crazy sometimes
  • fixed some floating stuff ... uh
  • deactivated z rotation in camera headbob (reducing sickness)
  • more responsive buttons in menu
  • additional key spawns to make the game a little bit easier ... ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°
  • a little try to make a tutorial ... it's so swift you won't even recognize it ...
  • correctet mure amateurisch spellling error
  • deadlier death screen ... yeah, that's possible (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
  • fixed the partial controller support
  • changed some enemy sounds
  • fixed occlusion bugs
  • increased the FOV a little bit, and don't worry, we will make this as an option next time, maybe :P
  • recreated all fitting tone mapping effects for the different levels, have overwritten all of them in the last patch... because we are too drunk (☞゚∀゚)☞

That's all for now, we will continue working and have an eye on your feedback

We are already working on the VR support for the game, which will come in the next updates. It will feature a seated/ standing experience controlled with xbox/other x input controller or mouse and Keyboard. Supported HMD's will be the HTC VIVE and Oculus Rift. ( ▀ ͜͞ʖ▀)

Because this game is so hard (and not perfectly balanced for now), we have decided to start an event for all players of the game! WOOHOO (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

The first person who reaches the end of the ALPHA 1 Version will be immortalized in a special way into the upcoming update!

Conditions: The player has to make a screenshot of the end text and has to send it per email to drunkenapesgames@gmail.com
Further instructions and the immortalisation will be discussed with the winner.

Have fun
