What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“To receive and implement player feedback so that IronWolf VR can be both compelling and intuitive. It is important to us that we develop submarine systems and enemies that are complex enough to provide interesting gameplay while being simple to learn.

We have created some missions to demonstrate and test different gameplay elements, with the intention of putting them together in a persistent open world.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect early access to last for around 6 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Throughout early access we will be carefully analysing player feedback which will guide how gameplay systems in IronWolf VR evolve. Our aim is to achieve an intuitive and engaging system for controlling the submarine that takes full advantage of roomscale VR.

Our vision for IronWolf VR is that players will be able to patrol the oceans and be provided with a seamless persistent open world, with interesting and varied gameplay being presenting as they sail the ocean. In this open world players will be able to enlist the help of friends to man their submarine. To achieve this we will be adding:

Gameplay features:

  • Large naval battles
  • Aircraft carriers
  • Battleships
  • Airships
  • Escort mission
  • Blockades
  • Inventory system

Submarine Systems:

  • Damage Control: Players repair their submarine through physically interacting with the submarine.
  • Torpedo room
  • Engine room
  • Additional deck gun

Environment:
  • Strategic sea forts
  • Icebergs
  • Underwater terrain
  • Night missions

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In the initial release of IronWolf VR we have included a set of mission that will enable players to:

  • Sink enemy ships with torpedoes
  • Fight enemy aircraft using the anti-aircraft gun
  • Duels with destroyers that will engage you with depth charges
  • Navigate around anti-submarine mines
  • Experience drowning when the enemy inflicts too much damage on your submarine
  • Medals awarded based on mission performance
  • A variety of difficulty levels

These missions provide a starting point for us to get player feedback before introducing new missions and gameplay mechanics. In the future, these missions will provide the basis of an open world gameplay experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We will announce pricing for the final launch of IronWolf VR later, as we are still reviewing if it will be the same price as Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are excited for the community to start playing IronWolf VR and giving us their feedback. We are looking to release updates on a regular basis and we will be acting on community feedback, both for guiding new features and balancing the game.”

Early Access 1.3.0.0 Major Update - Battleship and more

New Enemy: The Battleship, heavily armed and armoured.

  • Battleship has a long range Hedgehog Mortar that fires between 1500m and 3000m, so get in close.
  • Battleship can fire torpedoes at you from its broadside, dive quickly as torpedos can not track you below periscope depth (~15m).
  • Battleship deck guns do a lot of damage, recommended not to surface.
  • Battleship takes approximately 10 torpedos to kill.
  • Added 2 new missions featuring the Battleship.
  • Extended random missions to occasionally spawn Battleships.

Completely Reworked Enemy Detection Model.

  • Pulsing circles on the map show the area where enemies can detect you.
  • Enemies inside this area will be able to see or hear you and know your location.
  • The area is large when you’re surfaced, larger still if the periscope is fully extended.
  • The following items affect the detection area when submerged: Submarine Speed, Submarine Depth and Periscope height above water
  • Firing a torpedo or the deck gun will spike your detection area for a short period of time.
  • Enemy sonar pulses are now displayed on the map as a translucent blue wave. If you can hear the sonar ping, the enemy has detected you.

Official Oculus support and locomotion option for players without Roomscale

  • We’ve added an unobtrusive locomotion mechanic where you can use the Vive track pad or Oculus Joystick to make small adjustments to your location and orientation inside the submarine. You can turn this on/off from the settings menu.
  • Left control will let you do a small hop, forward, back, left and right.
  • Right control will rotate you 90 degrees.
  • Grip button crouches.

Misc.

  • Improved enemy ships physics simulation.
  • Improved AI steering and engine control.
  • Added settings to the main menu that allow players to change locomotion type.
  • Replaced enemy ship alarm with automatic incoming torpedo alarm.
  • Reduced destroyer deck gun damage.
  • Reduced damage of AA flak gun against enemy ships and forts.
  • Bug fixes.
