About This Content

This legendary battle of World War II took place from October 1941 to April 1942. The Battle of Moscow campaign takes place on a large-scale map (270 km x 290 km) (168 mi. x 180 mi.) with Autumn and Winter seasonal terrain. Battle of Moscow comes with eight legendary aircraft which have been painstakingly recreated for you to enjoy flying.

The airfields and flight strips along with their structures have been placed according to historical documents whenever such data was available. We analyzed air reconnaissance photos and personal photographs of the period to determine the typical airfield layout and their unique designs. As it was back then, there are concrete and unpaved landing strips, many being temporary grass strips with no other visible signs other than a little infrastructure and support personnel.

There are five big towns in the area (in addition to Moscow itself which is visible, but overflights are prohibited by order of Marshall Stalin). Cities such as Vyazma, Rzhev, Kalinin, Klin and Serpukhov are all part of the game space and they were made in great detail thanks to the new mapping technology. The cities and towns were created using WWII aerial imagery, so their layouts are correct for 1941.

  • Eight (8) aircraft recreated from detailed drawings and blueprints: four fighters (I-16 Type 24, Bf-109 E-7, MiG-3 and Bf-109 F-2), two ground attack planes (IL-2 model 1941 and Bf-110 E-2) and two bombers (Pe-2 Series 35 and Ju-88 A-4).
  • A new Campaign consisting of five (5) chapters covering all phases of the Moscow battle.
  • Ten (10) specially designed scenario missions included with an unlimited number of auto-generated sorties available.
  • Fighter Sweep, Ground Attack and Bomber Escort mission types available.
  • Pilot Rank Progression.
  • Special Medals and Awards.

Continuing the theme of IL-2 BoS, BoM is filled with a campaign featuring randomly generated missions on the Moscow map, 8 standard planes, and their various unlocks.

Planes:
Axis:
Bf-109 E-7:
This is the earliest Bf-109 in the series. Compaired to the other Bf-109s, it has a weaker engine, no potential for more powerful armament, and no automatic radiators. This doesn't draw from the plane IMHO. It is a very stable gun platform, suffers less from torque than other members of it's family, and still has a powerful armament by default (x2 20mm cannons, x2 7.92mm MG).
Bf-109 F-2:
The F-2 is a favorite plane of mine. It not only has come o fthe spledid characteristics of the F series, but also seems to be a good balance between the stablity of the E-7, and performance and performance of the F-4. The armament can be seen as a little lacking though, as the plane has a single 15mm cannon, and two 7.92 machine guns by default, but a 20mm cannon to replace the 15mm can be unlocked later.
Bf-110 E-2:
The Bf-110 can be used as a fighter/escort (and can do very well as one), but is mainly used in game as an attacker. It is fast, suprisingly manuverable, has a very good offensive armament, and can carry a heavy bomb load. Although, the plane doesn't have a very good climb rate, and the gunner isn't worth two cents when it comes to defence because of his limited firing cone. I'd say two things that make this plane stand out are it's low landing speed, reflecting that of the Bf-109, and it's reloadable 20mm cannons.
Ju-88 A-4:
Arguably the best medium bomber in the game so far, the Ju-88 is great at everything a bomber should (defence and climb rate excluded.) This plane can go from smaller, to bombloads so big you need to lower the fuel to take off. Dive brakes, it's heavy bomb loads, and cruising speed are what make this plane stand out amond the bombers. Like in the Ju-87, the Ju-88's first flap increment is so effective at generating lift that you'd better be ready to pull up when they are retracted. As stated before though, the defence is not the best, but, like any gunner, will be able to damage/shoot down enemy planes when given the chance.

Allies
I-16 type 24: The I-16, as to be expected, gets out performed by everything in straight lines, and is an ideal dog fighter. Pilot's of this plane have to be careful of AoA during tight turns at low speeds though, as the plane has no leading edge slats.
MiG-3: The MiG-3 is Russia's top performer, having a high top speed, and high service ceiling, but most pilots still perfer other aircraft like the Yak-1 because of it's agility and manuverablity over the MiG. Unlike the other Russian planes though, the MiG features nearly, if not perfect, rearward visiblity, and also has many gun mods. These would incude 2 mods under the cowling (12.7mm MG, 20mm cannon), and BK gun pods.
IL-2 1941:
The 1941 is my perfered IL-2. Though it has less load out capabilies than the 1942 model, it's airframe is of all metal construction, and has an armored glass in the back of the canopy by default. These two reasons, and the fact that I perfer taking only bombs and rockets (instead of 37mm gun pods) make me perfer the 1941 model. (performance, landing speed, stall speed, and such are close if not the same for both models.)
Pe-2 series 35:
Again, I personally perfer this model over the 87. Nothing regarding bomb load are different between models, but the series 87 has better engine, offensive armament, and has a mod to install a blister turret. This plane features no mod of that kind, but I perfer because the turret on the 35 is more aerodynamic, and the glass section on the bottom of the nose is larger allowing for more visiblity.

Buying BoM allows for you to have access to these planes, the Moscow campaign, and Moscow map in QMB. If you don't own this installment, you can play on the Mowscow map online.

Decent DLC overall, added a lot of interesting planes, high altitude interceptor MIG-3, early IL-2 which is in many ways better than 1942 version, nimble I-16, BF-110, JU-88 and early 109s. So pure BOM planes setup is quite interesting. The map looks nice, however you cannot fly over the city itself, only nearby. Minus is still single player campaign, which is mostly very similar missions, no career or anything like that. The only improvement is that now each of the 5 chapters has 1 unique mission that is not auto generated.

Recommend to all IL-2 series fans and virtual pilots looking to try something more realistic than WT simulator battles.
