Update 297: Shadow Fade Released!

The Shadow Fade is now available in the NS2 Item Store!

The room was eerily silent, even the normal white noise of the industrial facility seemed to vanish. I proceeded forward as ordered but something felt uneasy and I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck begin to stand up. I continue to tell myself that I am a trained soldier and that I’ve encountered enough alien scum that nothing should surprise me, but still the unease raced across my body and the fear set in even more than before.

Suddenly I hear an all too familiar sound, one that can only be described as vacuumous vortex that death so quickly follows. I stand at the ready, shotgun in hand as I prepare for the Fade that I know is quickly approaching. The sweat rolls over my brow and begins to drip over my eye… I blink and in that instant I feel the presence of the beast in front of me. As my eyes open what stands before me is the creature I know but something is different, this fade evolved, more sinister and more deadly. He quickly swipes at my head and sway to the left to avoid his bony blade like arms. I swing my shotgun back around and fire, but I seem to miss as the fade quickly moves and disappears into the shadows of the room.

I begin to trace the room looking for the beast and fire I hope will be the fatal blow. I approach the darkness slowly in anticipation of an attack and in the black I can just make out the two blood thirsty eyes of the fade. I fire my shotgun and the blood from the beast paints the floor below me, but then it lunges forward both weapon-like arms at the ready to stab me, I try to fire again but feel the bone rip through the skin on my shoulder. My body falls to floor like a rock as the blood flows from my wound like a creek after the storm. As my vision begins to blur and I can feel the life leaving my body, I hear the fade chuckle and watch it drift back into the shadows…

Update 297 is packed full of exciting new changes to existing weapons. We have been looking and talking about ways to shake things up, and our first thoughts were adjust the items that aren’t that fun or aren’t used that much now. There is obviously more than what you see below, but with our weekly release window we can only test so much at a time. If you hadn’t got the hint from above the Shadow Fade is now available in game. If you purchased the Shadow Tier as part of the Reinforced program you will get the fade free of charge when you launch the game. For those of you that didn’t, you can purchase it in the Item Store. If the fade is successful we will quickly be working to introduce the final member of the shadow lifeforms, the Onos. Expect more changes and exciting new thoughts and ideas over the coming weeks and spread the word to your friends that now is the best time to be playing NS2 and it’s only going to get better!

  • The FBX workflow now allows for bones to be declared as attach_points in the model_compile file

Users can now use the "bone_order_override" directive to specify the sorting order of bones to match up to an existing model. Note: It safety checks the indices given -- they cannot contain duplicates, they must be sequential, they must start at zero and count up, and they cannot arrange the bones such that any parent has a higher index than the children

About This Game

Natural Selection 2 pits alien against human in an action-packed struggle for survival. Wield devastating weaponry as a Frontiesman marine, or become the xenomorph as a deadly. Kharaa life-form.

Strategy Meets Shooter

Natural Selection 2 is a First Person Shooter and Real Time Stategy game rolled into one! Each team, alien and human, has a Commander. The Commander looks down on the battlefield and issues orders, places structures, collects resources, researches technology, and deploys abilities.

Here are some gameplay examples: A human Commander could drop health packs and ammunition to a trapped marine squad, and deploy sentry guns to help them defend their position. Or an alien Commander could grow a new Hive to spread infestation throughout newly captured territory, allowing more alien eggs to spawn...

Two Unique Sides

Aliens players choose to evolve into one of five lifeforms: The fast, fearsome Skulk can run on walls and deliver massive damage with is jaws. Lerks fly and deploy gasses to support their teammates in battle. Gorges heal other lifeforms and build tunnels, hydra turrets, walls, and other tactical structures. Fades blink in and out of battle, picking off marines with giant scythes. Finally, the giant Onos is so massive and so tough, that even entire marine squads can't take it down.

Marines wield rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, pistols, and other weapons. Cluster grenades can clear ventilation shafts of sneaky Skulks, flamethrowers make short work of alien structures and infestation, and boosts dropped by the Commander increase combat effectiveness.

When attacking on foot doesn't cut it, marines can construct hulking Exosuits wielding miniguns and railguns, and equip jetpacks for high speed assaults on alien Hives.

Long Term Development

Natural Selection 2 receives constant updates. This year, 2016, Unknown Worlds continues to develop new features, content, and improvements.

Mod Tools Come Standard

Natural Selection 2 comes with all the tools we used to make the game. All game code is open source. That means you can create, and play, an endless variety of mods. Publish, share, and download mods from the Steam Workshop, and automatically download mods when you join modded games.

Is the best game you'll ever find in the store. Teamplay, player skill, communication, organization, cempetitive... You can play as commander making the game an rts with the rest of the players playing as an fps. Communication and strategy will give you victory. With they own graphics engine makes this game a gem. Developers are gods for me. The mod community is really active and there are a lot of servers with different kind of game mods. I really recomend this game.

natural slection 2 is an amazing . you do need to use team work ( something that dosn't really exist outside of a few games*looks at typical cod players *) there is not a whole lot of story or lore behind it but its ment to be a multiplayer game , not a lore driven game. you might want to get a mic before you buy the game as team work is essental and team work with jsut a keyboard is difficult. if you prefer rts like starcraft over shooters then you can also join in on the fun by being the commander as well. it is worth the money that is put in to the game and i would eagerly suggest it to my friends.

This game is easy to hate, and a little harder to love. It's the least balanced multiplayer game I've ever played, but the only one with an interesting and fun RTS on top of an FPS. It has amazing sound design and visuals, and fun classes. It's really hard to learn, and many gameplay nuances aren't clear to new players (for instance, the metagame of combat is precisely jumping and moving to avoid nearby enemies).

I'd easily recommend this game as long as you don't mind losing, and are dedicated to putting in time to learn. Once you've got down the basics, it's pretty rewarding and challenging. The marine team is great to keep your shooter and vertical aiming skills sharp, and aliens are great to practice twitch reflexes and teamplay.

Here's some hot gameplay tips:

:__Marines__:
-Team up with at least one other marine and stay 10-20 feet away from each other. If you don't have a friend to play with, find a player who is better than you and follow them (20 feet behind), and when aliens attack him, shoot them.
-Don't back up; either strafe or turn to run, then jump and turn back towards the enemy.
-Marine play is about placement, so make sure you are always in an open position, and covering other players' positions.
-This pistol is a finishing weapon, and does much more damages to enemies who have have no armor (have significant damage)
-Don't fire your whole magazine at once, break it up or only shoot when you think you will actually hit something.
-Hold control to move completely silent.

:__Aliens__:
-If you are a skulk and near another player who is attacking, help them attack always.
-Fighting marines is about distraction, so either distract or take advantage of a teammate who has taken the enemies' attention away from your position.
-Draw out fire from marines and attack when they are low on ammo or reloading.
-The skulk should jump off walls or the ground about 3 times a second while moving around the map (jumping off walls achieves a mostly horizontal movement to maximize speed)
-Higher lifeforms should retreat when they lose armor, or are down to 100 hp.
-Hold shift to move completely silent.

Seeing you can get this game extremely cheap nowadays, it's most likely better than many other FPS games out there, but it lacks in playerbase. With such limited player amount, your choices are to wait in queue or play on servers located on other continents. In either case, be prepared to commit quite hefty amount of patience to actually join a server to have "worthy games" on, or to wait until one gets filled up. As it stands, it's a huge waste of time to play the game in a smaller than 6v6 due to the game mechanics in play.

ps. writing this only because of steam badge :>

Im pretty sad to see this game in the shape that its in currently. I pre-ordered ns2 before it came out and have played atleast 2000+ hours on ns1. I played probably 2 hours and then quit, completely dishearted at the lack of community and servers. I mostly played co maps, but did play ns maps about a quarter of the time.

I cant help but say play natural selection 1 as a half-life mod and if you like that, buy this but dont expect to be playing with anybody else unless you have a buddy that buys it as well.

I just cannot put in words the dissapointment that is ns2, how long we all were waiting for this game to come out and the results we got. Im going to continue playing ns1 because it has a couple more servers and players than ns2.

I play NS2 only on public servers, competitive game experiance might be different.

pros:
-Uniqe Hybrid FPS RTS game. You can command or play on the field.
-Aliens and marines are so different yet balanced.
-Exciting combat, adrenaline rush while playing.
-Very active developers, regular free updates, new maps, bugfix.
-Addictive

cons:
-Need an expensive computer (2000 dollar) to play well. (Intel CPU and NVidia high end GPU. SSD harddrive. 64 bit OS)
-Expensive internet connection, no other family member allowed to use the internet while playing ns2.
-High lerning curve, you have to spend 50-100 hours to learn the basics of the game.
-You have to tolerate losing all the time while learning the game.
-Small player base. Empty or full servers. High ping if the server is far from you.
-Bad balance system. Boring/annoying 2-10 min games most of the time
-NS2 community: Noobs, stackers, teamswitchers, hackers, trolls, public stomper pro players, smurf accounts.
-Players become angry quite often and become hostile to other players because can't handle losing.

Please hide hivestat from players. Let open high pop public servers where player can play for fun.

This is my favorite game of all time. The game is awesome.
But why the bad review? Because of the devs!
They decide to hide large servers. There is a hidden option that you can enable to see them, but if you restart the game it resets and you have to enable it again. This is a big deal because I've spent 99% of my time on large servers with 24+ players and you can't find them in the serverbrowser anymore. It took me several days before I were able to find my way back.

Devs stated that they made this change because "the game isn't meant to be played that way"

25% of the entire Natural Selection 2 community disagrees, but I guess we don't matter to the devs....

Please don't support this kind of dev behavior. DON'T BUY THIS GAME!

I have to explain why i dont recommend this game even when this is my favourite game ever. And this is because a important part of the community including the developers and the creators of the game. They are acting against the large servers where im playing with my friends. They recommend to play in small servers but me and many people on this game like playing on big servers with more people, more action and more fun, at least for us. Our community is growing slowly but constantly and the question is this is not happening in small servers, wich are getting less people everyday. So their solution is trying to hide these large servers where i play so new people wont find them like the others small servers and we wont have new players to keep the servers alive... Instead of giving support to us they are trying to make us disappear because they think the small servers will get more people... I dont think it will work and i will explain why.
I started playing with 4 friends and after one month only me was still playing it... At the beginning we started playing on rokie servers but after sometime when we changed to the normal servers my friends got bored and frustrated playing the game. They couldnt do anything because they got killed everytime when tried something. We saw many times how one good marine with a shotgun could kill 4 or 5 players of our team with only one charger... On this game the skill is very important and you need to practise a lot and to spend a lot of time to get better so finally they were leaving it... I have to say, this game was my first shooter game and i tried to learn and get more skill playing the combat mod but even after spending long time playing it, i got frustrated many times playing in normal servers... But everything changed when i found a 42 players server!! I was so excited because i love the game and i didnt want to stop playing it. On this server the ability is not so important, and i said "not so important" because it is, as in any shooter game, but playing here the tactis, the commander´s ability to coordinate the people and the team work is even more important than that. That is amazing!!! Because you dont need to have the better players (with the best aim) on your team to win a game, or at least to have the chance to win.
That is my experience with the game and i think that is the reason because people dont keep playing this game even when they think this is a awesome game.
In my opinion they are doing wrong only trying to fill small servers because people dont have so much time to practise and get better skill, they just want to play the time that they can and have fun while they are playing, not frustration... If the developers and creators werent so stubborn with this idea and they tried to help big servers too, they will be able to get more players for the game but i dont think that will happen. Sadly they are killing the game. So i cant recommend it :(

Find the sum up way below!
====================

The game itself is great but it got boring over time UNTIL i found one of the rare ns2 large servers WHICH ARE MOST OF THE TIME FULLY POPULATED! Now im very disappointed because the developers of the game brought out an update to hide those servers by default...
I as a veteran didnt know how to find the server because of the layout in the server browser which is so unremarkable and bad designed... i wasnt the only one friends told me the same and OBVIOUSLY anyone new to the game will not care to look for modded servers

i cant recommend this game until the developers stop acting against its LITTLE community!!!

As a matter of fact the largest and most populated server wasnt very populated at times where it should be!

By the way i found the server by joining a friend via steam... otherwise i wouldnt have known how to join since the thought about clicking an unremarkble little button called "All" didnt come up

Now i know about it... but rookies/new players werent to be found as before and as some point not at all unlike before the update...

I feel like i cant stop typing more but im very disappointed after spending so much time (almost 3000hrs) i didnt find ns2 got any boring on the large server

For anyone new they might love the game like i did for a while until they get bored somehow AND MIGHT get curious after several hundreds of hours to find a different kind of server with a different dynamic and strategies which arent very common on small servers...

But until then the large server will suffer on lower player counts since the standart gamer filters empty servers!

To sum up
-developers updating an unseemingly little change
-the change has a major negative impact for the most popular large servers
-developers show obvious intention of getting rid of the large servers to fill their beloved vanilla small count servers instead of supporting the community that has supported the developers for a f***ing long time!!!
-im part of the community and ive gifted ns2 to someone else and atleast persuaded 4 to buy it which i wont do anymore until they change it as it was for the past years!!!

I like the game a lot, but it seems like game developers dont like big servers Woozas, which is the servers I currently enjoy the most to play on. They have made the servers harder to find which makes it impossible for new players to find it, and there for no new players to Woozas.

Latest changes to how server list handles bigger servers make no sense. Server list by default filters out servers with bigger player slot amounts and that makes these servers lose their players for no real reason.

On 12/04/2016 UWE decided to kill off a good chunk of it's ns2 community by hiding away ns2large servers, these servers were home to a lot of players, and they constituted for a large chunk of their userbase. Servers like wooza's who are ranked number 1 on gametracker have now closed their doors because these servers are now hidden away from the public.

UWE says this is because they do not want rookies to be playing on these servers so they wouldn't get a warped image of what the game should be. I however read that as them trying to take away the right for people to decide where to play.

NS2large servers are some of the friendliest communities i've seen in this game when it comes towards new players, people are always willing to explain base mechanics and help eachother out.

Thank you UWE, for catering towards a small minority of vocal people that have issues with large servers being part of this game (for whatever reason).

Unless this is reverted back, ns2 will lose a big chunk of it's players, and with a average playercount of about 400, losing several ns2large servers that were constantly capped at 46/46 and 36/36 all day round that to me sounds like a lot of players they'll be losing.

Game devs does not like large servers, no matter how many regulars it has. They abondoned the game, then decided to let "fans" patch the game. Then they started to "dev" the game again, hope arised that they actually finish the DX11 mode or ancient bugs like "Black Screen"....
nope, but hey we have CS:GO cancer now in NS2, thx!

Game dev shut down the largest, sprawling community out of jealousy. That was where I enjoyed playing.

I've played this game probably for more than 5 thousand hours on several accounts mainly on a server (wooza).
without wooza I probably stopped long ago.
NS2 is fun but on smaller server there is always balancing issues. A very skilled player can tilt the gameplay eventhough there is a balancing system, very skilled players can just join anytime and stomping the whole other team.

The good thing about wooza, games are rarely unbalanced. Those who thinks that the server is more unbalanced than others didnt play more than 1000 hours on the server. This server cares more on teamwork than individual skills.

However, althought maybe unintended, I feel that the developers is trying to kill woozas community. And now wooza is offline, i will play other games instead.

UWE does everything possible to ♥♥♥♥ the community off. They have for years ♥♥♥♥ed with Wooza's server because they hate high pop servers, which in my opinion is some of the best fun.

UWE also has ♥♥♥♥ed with siege a lot becuase they didn't like that mod...it was the best thing NS2 had uncle Kyle the dev for siege went full derp so siege is now trash but that is a side issue.

UWE breaks every single mod on every single update because they can't code worth ♥♥♥♥.

UWE released a new patch that nerfed meds so they are now total trash...they weren't even that good to begin with.

UWE never actually fixes any glitches. Wooza and ATF and reported several serious stability issues with the game but they never fix them.

UWE releases these stupid ♥♥♥ item crap and now i get these endless notification of these stupid iteam i don't want and its annoying.

The community over sucks but there are a few decent people in the game. Trolls and ego maniacs are rampant and admin abuse is ridiculous.

UWE also ruined combat mod....♥♥♥♥ers

UWE......you get the point. Don't waste your time on a dying game unless Zycar brings siege back or UWE stops ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the game.

This game shows that people can work together in a game, instead of saying things like f***. It's still hilarious when people rage.

Fast-paced, competitive, unique gameplay and style, and a great game for team-based players. Playerbase is not too big, but big enough to easily get into a game

Aliens vs. Marines competetive game. big * for the idea. If you have a good commander the game will be fun, but if you get a tard your team won't be regular and can't even claim a tactical point.

Amazing fast paced FPS game, Amazing community, And overall they all taking serious in a ranked match and also it has a ranked system. they maded rookie servers for people who are new in the game. If you searching a good game with RTS and FPS remixed together this might be for you, Cause it has No Micro. (♥♥♥♥ing i hate microtransactions) So that means your lucky! you can use your mic to plan a attack any many more trust me im a League of Legends gamer and i played NS2 more than that, the overall experiance of the game is amazing i mean it has a good graphics for it, you can also buy some skins in Market for you Marine or Alien and it has a nice price point for everybody, i mean decent price point for skins and game itshelf, So as i said Fast Paced, FPS & RTS remixed together, And also it has a great community to help you out. what could you ask more? go get the game you gonna love it.

BUT...

It has also its negative sides..

-There are more Rookie servers than Normal Ranked servers so sometimes its hard to find a empty place for yourshelf.
-Somtimes if you play a ranked match and if your in a good team the other side (Alien Side) some players will leave cause of a bad commander (CC) and there will be bots in the place of a Player and they will hit you really really good i mean the bots are a bit OP..
-The servers has sometimes a overload (Highly Ping) so it lags like hell and its nearly IMP to play your match..

But overall i recommend to everybody, I mean give it a try its worth it.
8/10

One of the best multipalyer game of all time, tactical and skill based at the same time. From the first opus back in CS days, I can't tell how much fun I had playing it.
