Update 266 Live!

5 Ιουνίου 2014

Natural Selection 2 Build 266 is now live on Steam! Today’s release is the culmination of weeks of hard work by the new NS2 CDT – Community Development Team. A patch that has been developed entirely by the NS2 community – we are very proud and humbled to release it to you all. While it might be short in scope and stature, we hope you’ll find that your experience is now a little more refined.

This patch was created by the community, for the community and with Unknown World’s blessing. They have taken a gamble on us, but our shared passion for the Natural Selection franchise is what got us here today. Things like bug fixes and popular features have gone into this patch, but we have many more plans for the future!

You can also join us LIVE on http://twitch.tv/naturalselection2 on Saturday, June 7th at 12PDT, 3EDT or 21CEST for another round of CLOGCAST Q&A. We would love to hear what you think of 266 and will also talk about potential things to come in 267.

Kodiak Update Released!

1 Μαΐου 2014

Today, a new map: Kodiak, created by community mapper and modder Loki, was released officially as part of Natural Selection 2! This day is the culmination of months of hard work by Loki to create a map that stands proudly alongside the previous eight official maps.

<iframe width="600" height="338" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/SbmH7mThwCU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Kodiak is now available for everyone to play, and will automatically download from Steam when you next update Natural Selection 2 via the Steam client. All official servers will be running Kodiak only for the next few days.

Lush vegetation, free flowing rivers, and vistas of an asteroid field characterise Kodiak. Three enormous Biospheres run down the centre, forming the path for a river and dense vegetation. These areas create gameplay the likes of which Natural Selection 2 has never seen, with aliens and marines alike playing hide and seek among the foliage.

There is much more to this story than just a new map. Today, the Kodiak Pack was released on Steam! The Kodiak Pack includes new camouflage armour for Frontiersmen, Exosuits, and Skulks, and a new Kodiak Shoulder Pad. Naturally, when fighting in the forest, you will want to blend in, and you can also wear these new armours on any map!

<iframe src="http://store.steampowered.com/widget/296360/42746/" frameborder="0" width="600" height="190"></iframe>

Kodiak was created by a community mapper: Loki, and for every copy of the Kodiak Pack sold on Steam, Loki will get 50% of the earnings. This means that every time someone buys the Kodiak Pack, they are not just getting sweet new NS2 gear and supporting Unknown Worlds, they are also directly supporting the Natural Selection 2 modding community.

All of the toys included in the Kodiak Pack can be accessed via a new in-game customisation system, accessed through the main menu while in a server. Special Edition, Deluxe Edition, Reinforcement Program, World Championship, and of course Kodiak armour, lifeforms, and badges may be accessed in this menu, and previewed live.

This new customisation system is a hint at what is going on under the hood in the Kodiak Update: Lots. Loki was not the only community member to work on this update, countless others have been working directly on Kodiak to take it beyond the map, and into the core game.

Rantology took charge of the art direction of Kodiak, designing and creating the new items available in the Kodiak Pack, the customisation sytem, and other elements of the update.

SamusDroid was the technical leader of the project, coding in all the new features and fixes. SamusDroid has spent untold hours on engineering the Kodiak Update, and the care and attention he has shown towards Natural Selection 2 and the needs of its players is truly wonderful.

The Unknown Worlds playtest group, now number over sixty dedicated individuals, pulled out all the stops to test, test, test and test the Kodiak Update for hours on end. They also served as Academy Award winning actors in the Kodiak Trailer!

This is a very exciting Natural Selection 2 update. This game is now over one and a half years old on Steam, and by any reasonable standard, that is a long time to go while still receiving active development attention. The Kodiak Update is not just fun, it is also a test: Could this new development method, combining the talents of Unknown Worlds and devoted Natural Selection 2 players, yield even more updates in future? Natural Selection 2 is an immersive, multiplayer shooter that pits aliens against humans in a strategic and action-packed struggle for survival. It seamlessly combines shooter and RTS/strategy gameplay.

Key Features:

  • Two Unique Sides:

Whether you play as one of the elite marine Frontiersmen or the vicious alien Kharaa, you must use unique strategies and your abilities to win. Marines form persistent squads to find and destroy alien hives. Aliens can choose a wall-running Skulk, pudgy Gorge, flying Lerk, murderous Fade or gigantic Onos that can smash through doors.
  • Real-time Strategy:

Commanders play from overhead to lead their team to victory. Build structures anywhere, collect resources and research upgrades. Marines buy weapons at an Armory or build sentry turrets and siege cannons to assault the enemy. Aliens build upgrade chambers, evolve special abilities and plant traps.
  • Dynamic Environments:

Use a flamethrower to clear the spreading alien infestation. Aliens destroy power nodes knock out the lights and power down marine structures. Random start locations mean you must scout your enemy and before committing to a build. Every game is different.
  • Unlimited Variations:

WYSIWYG graphical tools and powerful scripting allow you to create new weapons, scenarios or entirely new games. You’ll get all our tools (level editor, cinematic tool and more) as well as the full Lua source code to Natural Selection 2. Natural Selection 2 is a very interessting game, that represents a good blend of FPS and RTS game play.. On top of that, the community is accepting of new players and offers a friendly hand to educate those who are new.(voicechat-tipps etc)

Due to the fact that Natural Selection 2 is a hybrid of FPS and RTS game play, it allows for very competitive play in that the deciding factor of victory and defeat involves the long term decisions of a commander and/or the quick reactions and overall skill of the individual combatants (whether shooting aliens, or stalking marines). Due to this style of game play, games can very well last over an hour and yet feel very "tight" throughout the entire match.

However, as of now, there is a lack of a ranked match system. The fact that the average game easily lasts over 20 minutes, and longer games tend to last for at least an hour, a very serious deciding factor of the winner is simply how many players leave and join the game. I understand that this is not really a game breaking problem, however due to the fact that players do not have much "loyalty" to their respective team, and the fact that the average match is rather lengthy, if a number of "pro" players join or leave the match during the middle of the game, it could drastically change the fate of the match instantly. I believe that having a sort of ranked match system, like that in Counter Strike: Global Offensive, will serve a very competitive game like Natural Selection 2 justice. Having ranked matches will also remove the occasional "newb stomping" matches, where there is a skill-based team stack.

The game features asymmetrical teams with very different game play styles. This provides for a different style of FPS game play, and not the traditional shooter vs shooter like in most FPS games. I believe that because of this asymmetry, it expands the average gamer's experiences about FPS games in general. However, in Natural Selection 2, because it is also an RTS hybrid, a player could choose from essentially four game play experiences within one match alone which highly increases the game's overall learning curve. These four game play "roles" are: Marine commander, Marine player, Alien commander, and Alien player. Each type of "role" presents new strategies and information upon which the player has to know, and ultimately, having a sense of all the 4 roles is the minimum requirement for being "decent" in the game. Overall, having asymmetrical teams can interest those who are tired of the same-old shooter vs shooter, and because Natural Selection 2 is an asymmetrical FPS/RTS hybrid, such game play increases the overall learning curve to become fully understanding of every aspect, tactics and counter-tactics within the game.

Do not let the lack of a ranked match system and rather difficult learning curve stop you from playing this game however. The lack of a ranked match system simply means that Natural Selection 2 is always going to be played on a "casual" game play setting, which many FPS games have. The difficult learning curve is also easily passed if one simply spends about a good 2 hours playing in a sandbox training server by themselves, learning all of the abilities, techniques, tech-trees, map-knowledge, weapons, and life forms to get that "full" understanding of the 4 game play "roles" I mentioned earlier. Furthermore, if you still need further clarification and help, the overall community in Natural Selection 2 servers are kind, vocal, and willing to help those who ask.

Soloplayers: 60-70% fun ( or less, if you play against a pro team)
With Clan/team: 70- 85% fun

Great game.
Awesome looks. Smooth and intuitive controls. 2 ways to play, 2 asymetrical sides and different roles within each side make the gameplay really diverse. Free content updates and constant improvement. Also modable.
Might take some patience though due to simetimes really rough pub matches. But what multiplayer game is not guilty of that?
Great game!

This game is a combination of amazing and terrible.
Reasons why it's great:
- Outstanding graphical output, the game is put together in a quality fassion making it difficult to not find visually stunning.
Even on a low setting, the game is breath taking.
- Play quality is amazing. Two equally matched teams can fight for hours, or seconds, depending on the turn of the match.
The game is very much about tactics and isn't for 'twitch' gamers.
- Team work. This one thing makes this game almost standalone in the way it is to be played. Without your teammates, you'll most likely die.
- RTS mode is easily grasped after a few games, and is entirely the most interesting aspect of the game. It is also the hardest and most demanding, as everyone depends on the Commander to drop the buildings and upgrades to keep up the fight.
- This is the way any AVP game SHOULD have been made, and anyone intending on making a game similar had better take notes.
Negatives:
- The learning curve is steep, and I mean steep. People who play this game first off have to learn the basics on everything, from basic alien movement, to combat as a marine. It isn't an easy game.
- If you aren't running a stellar set up, you will get bogged down. The servers are listed by not only ping, but also your performance on them.
- However, this next one is the worst part of this game: A-hole players. This game is fantastically set up, with an ability to be a great game, but the higher end players who do nothing but play this game make it terrible. I've played this game far too much as is, and am no where near as good as some of the lower end players. A single high end player will tip the balance of the teams so dramatically, that the game is better forfeit. But not only are these players good, they are not new player friendly. If you thought the actual difficulty of the game and it's elements were hard to learn, try listening to three guys on your team do nothing but complain as you stumble your way along trying to do your best. There is no trick in betting a better player, there is no handicap for new players, there is just death. Lots of death and harrasment. I can't personally recommend this game entirely based off of the terrible player pool, though every fiber in my being wants to.
