What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Beyond Despair is our first large project, and we want to get it right. We’ve planned everything to take advantage of Early Access, and we’re confident that the feedback we get from players at this stage will help make the full release of the game that much better.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to release the full game in the summer of 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“You can find details about our development plans in the game’s description below, where we outline currently present features and those planned for the future.

Our primary focus going forward will be evenly split into several directions to ensure a properly fleshed out game upon full release. We’ll be adding new locations, refining the smaller details that make the game world come to life, developing gameplay mechanics, adding new chapters to the main questline, introducing new types of NPCs (including traders), and localizing the game into multiple languages.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We regularly update the main description for the game on its Steam page with all currently implemented features.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We decreased the price for Early Access and we plan to change it back to original price after full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“It’s simple. We’re making a game for players to enjoy, so there’s no better place to get feedback on whether our game is enjoyable than from those very players. We’ll be actively participating in discussions on Steam, on our forum, and via social media. We also intend to collect structured feedback on several key decisions throughout the development process so that we can make some of the more critical gameplay mechanics in the game truly fun and easy to use for players upon full release. So if you’re willing to brave the light discomforts of early game builds, we’d sincerely appreciate your comments.”

Important Announcement!

Greetings, volunteers. Beyond Despair development team is here, and we have an announcement to make.

Unfortunately, we’re temporarily putting the development of Beyond Despair on hold. One of the main reasons for this is our current financial situation, which was one of the reasons we decided to enter Early Access - which did not pay off as well as we expected. It’s important to note at this point that all owners of Beyond Despair will remain in your Library, which means you can access the game and continue exploring Ansora and its mysteries any time you want.

Right now we’re actively searching for ways to continue development and to keep our team together. We’ve come a long way since we started developing Beyond Despair - and we still have tons of ideas and features yet to be implemented. Leaving all of this work behind would be devastating, and we’re doing our best to prevent that.

A lot of time has passed since we entered Early Access back in January, and community’s attention and support is still one of the main reasons for us to keep going. Of course, we made mistakes with BD - but that’s something that can’t be avoided, especially with our first project. We’d like to once again thank you all for your support and feedback, that you left throughout Beyond Despair’s development cycle.

Despite all that, all of us at Heatherglade and PixelMate strongly believe that you’ll hear from us once more. Our story is just beginning.

Update 0.8.0.0

1. In this patch we introduce new armor and equipment: first one will be a leather jacket. You can make it when you find a blueprint.

2. Version 0.8.0.0 is the base for crafting and loot system remake. There are many changes planned and here is what we have done already.

Cooking:

• We add pot and pan as a requirement to cook most of the food.
• All ingredients have a category now. For example cucumber is in vegetables category.
• Cooked food gives a lot more nutrition.

Crafting items:

• We introduce different tiers of tool sets which you need for crafting most of the items.

Loot:

• There is no trash anymore. All the objects can be used, you decide which one you recycle and which you can use later.
• Peaceful creatures always give meat and leather. You can get leather only hunting animals.
• You can find cloth only on madmen.
• Chance to find food is decreased.

3. Level Design:

• Part of the island received optimization changes.
• Several updates of the southern part of the island.

4. Sound:
• Bugfixes.
• New nature sounds (birds, wind, etc.).
• Improved footstep sounds.
• Updated radio.

5. Creatures:

• Gangs of marauders occupied some of the locations on the island.

Main purpose of these changes is to make crafting more interesting and effective. It provides you with more powerful items then you get from exploring.

Hunting creatures becomes more important too. There is less food and you should hunt animals to solve the lack of food.

Good luck on Ansora, volunteer!

About This Game

Beyond Despair is a multiplayer survival horror game with an emphasis on immersive gameplay and visceral player interaction.

The game is set in a world ravaged by recent catastrophic events, which have morphed it into a place of non-stop aggression, as danger lurks around every corner. In this newly forged “society”, firearms are rare, leading to an abundance of melee combat against both monsters and other survivors. But simply surviving any given encounter isn’t enough. You’ll have to be sharp and make tough decisions to make it in the long term.

Play the role of a volunteer from the New Light Corp., sent on a special investigative mission to Ansora Island, a place filled with threats of every shape and size, from monsters to supernatural anomalies, and even seemingly impossible weather patterns. Though don’t forget about the other players you might encounter, as you’ll quickly learn that they may not be as friendly as you might hope. Human nature is a curious thing.

Upon entering the game, you’ll find yourself upon the southern shore of Ansora, the starting point for your lengthy mission through the present to uncover the past.

Explore a Ravaged World

Ansora is no vacation destination. Within its borders you’ll find terror, death, and suffering, but you’ll also find a story hidden underneath, a story we’ve done our best to tell in an interesting manner through a variety of features.

Unique Locations
  • Abandoned settlements, military installations, factories with questionable intent, top secret facilities, and more. Don’t shy away from these places, for whether you’re driven by the mission laid out for you or just natural curiosity, you’ll find new information everywhere you look.

Craft Weapons & Supplies
  • While you can find useful items to simply pick up and use, you’ll also come across numerous recipes and components, which you can use to craft modified weapons, prepare sustenance, and concoct medical supplies.

Develop Your Character
  • Those who set out to explore Ansora tend to find out a lot about themselves as well. Unlock new abilities and train them to increase your chances of holding your own throughout your journey.

Uncover the Island’s Mysteries
  • While you’ll have plenty of freedom to explore as you please, don’t forget about the primary storyline. Find notes and diaries left over from Ansora’s previous inhabitants, and piece together the island’s dark past.

Hunt & Defend
  • As you search Ansora for information, keep track of the many creatures that inhabit the island, noting for yourself which of them can actually be of use and which are best avoided if it can be helped. In this endeavor too you’ll find useful tips from the island’s previous denizens strewn about as seemingly insignificant notes.

Be Prepared

Ansora and the world as a whole was changed forever after the catastrophe. The island in particular is home to many threats, all of which bring death in their wake.

Anomalies
  • These poorly understood beings are a common sight on the island. Some of them are easy enough to spot at any time of day or night, while others are just barely holding on to the physical plain of existence and thus require a keen ear to identify in time. Use rocks and other miscellaneous items to uncover anomalous zones before entering them.

Monsters, Marauders & Patrollers
  • Trust us when we tell you that you don’t want to encounter a pack of Dorgs while exploring the wilds of Ansora. An unexpected run in with a group of the island’s less mentally stable human inhabitants is also quite likely to produce painful results, so try not to get between the two opposing factions staking claim to the island: the Marauders and the Patrollers.

Just Outright Death
  • Even as you make your escape from a group of rabid enemies, don’t forget that the poor volunteer you’re controlling is only human and thus needs to eat, drink, bind his wounds, cure what ails him, and avoid going insane in the thick of it all. Also keep in mind that weapons lose their durability over time, so keep track of your equipment, lest you find yourself with no means of defense when you need those means the most.

Fight & Survive

Ansora calls to you, volunteer. Will you accept the challenge?

Fight for your life against monsters, other players, supernatural threats, and even nature itself. Unite with others to stand a better chance, or act as a lone wolf to prove your mettle. The choice is yours.

Just be sure to stay focused, and remember the tips laid out above.

Good luck on Ansora!
