Breaking News: Anno 2070 Trading Cards discovered in time capsule from the future!

S.A.A.T. scientists have been left scratching their heads after the unearthing of a mysterious object at a Global Trust mining site near Jorgensen Plateau.

The discovered metal capsule is emblazoned with an image of the Moon and the number “2205” - prompting speculation about its origin “from the future”, to quote Dr. Wallace Breen, administrator of the operation. Inside, a set of impressive paintings was found, depicting everyday life scenes and vehicles of the year 2070.

Message and purpose of this baffling find remain a mystery so far. We contacted S.A.A.T. director Dr. Salman Devi for comment and invite our readers to enjoy reproductions of these mysterious pictures we have prepared as Anno 2070 Trading Cards.

the game was OK, I feel like it gets overly complicated the bigger you get, like I lose steam the further I delve into the campaigns sometimes when you're busy micromanaging colonies you already setup that you've already moved past. that being said, it was well thought-out with resources and trying to find resources needed on other islands etc is a supply chain puzzle that's fun to solve. looking forward to the new space one, but only when it goes on sale.

I purchased this game in 2011. I have never been able to launch it (I can get into the main menu). I have tried numerous times in five years. Ubisoft DRM stops me everytime. You can see I have 3.5 hours of time in-game. That's time spent attempting to connect to Ubisoft's servers, and also time the game (at the main menu) has been minimized while I've been troubleshooting. Nothing. Numerous support tickets over the years have not even yielded a single response. I have one open now that's been unanswered for a few hours shy of a week. Worse, I am not an exception to these issues. 62% of ~7000 reviews are positive, and quickly scanning the negative reviews shows that a large number of paying customers share this problem. That's at least 2500 customers that Ubisoft has basically written off over the years, and it doesn't even include the customers who don't own the game on Steam or haven't given it a thumbs up/thumbs down. That's bad. I wouldn't chance this if I were you.

Anno needs to be a Sandbox, Skirmish/Endless Games/Custom mode is essential, nobody wants to play Anno if it is just a campaign or a silly multiplayer. Anno needs to be complex and difficult. Anno needs to have high replay value. Without these things, nobody wants or likes Anno.

Also, it is highly important that Anno games at least be in the modern time era or in the future. Anno games simulated in the past are really boring and not very exciting or enticing at all.

It's not SimCity: RTS. Combat is really slow, if you ever get to it. It's all about making and managing massive supply chains for your whiny sims. There is a campaign to introduce the concepts and factions. It might be more for online rankings as there is a significant player profile section and online interaction.

Pretty clear the Ubisoft no longer supports the game as I have gotten no help in solving my activation key issue. Uplay and the Game ask for the Key twice, when entering it again, it says it's invalid. I am not able to play the game at all.

When I COULD play the game, I had a lot of fun and would have given it an easy recommendation. At this point, I would turn most people away simply because the maker is Ubisoft.

I don't usually like to write reviews. When I write them, its hard to put my thoughts into words because my understanding of a game is almost always different than another person's understanding. Nonetheless, I need to write a review for Anno 2070 because i've spent enough time with this game to put my thoughts into words. TL;DR is at the bottom if you want it.

I'll start with what most people consider the deal-breaker with Anno 2070, which is Ubisoft and their toadies Blue Byte and Related Design. Ubisoft, in their *infinite* knowledge, decided to shoehorn in their UPlay DRM for what seems to be no reason. In fact, all it does is break the game for some and make another hoop to jump through for others. Either way, its annoying. But reviews on Steam aren't gonna stop them, so I won't drag on about them.

But I will drag on about Blue Byte and Related Design. If these guys weren't owned by Ubisoft, I can make a safe bet that if these guys were runned by a more consumer-friendly company, than we wouldn't see issues like losing integral parts of the game overtime or having to jump through hoops to get the game running. But the problem is that these developers are too afraid of telling Ubisoft to shove-it, so we end up with all these issues in their games. I know that both of these developers can produce very amazing games, but because they can't be self aware we end up with carcasses of games overtime.

Enough about the people, let's get to the game. It is basically the mammoth of the Anno 2070 franchise. More factions, more AI competitors, more goods, more everything! This was my first Anno game, and although it was a little overwhelming at first, I got the hang of it after a while. This game is luckily very well polished, and has been updated overtime to make a better experience. The soundtrack, graphics, and mechanics are all top notch. I couldn't have asked for anything more. I'm not gonna get into the gameplay, but once you look on YouTube or you play the campaign it'll become easy to get the hang of. I do want to warn you though that certain features are just plain different from when the older videos were made or when the campaign was made. As of writing this review for the game I am in the works of creating an updated tutorial/let's play for anyone who wants to get into this game now. That may be available at some point.

Let's just address some new things before I end this review. The DLC is certainly worth it, and expands the game so much you can't resist. It will make your life easier. However, the only DLC you may want is the Deep Ocean expansion. The rest is just little cosmetics or things that will be a minor benefactor in the end. As for the current state of the game, they removed the 'World Events' system, which is a little bit of a pain, but you'll probably still be okay. The best part of Anno 2070, in my opinion, is the experience building and nuturing a whole civilization. That won't ever be going away, so if you wish to share that experience, then this game is certainly for you.

TL;DR: Although Ubisoft and their Toadies are a pain, the actual game is a breath-taking experience that will be a staple of the city builder for a long time.

Installed the game on a computer 3 years ago. Now it has to play through my Uplay account but it won't let me use the game code so now I own a game I can't play.

Honestly the biggest joke. I avoided UPlay games for their annoyance, now they just destroyed an entire game I have payed for.

This is my first review, after five steam purchases over the last two years. My experience with getting games on steam to "Start" hasn't been great. But, I have found a workaround each time. So, naturally, I was concerned after reading reviews that this game has trouble starting due to the use of Uplay. I am not doubting those who have had trouble with this game starting. Mine does take a bit to 'load up', even though it's the only game installed, and I run an i7 processor and a geoforce graphics card. I did, first, download Uplay and sign up BEFORE I purchased the game. That way, I took time to write down my log-in information. Since then, I have used auto log-in. I have had NO problems with this game loading up, less the time it takes to start. That could just be that it has to run through two platforms (Steam and Uplay) before it boots up.

Okay, so now to the game. DAMN, this game is fun. Take the micromanagement of civilizations, the city building of any city simulators, and add in some Ubisoft touches, and BLAM you have a wonderful, intricit game. It doesn't hold your hand, and it took me almost two hours of gameplay, and a restart of my first mission to really get a grasp of what to do. I would suggest when you first start playing, to jump right into a mission and just go. Yes, you might fail, but you learn a lot that way. And, so once you restart the map, or start a new mission, you can read throught the Logs that Eve provides you. I found that quite helpful.

The game doesn't get framey, like Civilizations does. I am running a laptop, so Civ 5 is definitely a bit too detailed for long playing sessions. But, I played this game for four hours last night, and the performance never dropped.

I would recommend this game. Purchase the whole thing for $40, just make sure you download Uplay first, and WRITE DOWN YOUR CD KEYS. It does ask for them three times at the initial install, so I found it easier to have it right in front me. Enjoy!

I'm not sure what all the complaints for U-Play are about, but I have had no trouble with the game. Detailed trade system and industry chains, lots of micro-management opportunities. Sort of like multi-island Tropico in the future. If you enjoy that style game you'll like this one.

This game is a generation old by now, but yet fantastic! If city building without too much min maxing is enjoyable to you, this is definately a must in your collection. I only regret not going Anno earlier in my gaming career.

From what I wager, the positive reviews are focusing on the game itself - and the negative reviews are focusing on the uPlay stuff (which, at the time of writing, presented no problems whatsoever to me). I feel the "mixed" review is not at all representative for the excellent game that is Anno 2070.

Yes, this game looks like it was some kind of testing ground for Ubisoft on the whole UPlay/social network/gimme your money for nothing.
But...
The game itself is really, really good. Its a solid economy strategy game, with a very satisfactory level of difficulty and a good climate (disaster control, AI gone mad, finding hidden treasure underwater...).
UPlay and funky DRM are obviously and annoyance, but I didnt find them gamebreaking at all. If you are like me, and dont care for the whole reward sharing, social interaction blah blah, once you get to the mission screen you will find a tremendously done gameplay.

Works like a charm!

People, who commonly dislike game are Ubisoft's haters or they just don't know, how to launch game. (Of course we're not talking about people like: Game is too complicated - NOT RECOMMENDED).

So how do you launch the game?

1. Make sure Uplay is already installed on your system
2. Launch game and follow additional instructions

omfgh, steam shows that I don't own any DLC

1. Check '' ADDITIONAL CONTENT '' tab in game. It's same issue for me! It doesn't show, that I own anything, but everything is already in game. On first launch, if you bought all DLC, it should download or ask to download automatically all DLC through updater.

Took a leap of faith with this one. Never played any of the other Anno games but was intrigued by the concept. Lucky I did. The gameplay was fantastic, graphics were beautiful. The story was short but good. One thing I really love about the game is the replay value. Trying to get your culture to the pinnacle of society and combining the other factions to help was awesome. The game can be lengthy which in my opinion is great. The combat could have been done slightly better. Not a fan of requiring the Tech's airplanes to finish off islands or waiting for your boats to starve them out by taking out the ports. Overall a very great game

Avoid this game.

It requires Uplay credentials to play.

Uplay is... Its just ♥♥♥♥.

It takes forever to load in, is annoying convoluted and frequently crashes. It is a platform designed in hell for the express purpose of crushing your gamer soul.

By the time the actual game loads you'll want to to play something a little more violent.

I truly love this game. I put numerous hours into it and only stopped because I had to stop, Uplay tightened its grip on this so much you can't even play it any more. I miss this game and wish I could play it again.

The game is glorious. Uplay is parasitic unnecessary garbage.

Don't buy this on Steam. Just don't. Buy it elsewhere, because it's usable there. Anno 2070 is essentially the block before Simcity 2014, by a different AAA publisher. Always online DRM, launching through Uplay, and really-sketchy Steam integration makes this game impossible to recommend for the majority of audiences that want to play it for the first time.

A few notes before the game critique:
  • You can still resolve issues with Uplay by installing Uplay before downloading and activating this game through Steam. There's some manual patching you need to do, but that does put off a large portion of the audience. Pick it up if you're willing to put in the effort to get it working; as of late 2015, Ubisoft hasn't addressed any of the fundamental problems with getting it running
  • Make sure you have a machine you'll play through the entire game with, because this Steam version acts as one copy. I can't play this copy anymore because I upgraded to Windows 10; and thus my previous machine (which I can't go back to) has this copy on it. Make sure you've got it on a medium that Ubisoft trusts you to have it with, be it on Uplay originally or a physical copy.
  • This is not the game for you if you don't have great internet. If you lose access to Uplay servers, you could forfeit your current work even on the single-player campaign.

The Pros
Anno 2070 is a gorgeous addition to the series that adds a lot of addicting features. Citizen management, faction alliances and tech research all feel much more interwoven than in previous titles, and given the futuristic asthetic, it seems pretty coherent.

Though I don't think it was executed as well as it could have been, the story mode was very immersive and I found the real-world themes of industry vs environmentalism to be very engaging. There's different styles you can set things up to appeal to the masses and obviously multitudes of methods to accomplish those means, which I found very encouraging for me to find my own solutions to problems I had (usually) brought upon myself.

The Cons
As a first time player, this was really, really hard for me to get into. I actually went back and played Anno 1503 to sort of understand what the game was asking for and to acquire a general feel for how it's played. Thereafter, though I like the very high-tech and modern feel of the game, I don't think the intro or tutorial to the game were well done at all. Having gone through it's predacessors, I struggled re-learning the specifics of new units and buildings, as well as having the map awareness or sense of scale to do quests at apropriate times. It's a very challenging game, and it mostly leaves itself for the player to figure out.

My Verdict
Anno 2070 is a game you likely won't play, and will regret not doing so. Though it's built on the previous titles quite a bit, I don't think it inhibited my progress at any point and kept me coming back for more. I ended up "sinking" many more hours in this installment than I did in 1503, and hope to play 2205 soon.

8.25/10

However in the current setup on Steam/Uplay, I do not recommend purchasing this game for the sake of your future playing it. Anno isn't a game to be played for 5-10 hours and then put down - heavens no. This is something that I find rivals Age of Empires, and you might end up sinking well over a hundred hours into it. If you lose your copy (like I did) you would have been better off buying it somewhere else.

This is the best game in the anno series. They made much improvement in the gameplay mechanics plus they also managed to break free from the reneissance setting that earlier annos exploited to death.

11/10.

Really enjoyed the game. Best played with other people as well. Played many hours with others in the muti-player modes
