What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Starting with Infinifactory we have released all of our games as Early Access titles to make it clear that we intend to make improvements and create additional content based on real-time player feedback. Opus Magnum will be our fourth Early Access title.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Not very long. Unlike our previous Early Access titles, Opus Magnum includes a puzzle editor, Steam Workshop integration, and localization into six languages from the first day of Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The “full version” of the game will contain usability and balance improvements based on feedback collected from players. We also plan to curate a large set of player-created puzzles in the Journal of Alchemical Engineering, an in-game “magazine” similar to SpaceChem’s Journal of Reaction Engineering.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“I was actually tempted to skip Early Access for Opus Magnum, as this is by far the most polished game we’ve ever released as an Early Access title. The game features a fully realized story-driven campaign, and includes a puzzle editor, Steam Workshop integration, and localization into six languages from day one of Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We’ll be listening to your feedback via email, on the Steam forums, and on the game’s official Reddit page. We also invite you to create your own puzzles and submit them for inclusion in the Journal of Alchemical Engineering!”

UPDATE: More obscure bug fixes and improvements

Today's update is a grab bag of changes without anything resembling a unifying theme, other than that we're getting close to wrapping up Early Access:
  • Replaced "global records" with "top percentiles", which should have most of the appeal of global records without the problems. For more information about this change, check out the corresponding Reddit thread.
  • Added a new achievement for solving journal puzzles.
  • Fixed a crash in solution reverification caused by OneDrive.
  • Fixed a bug where the animated tip for the glyph of multi-bonding wouldn't play.

About This Game

“It is not an exaggeration to say that without alchemical engineering, civilization would not exist.”

Hailed as the most promising alchemist of his generation, Anataeus Vaya has just accepted a position as Head Alchemist of House Van Tassen, the oldest and richest of the city’s ancient Houses. But dangers lurk behind the family’s opulent facade, and alchemy alone may not solve every problem.

Opus Magnum is the latest open-ended puzzle game from Zachtronics, the creators of SpaceChem, Infinifactory, TIS-100, and SHENZHEN I/O. Master the intricate, physical machinery of the transmutation engine— the alchemical engineer’s most advanced tool— and use it to create vital remedies, precious gemstones, deadly weapons, and more.

Design Machines - Design and build machines that carry out alchemical processes using a variety of components including programmable arms, customizable tracks, and more esoteric devices like Van Berlo’s wheel and the Glyph of Animismus.

Open-Ended Puzzles - Compete against your friends and the world to build the simplest, fastest, and most compact solutions to the game’s challenges. Export animated GIFs of your elegant designs to show them off.

Steam Workshop - Make and share your own puzzles with full Steam Workshop integration and an easy-to-use puzzle editor. Play the top user-submitted puzzles in the prestigious Journal of Alchemical Engineering, curated by Zachtronics!

Rich Story - Intrigues and dark plots swirl around the city’s ancient Houses. Alchemists, who hold the power to create almost anything known to science, are highly sought— and highly dangerous.

Solitaire Minigame - Alchemical engineering takes focus and concentration. Take a break with Sigmar’s Garden, an original alchemy-based solitaire game. Every game is winnable, but not every game will be won…
