An unbelievable way to enjoy your music. A very fun game in it's own right, however this title combines the twin-stick shooter feel with intense particle effects pulsing to your favorite music - which in essence become the game's levels. I know I'll be playing this game for years to come, enjoying some "Dragula," and other Rock/Metal titles in a whole new light.

A tonne of fun!!

It was really easy learning the controls. It is good for low spec computers or laptops.
I like that you can even put or create your own ship to play with.

Classic arcade Asteroid-type shooter. Nothing special, you've seen it all after an hour or two playing. Gamepad recommended.

If You like something you can play Casually with the option of Challanging, this game is a winner for you.

This game is a Bullet-Hell, plain and simple, but unique in the aspect of Music being the determining factor of how fast your game will go. Mixed with the Seizure-Inducing Visuals (warning btw) that can be boosted all the way to 200%, this game is made to be more for the Rock/Techno fans.

You Control a Ship and play through songs pre-installed in the game's Album. As stated before, the Music is the Determining Factor on how fast the game will go and stop, as the music used will also Determine the Length of the level you need to survive in, if it's the Standard Mode. The Music controls just about everything, including your Ship's Gun Strength and Movement Speed, as well as Bullet Speed. The Faster and more Intense/Loud the Music is, the faster and stronger everything is.

Multiplayer is a Mixed Bag of good and Bad. If for Friends, then Multiplayer can be good. If for the Public Multiplayer, then it's not great. There are barely anybody wishing to play this game Public Multiplayer to begin with due to DLCs making some players better than others, in a bad way, but i'll get to those in the next section. as long as there is an Even Playing-Field for all players, then Multiplayer can be fun. However, that can Rarely happen, resulting in the lack of Public Multiplayer Games atm. This is more of a Singleplayer game to begin with regardless, so don't have Multiplayer be one of those re3asons for getting this game.

Now that the main, Overall General Game is taken care of, ONTO THE DLCS! This Section is PARAMOUNT to how much fun you want in your Beat Hazard Experience, so Read up! The best to least needed DLCs shall be listed in order from top to bottom.

First and Foremost, the $0.99 DLC of the Ability to Put your Songs into your Beat Hazard Game. TL;DR, For Single Player, and with the very low price of $1 to do it make it the most Highly Recommended DLC to get. Even With the Ultra DLC, the game only has 23 Songs, so if you really want to get maximum Enjoyment, The Ability to Stack on Loads and Loads of songs to play on will give Beat Hazard MUCH more Replayability. However, the only way you can play Multiplayer with your songs is if everyone else has A: The Same Song name, and B: The Same Song FILE Type (.mp3, .ogg, .wav, etc.) Unless it's for Friends, Multiplayer utilizing this is highly unlikaly. However, You'll usually want to stick to Friends-Only for Multiplayer, as from what i've experienced in Public Multiplayer, It's not the best.

Secondly, the Ultra DLC. This is the Pack you need if you are looking for all of that Challange you may/may not be yearning for. While it's $4.99, and for a small game like this, the Ultra DLC is quite Game-Changing. This unlocks the Perk System where, if you level up, you can now pick from a variety of Perks to unlock such as ones made to increase Score, obtaining new Weapons such as Micro Missiles and Reflect Shields, and even getting unlockable difficulty levels, which are all VERY useful if you do not plan on getting the Shadow Ops DLC, which will be later. This also gives New Enemies, Including More Bosses, and Boss Rush Mode. While Boss Rush Mode can, sorta, kinda, a LIIIIIITLE bit be abused to level up fast (which I do Not Condone, nor like, the use of doing,) The new Mode can be quite the experience, and can become Hell-on-Earth, or, in this Case, Hell-in-Space, VERY Fast if you cannot keep up, making it a good challange the longer you survive. This also adds in Co-oP, and Head-to-Head, which is Competitive for whoever can get the most points. While this IS second, it is nearly as needed of a DLC as the Custom Track DLC explained first, with the only 2 reasons of that being Price and Player Skill needed for Ultra.

Now comes the worst of them, and this time an Un-needed DLC that I Do Not Recommend if you get Ultra, and that is the Shadow Ops DLC. The Shadow Ops DLC is, in my theory, the main reason Public Multiplayer is Lacking. From what I have seen from Multiplayer, many of the ships are a Much more OP Version of the Standard Version of the Ship, with the downside of a Larger Hitbox the Majority of the time (exception is the Mosquito Ship). While it may give the game a sense of Completion, it gives Unnessessary Ships that would Kill the purpose of the Ultra DLC, and with a $5 Price tag as well, I cannot recommend this DLC over the Ultra DLC, for 2 main reasons; Bad Synergy, and Less Needed out of the 2. The Reason why the Shadow Ops DLC mixes bad w/ Ultra is that the Shadow Ops DLC makes the game more Easy, as it gives better firepower, killing many of the reasons to even GET Ultra in the first place. If you're good enough, you can, Like me, complete Tracks on Suicidal only needing the Standard Ship. Even if it DIDN'T make things easier, it sure as heck not making it harder for you. I've seen games where i see people using a few of the Shadow Ops Ships and other Custom ships from the Steam Workshop, and only Rolls with the Reflect Shield, because their ship is so good they don't even NEED the Micro Missiles or Ultra Beams the Ultra DLC Gives, which are two VERY Useful Weapon Perks. If it makes the game that much easier in the higher difficulties, you shouldn't be playing on the higher difficulties to begin with if you wanted a more Casual Play of Beat Hazard, even IF the missions of obtaining the Ships are very Tough, making this DLC not needed if you already have Ultra, which i Recommend Much Higher than this.

TL;DR: Great Game Casually and Challenging, but not in both worlds for DLC. Immedietly get the Custom Song Track DLC ASAP. Do not get Shadow Ops if you're wanting a more Challanging Feel to the Game.

8.81/10

Just finished a "Survival" mode.

As a healthy 16 year old male, I can assure you that after a game of survival that is 51 minutes long, with loud dubstep and visual intensity at 100%, this game will make you feel like a 55 year old, overweight, brain dead, man with a Zweihander up his ♥♥♥.

Overall it's a really good game, Shadow Ops are highly recommended to keep the game interesting, although it is not necessary as long as you have some good music to listen to.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT PLAY IF YOU CANNOT HANDLE INTENSE FLASHING LIGHTS, YOU WILL BE SICK, AND YOU WILL *NOT* HAVE A GOOD TIME.

This game is one of those hidden indie diamonds in the rough, how so?

the game is overall straightfowards, you have a ship versus a near infinite amount of enemy ships in fast paced laser-gun combat at the beat of whatever background music is playing.

while the above sentence could easily apply on many other twin-stick shooters out there, it stands out on this game in particular due to it's core mechanic:

Gameplay powered by YOUR Music.

there are many twin-stick shooters out there, but all restrict the player on whatever powerups you may pick what levels you play and at most provide you with a few catchy tunes along the way,
this game however manages to go the extra mile and provide support for your music and even better base it's entire core mechanic around it, how so?

the strength, intensity, speed and visuals of nearly all elements on the screen while you play are directly affected by the intensity of your music.
if your music library consists of heavy beats, then the game will crank enemy spawns and spazz-inducing visual effects like there's no tomorrow, the downside to this however is that having a mellow music library does the opposite, reduces enemy spawns, light intensity and overall speed of the game.
(which by itself, isn't so bad if you're looking for a break in the action or cannot handle strobing lights)

The fact that this game uses your very own music library is also it's best point, as if you're one of those guys that cannot help but have more than 20 GB of music stored on their hard drive, then you've basically given yourself hours and hours of free DLC, in the end, it's up to the player to decide how active or dull their experience with this game is.

moving on to the ships,

as of the last update (shadow operations DLC) the player can now change between different ships, now to be honest, this is merely just an extra for those who wish to give the default ship a break, these newer ships provide either greater mobility or firepower and sometimes even auto-fire or auto-pickup for items. all in all the extra ships are made for people who are either having a tough time on the regular game or want a self-imposed challenge by selecting (or creating) a weak. slow. ship. You're not missing out on much should you play with the regular ship.

which brings me to the next point. Ship Crafting.

If you're one of the players who just doesn't want to customize the music, but the ship as well, you now can with the previously mentioned DLC. you are given a set of "points" that you can use to spend on designing your ship.
you can go for heavy and strong or light and nimble. you're pretty much given a good set of options on how to build a ship, the kicker is, PNG support, what makes your ships unique is that you can in a way draw your own ship, customize it, THEN play with it, all in all, a pretty cool feature if you have the patience for it.

FINAL VERDICT: If you're into shoot-em-ups, and love music-based gameplay, this game is for you.

AS A BONUS: This is one of those games that actively benefits from soundtrack bought from other steam games such as TF2 or Half Life. if you by any chance have any game albums downloaded, give them a go with this game you might be surprised how some tracks play out.
