What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is not quite done.

We need your feedback so we know what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong and we want to work with our community to help make Space Ribbon the best it can be.

We are aiming to have small updates every week such as new cars and bug fixes and major updates every 8 weeks such as extended VR support or online multiplayer.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the game will be in early access for about 6 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more cars more races more modes online multiplayer and full VR support.

One thing we relay want aim for is to have the player draw the track in VR as the other players are racing on it to create a more unique experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version has 4 cars with all their upgrades ready to be unlocked and 4 player split screen.
The game has a few issues but is perfectly playable.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game will be increased when the game is finished.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan on listening to what the community has to say about the game and working very closely with them to find out what they think is annoying and what they think is fun and what they would like to see in the game or changed.”

About This Game

Psychedelic Space Racing

The year is 2132.

In the far reaches of the galaxy, gigantic space creatures have been discovered.

Creatures that vomit solid matter out of their mouths. Solid matter that is the perfect substance to drive beat up cars in a race to enter the creature’s mouth.

We call it the Space Ribbon.

In the fastest growing sport in the galaxy, be the first to chase down a giant space beast as it spews a completely different psychedelic racetrack out of its mouth every time you play.

Modify junked up classic cars and turn them into the fastest in space.

  • Never the same track twice!

  • Intelligent track generation combines procedural AI with great track design

  • Navigate a twisting, turning, unpredictable racetrack as it appears ahead of you.

  • Race your friends with up to 4 Player split-screen.

  • 2 classes of car, with 4 in each class, each with different strengths.

  • Level up your racer to unlock new and harder race modes including cosmic mode

  • Unlock new cars and upgrades to improve engine, grip and slipstreaming

You chase a Space Panda or Tiger on a track it spews out in space using various space cars. It's like a David Bowie fever dream, kinda. It's an experience eitherway. Cars look pretty cool, and go through an evolution of upgrades, and the Space Beasts are both fantastic and a little creepy.

Driving can get kinda clunky though, feels like there's a lot of resistance to turn around and go the other way but, on spinouts it's rather hard to get the car facing the right way. Power-ups would be nice though. Maybe run it through some tests to liven things up, races at the moment just feel a little straightforward, there's little agency other than slipstreaming but nothing to combat when someone gets too far ahead other than they can end the race.

Colour me impressed but don't "panda" to me by adding a Snow Leopard skin for the Tiger, or do, actually I'd really like that. Eitherway the potential for greatness is there, it's just a case of realising it, and I'd suggest things here and there but, I'll keep an eye out for a full release.

Space Ribbon is good fun for short bursts of time.
The visuals and soundtrack are fantastic, while the sound effects aren't so strong.
I love the attention to detail, the cars are especially cool. The graphics remind me Beetle Adventure Racing meets BLUR.

The game plays fairly well, the handling is pretty tight. When I hit the side of the ribbon road, I expected to fall off, Mario Kart style. But it just bounces me back into the linear road.
It would be great if there was some alternate paths to take or some power ups or something in terms of content while actually racing. In my experience of the game, it's pretty easy to win every race. The challenge comes really late into play time.

All that being said, this is absolutely worth the Early Access price tag of £9.99 (£6.59 on sale)
Grab it now, put up with it not being perfect and enjoy the finished game.
