Ubisoft is downright criminal, this Uplay thing is highway robbery

I tried everything to connect and be ABLE to play MY OWN game, went to their forum, fiddled with my system32 folder, flushed my DNS and yet, I wasn't able to connect to this godawful brainhared DRM escheme.

I assume this game would be enjoyable if not for the DRM-infested turd fest that Ubisoft forced on us. I just bought the complete editon because of a Steam sale. I read that it required 3rd party DRM but I assumed (incorrectly) that it would actually... work. Ubisoft requires the user to install Uplay which, to my chagrin, crashes every time I log in to play the game. This is completely and totally unacceptable for a game released this long ago to crash every time because of some ridiculous DRM. Go ahead Ubisoft, show more contempt for PC players who actually pay to play this steaming pile of garbage.

I cant get on the game, every forum i visit is filled with advise like "Uninstal it and reinstall it" I have done this like 4 times and it still says it isnt responding on the log in screen, when i first got this a few years back it was one of the best games out there and now UPLAY has infected it like a virus and makes it unplayable on my computer and they wont even fix it

Note to self
Do never ever buy a game from Ubisoft again! The game was a major disappointment, and launching it took forever because it had to be updated about half a dozen times - after the installation via Steam. The compulsory use of Uplay was nothing but one big source of frustration.

The game itself is amazing and one of the best city-builders I have ever seen or played. Though I am writing a negative review that is very similar to other negative reviews. I hate freaking uplay it is awful and I think ubisoft made uplay to be a scam. I spent $30 on this game and I can't even play it because of uplay. If you can find out a way to play the game without uplay do it that way. just to save yourself money and frustration DO NOT buy any game that needs uplay.

Unfortunatly this review will not describe the pros and cons about the game Anno 2070, since it's DRM called "uPlay" by the worst gaming company in the world (even worse than EA) "Ubisoft", keeps crashing every time I try to launch the game.

Even though we keep telling companies like Ubisoft to skip their own platforms and DRM stuff on Steam games, they keep doing it. Uplay do have something called "Auto login" which allows the player to start the game from the Steam library without touching filthy Uplay, I would definatly accept this step, but the problam still remains, Uplay game launcher KEEPS CRASHING AND WONT LET ME PLAY THE ♥♥♥♥ING GAME.

This negative, non-recommending review is not to blame the developers but Ubisoft and only Ubisoft.

DON'T BUY

Ubisoft's Uplay copyright protection program crashes whenever you try to play the game.

Game won't start.

A shame because the game is ruined by the company's idiotic paranoia of Piracy.

I have this game. I LOVE this game.

However, I cannot rate this positive at all.

UPlay may be a joke, but it is a sufferable joke. The real problem is much scarier than that.

----------
SolidShield.
----------

What is SolidShield?

SolidShield is a software DRM engine that was built for corporate applications, NOT computer games. In the business world, people only upgrade computers once every few years. By the time they upgrade a couple of times, the software is obsolete and has been superseded by a later version.

Many gamers are completely different. A lot of us format our machines at least once a year, sometimes more often than that. A lot of us change our hardware semi-regularly as well, particularly video cards, hard disk drives and memory.

This is a huge problem, you see, because all of these changes change the hardware fingerprint that SolidShield uses to 'protect' its software payload. It's akin to the Windows activation system with the very major difference that it it is extremely hyperactive, and very intrusive.

According to Ubisoft, who has said in the past that the PC gaming market is terrible, we are never allowed to change our hardware configurations. If we do, we are obligated to buy a new copy.

Ubisoft says piracy has caused them to require this ridiculous DRM system, which isn't suitable for games at all.

I counter that the existence of SolidShield in this product is causing people to prefer pirating this game to buying it. After all, if you pirate it, you'll actually be able to install it when you feel like playing it in two years' time.

I've never before seen a company that shows such a disdain for its customers. If it were up to me, I'd remove ALL DRM from Anno 2070, and give it away for free (or a lot less than its $60 price tag) as an apology to all of us for having to put up with this travesty.

Until TAGES SolidShield is COMPLETELY REMOVED from this product, I cannot see how anyone could possibly rate it positively.

This is just a great game!
It's city builder/management game and your role is to build the city and provide all goods which your people will need. All in future setting where you may choose 3 ways of developement for your city. You may focus on one of them or mix them in any way. All depends on you.
Is that good game? To be honest I can't find bad things here, everything is so polished, so perfect, that I just can't point any cons.
Oh yeah, the 3 times installation policy. This one sucks as hell - you can install this game only 3 times, this is absolutely robbery. Many people complain also on Uplay, but it works perfect for me. And those are all cons. No cons in a game. No at all!
So what is good here? Everything! Balance, graphics, interface, tutorial.
Game is quite complicated, you will learn it for many hours, but don't be afraid of that. This game has best tutorial, I've ever seen. The main campaign is just one huge tutorial. Every mission is more complicated than previous one and teaches you how to use more and more complicated tools.
And belive me, there is nothing more sattisfying than build your own excellent functioning city. Maybe only to build next one, better than previous one :)

VERDICT:
If you're a fan of city builders and strategy games, this is absolute must have for you!
If you're a fan of RPG, this game is for city builders what Skyrim is for RPGs. So you should try it anyway.
But if you're a casual gamer, better stay with Solitaire.

If you like city building games you will love this. Complex, deep, everything you want.

It looks great too, the animations for all the buildings are done really well and you can just sit looking at your creation for hours with a smile on your face.

People who whine about UPlay are flat out incompetent. I've bought broken games before, this is far from broken. UPlay is not good, at all, but it's not even close to as described in these reviews. Don't let that scare you away from the game if you are interested.

Regarding the crashing issue. I just followed the steps outlined by 704BOSS in the review section and had no issue launching. I've copied his comments again.

Review by 704BOSS :
'THE GAME WORKS. Stop with the negative reviews because you don't like the installation method. It says on the game page that you will have to access it through third party software. If you don't want to don't buy it and move on.

Just want to say the game works fine for me and it is a steal for the price. This installation does require patience as you essentially do have to install up to four multiple items. I already had UPLAY which I have never had issues with so that is the first step. Install UPLAY. Second step you have to install the game to your steam library. Copy the activation code. I already had UPLAY open and the game showed right up. Now it gets crazy. Select "play" in UPLAY. Another steam activation box will pop up and you will think "I just did this!". Do it again. This shockingly opens the game in UPLAY & Steam in unison. The little Steam box will be in the lower right corner. Now guess what? Enter the activation code. You can't past it so you will have to retype it accurately. We are halfway there! The game will now download something I think it called an "adapter". It looks like the game is installing again. Whatever it is it takes 2 or 3 minutes as opposed to the original install which took 30 minutes for me. Is it malware? I don't think so as I run scans for malware daily and have had UPLAY forever and none has shown up nor am I having performance issues. After the adapter is done installing you will think the game is going to start. It isn't if you got the complete edition. You now have to install the addons which are the DLCs. It takes about 10 minutes. Relax, breathe and follow instructions. It is a hassle but the game is definitely playable. Now do I have any idea how to play it? Not at all, but it looks really cool and I'm sure I'll have fun figuring it out as I love Civilization and this looks like a futuristic version of it. Time to read the manual!'

Now, before I begin, I want to say that I applaud the studio who wrote this, this is one of the best games I've ever played. HOWEVER, I will never buy another game using Uplay. After playing this game for about a year I finally bought the expansion I was so excited about. Well, that was the biggest mistake I've ever made. Deep Ocean introduces an autopatcher proxy bug which I cannot fix without going out to some sketchy link on MediaFire to get a FUNCTIONAL autopatcher. That is, unless I go in and download the game through Uplay. Without the patch the game is registered as "Game modification detected" and has no connection to my login and there is no text on any of the menus, unplayable. Supposedly there has been a fix out there for Uplay-only users but I don't have the time or bandwidth to redownload the entire game. I just want to play the freaking thing.

Please go back to fingering your butt Ubisoft, it's all you ever do.

Installed it once, really liked it! I've had to do a few refreshes since I first played it, but now Uplay won't let me play. Uplay says I have the game but when I put the same key in the activation screen, it says it's used by someone else. So no more Anno for me it looks like :( GG!

> Downloaded game on Steam
> Open game, makes me activate it with Game Key
> Opens UPlay, loads game, makes me input Game Key
> Opens game, create account
> Game makes me activate it with Game Key, then it closes itself and starts downloading more of the game

Half an hour and still not near playing it.

Seriously Uplay.

Uplay can be a hassle, but once the game starts its a dream. It works based on the system implemented in the previous game Dawn of Discovery, but an environemntal mechanic and tons of multiplayer content make it deeper and definantly place it a cut above Dawn of discovery. I recommend that any fans of Dawn of discovery give this game a try. I plays like a dream.
