Beat Hazard, A music game with similar gameplay to that of the classic Space Invaders but with a custom soundtrack. That's right you can use your own music in your library to play and it's a whole different experience for each song you have.

- Classic shoot em up powered by your own music
- Excellent replay value in terms of different enemies and bosses in
- Many different ship types introduced in a DLC pack which alter how the game is played
- A number of difficulty levels which determine how many enemies appear
- Diverse gamemodes such as boss rush and survival (can you survive a whole album)

- Many flashing colours in this game so be careful if you're epileptic
- Multiplayer can be empty at times unless you have friends who play this game often

Certainly one of the more fun games I've been able to try out and even though I don't play it as often myself anymore I would totally recommend it to others who love music games.

Really just a nice little casual game where you can easily control the feel and mood of each individual play.

A 2D shoot ’em up game set in space. Choosing different tracks from your mp3 collection, you can decide how long you play, how intense the battle is and what is most important, the track you listen to (sorry for repeating that twice, but it’s kinda awesome). There is also some level-up aspect for this game where you gain ranks for score and upgrades for money. And visuals that can be tweaked from “shiny” to “my eyes are bleeding out!” is also a distinguishing feature.

So if you are looking for a shorter or longer decompressing play, you as well can take “Beat Hazard”.

Beat Hazard (Ultra) is a music-based game that centers around music, primarily your own playlists, often via iTunes or other media libraries. The game itself has you piloting a ship (or one of many with DLC) whose goal is to score as many points as necessary within the length of any given song and to avoid dying. You'll face enemies ranging from stray asteroids and basic enemy ships, to mines and even bosses in the form of large monsters or battleships with a multitude of weapons at their disposal.

The game rewards you for staying alive by supplying you random powerups and score multipliers that dropped from defeated enemies. If you die, which you can by being hit just once, you lose some of your powers and score bonuses. At the end of the song, your score is tallied and as you score more points, your piloting rank will increase. Increasing your rank gives you the option to select bonus perks, weapons or even extra lives based on your play style.

The difficulty can be adjusted based on two parameters: The song you play and the base game's difficulty. Since the game's pace is based on your music's pace, speeding up and slowing down as the music does, creating a different play through for each song. You can also ramp up the challenge by selecting "hardcore", "insane" "and suicidal". I found "hardcore" to be a nice base for causal playing if you're looking for something that won't stress you out. "Insane" is great for a challenge and "Suicidal" is, well, suicidal. If you're looking to test your reflexes, it will show you no mercy.

In my eyes, the visuals are what make this game so enjoyable. Even with roughly 40 hours of game play done at the time of this review, the visuals have yet to bore me. The visuals, much like the pace of the game, will fluctuate between slow and erratic, constantly changing colors. Players can adjust how strong they want the color effects from the ingame menu, helpful for those with sensitivity issues or that have a difficult time determining enemies from balls of light in the background.

While your overall enjoyment and replayability may differ, the game is well polished and provides comfortable atmosphere and challenging game play. I've enjoyed every moment of this game.

  • Music - The game syncs to your media library, offering you as many songs to play against as you have.
  • Track Diversity - The waves of enemies you meet and the pace you meet them changes on each track, keeping you on your toes.
  • Visuals - Colorful, bright (sometimes too bright :P) and, frankly, pretty to watch.
  • Challenge - The game can offer a constant challenge.

  • Without music on your PC, the game would be a shell of its former self. Aside from internet radio and a few built-in tracks, you'll not find much fun after a few play throughs. Having your own music is highly recommended.

Overall, if you're a fan of music-based games, then I'd highly recommend looking into Beat Hazard.

Lasted 20+ minutes while playing some "dirty dubstep" (i.e. hard and fast cacophony of Transformers having sex).
Barely got into 10,000 Days by TOOL (after having played Wings for Marie - Survival).

10/Touché developer.
