This is a good game. Personaly I really like the design of the character and enviorments. Some of the puzzels were kind of hard but I can't take points away for that because it probably is just me being stupid and it is always good to have a challenge in games. One thing people tend to not like about this game is the lack of story and explination for what is happening but I personaly like it it allows the player to infer about why the character is in this world,or what is he trying to do and why is his sister there with him.

The game is simple and quite good.
The atmosphere is raw with many dark elements.

The bad side is that a casual gamer will finish the game in about 3-5 hours.
So the price of 10€ doesn't add to the short game.
I will recommend it for the maximum price of 4€

It's a nice, mysterious game. You're dropped in the game without knowing what you're suppose to do. It's a fantastic game, but good to buy on sale. To me, not worth $10

LIMBO is a game for people who really wish to please cultural gatekeepers who don't even like the video games medium to begin with. One thing gamers in general need to understand is that presentation=/= content. The first thing you see when you start the game up is the minimalist gothic art style and the first thing most players will wonder is where the game is going to go with this aesthetic. The answer is nowhere, because the presentation is the full extent of the actual "narrative" content. From the beginning you have a hodge podge of haunting purgatory imagery including giant spiders, brain slugs and killer children in the spirit of Lord of the Flies. You also have your dead children strewn about for easy dark and mature points. This goes on for about a third of the game or about 1 hour before the game swiftly drops the whole aesthetic for generic industrial environments with little to no narrative significance of any sort. The rest of the game consists of challenge rooms which resemble Aperture Science testing chambers with dim lighting.

The actual gameplay consists of generic puzzle platforming with trial and error gameplay. Trial and error gameplay can certainly be valid when it comes to precise and engaging platforming challenges, so long as the player can inform and prepare themselves ahead of time for the challenges. Most of the game though is punking the player with gory deaths, which still isn't a big deal because this game has no consequences for failure. The actual meat of the game starting from the industrial setting onward is box physics puzzles, of the Half-Life 2 variety. If when you played that part where you had to place cinderblocks at the end of a wooden plank to create a seesaw you thought "I want to play a whole game built around this" then this is the game for you.

Most of the puzzles are actually built around the loose physics engine, and the puzzles are less challenging to solve as they are hard to execute. Most of this comes from it being difficult to get the janky physics to do what you want, so the game is only hard so far as it can be difficult to get the physics to behave how you want them to. Curiously, the boy character is also subject to the spazzy physics, so deaths in which the player is likely supposed to feel disquieted are more unintentionally humorous as death by tragic purgatory metaphor may result in the boy character doing cartwheels.

This game doesn't merit being called pretentious, since pretension implies that there was an actual attempt at depth. This game is a generic flash platformer with a gothic aesthetic that runs for some time until it suddenly ends, complete with a "I wonder what it all means ;^)" ending. The gameplay isn't notable in any way either, and feels a bit amateur. All in all I can't recommend this game on any level, not even on sale, since there is a plethora of interesting games to find on steam both indie and professional which actually remember what the point of a game is.

To end this review on a positive note, I recommend you buy Abe's Oddysee in place of this game. It is a much more engaging, fun and challenging puzzle platformer, with actually palpable themes and a narrative.

Rather enjoyable puzzles with grotesque story.

I would NOT recommend it to play with kids.
This game unique on its own terms and still enjoyable for not hardcore indie gamers.

Limbo,
pas un gros jeu où on peut passer des centaines d'heures, pas de gameplay époustouflant mais un jeu culte, un univers vraiment superbe, pour un jeu en 2D une vraie merveille, il ne coùte pas cher mais il vaut vraiment le détour, un univers à la fois sombre, triste et innocent qui lui est propre, un jeu prennant de plateforme/réflexion avec une athmosphère très réussie !

This game is really good. It's simplistic, low budget and quintessentially indie, but that's what makes it great. The puzzles are perfect, the atmosphere is well done, and it's just a great game to shut your brain off and play for a bit.

One of the best games I have ever played. Not only was the story touching but it was also visually pleasing. One of the best parts about this game would be the feeling of satisfaction you get from completing a puzzle.

It's interesting that this game is so highly acclaimed. I definitely wouldn't recommend it, especially for $11.

I actually don't mind the trial and error nature of the puzzles, but the biggest problem in the game lies in that there is no reward for completing them. The "story" is so open-ended/non-existent that completing puzzles basically equates to "getting to walk a little further right". There is no sense of accomplishment related to skill because, to be honest, the puzzles are actually quite easy to solve. You might die a couple times or have to get some aspect of timing down, but that's about it.

As for the artsy side of the game, I think they really made some bad choices in terms of execution and plot. First of all, the setting for the game is in no way captivating. Yeah, the game has a somewhat interesting black and white style to it, but the environments and characters are just too mundane when you also take into account the lack of plot. The gameplay really isn't very exciting/rewarding and I think the story was too open-ended. I understand the devs intended for the players to draw their own conclusions but I don't think that's an excuse for such a bare-bones presentation. There's lots of other games that have much more fleshed out plots that still leave a lot for the viewer to think about and interpret on their own.

Another thing I find interesting to note is that when I scrolled through the first batch of positive reviews not a single person who liked the game had more than 10 hours in it. Most (even from the positive reviews) had only about 3-6. There is really no replay value whatsoever and I feel like $11 is really a stretch for this game. $5 is more fair but even that would feel like overpaying to me.

Overall, I think many aspects of this game's design severely hold back any potential it might have. To me it translated to a short, boring experience.

This is a fabulous horror-themed puzzle game that will have your palms sweating. It's tough, but beatable, just the right amount of difficulty. It's also darkly beautiful.

Limbo, the game, is special in that while it does not wholly depict that mysterious dimension as my mind did, it captures its essence. You are a boy who wakes up in a lonely world made up only of black, white, and shades of gray. Video game logic demands you walk from left to right, jumping over obstacles as they appear, a simple task that needs little attention in the initial moments. This is your chance to absorb your surroundings. The background provides an illusion of depth, but its branches and bridges are out of focus, as if you are dreaming them into existence. The pint-sized hero, his bright blinking eyes shining from his blackened silhouette, trots ahead with the charming gangliness of a six-year-old.

You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Then comes death. Limbo is a hostile place, home to giant spiders that would feast upon you, and traps apparently scattered by the world's other denizens. You step onto a claw trap, and it closes on your neck. Your head falls to the ground and wobbles just for a moment before lying still. No tears are shed, no music plays--the game provides no grand gesture to honor your demise. It simply happens, and you revive at the most recent checkpoint to try the puzzle again. Some of these deaths aren't outright fair; stepping on a pressure plate could mean certain death, but so could jumping over it. Such inconsistencies aren't common, but your first time in Limbo requires some trial-and-error experimentation. Loading times are short, and checkpoints are frequent, however, so death is rarely a frustration, though often a horror.

What does it all mean? People pondered that question when Limbo was first released on the Xbox 360 in 2010, and the PC version adds nothing new that would illuminate the mystery of this world, so there's little reason to splurge on another version if you've already played. Nevertheless, the ending offers important clues to the greater plot, if not to the details of the game's events and objects--the imposing neon hotel sign that you must cross, for instance, or the murderous children, seemingly escaped from Lord of the Flies, that aim their blowguns at you. Limbo means for its atmosphere to consume you in the moment, and in that sense, it succeeds. You drag a dead child's corpse to solve a puzzle, and perhaps wonder if anyone grieves this lost soul given the apathy of the realm. You glimpse a figure and regard her with tenderness, but the brief glimmer of hope is snuffed out in an instant.

After life, before death.

It isn't until the final third of its two- to three-hour runtime that Limbo's puzzles become challenging. The first half of the game is more concerned with building dread and ambiguity. Even after being vanquished, a colossal spider's remaining leg thrusts at you from its thorax, one final act of defiance that could leave two corpses for the crows to pick. When you pull the leg from the spider, the audible cracks and visible white splatters emphasize just how recently its life force was crushed. Elsewhere, you push boxes and pull levers, rushing to finish the puzzle before the rising water fills the room. Failure means watching the dear boy go as limp as a ragdoll as liquid fills his lungs.

The second half leaves behind the horrors in favor of puzzles involving gravity and complex machinery. As memorable as it is to navigate tilting rooms with only a few hanging lamps to light the way, it is that spider that most embodies Limbo's somber spirit. The later puzzles are complex and clever, but they don't haunt the heart. The finale feels abrupt because it returns to the first hour's imagery, having abandoned it for long enough to have altered your personal connection with the game from an emotional one to an intellectual one. And yet the end offers insight into a backstory left otherwise untouched--enough of it to inspire another playthrough, this time ever so much wiser than you were before.

Limbo is basicly a short-ish puzzle platformer thats about a young boy entering limbo, to save his sister (although we only know this because of the games description, it doesnt actually tell you whats going on in game). and its hella good. i got it as a gift, but defo worth the full amount. P.S its so damn brutal at times D:

A fantastic little, morbid adventure. Dark and gloomy. Vague and gorey. Clever and enraging.

This is an artistic platform game that forces you to think outside the box--quite often, but every successful attempt is rewarding and leaves you feeling accomplished.

This game touched me more than you might expect on an emotional level, too. I affectionately refer to the player as "Billy" because he doesn't really have a name. And he doesn't really talk. Or... anything, really. But that's part of the charm!

It's a platform game with a delightful twist. It's kinda creepy and fun. Expect to die a lot but once you get that "Aha!" moment, it makes it all worth it.

The checkpoints are also really handy and the game is merciless but not punishing, if that makes sense.

A fun little adventure. 5/5 might seem like much but I'm rating it not based on what it is, but what it's trying to be. And it succeeds in its goal of being a clever, original platformer.

pros:

-excellent feel of creepiness and isolation
-great ambient music and sounds
-good mix of action sequences (usually involving getting away from violent death) and puzzles

cons:
-kinda short
-very basic platformer mechanics

overall, one of the best indie games I had the chance to play

This is a great game. Basically, its exactly as the game description states: 'Uncertain of his sister's fate, a boy enters LIMBO'. You start in LIMBO, and straight from the off, there are puzzles galore. The little character that you're controlling is good fun, and sound's play a big part. Also, you'll probably become hesitant at certain things, after you die so many times.
But its still good in that respect.
At some points, I was losing my mind, trying desperatly to get to the next part, but carry on, and you'll be so pleased when you get past it.
Overall, a great game. Created a Let's Play, which only just started to release, but I loved it a lot. Recommended to anyone!!

Unfortunately, a beautiful art style and atmosphere is all this game has going for it. The puzzles are tedious and unintuitive (eg. One puzzle is solved by luring some creature out of a hole with food and then chasing that creature to a giant hamster wheel. This, for some reason, triggers a hurricane and fills a hole with water for you cross over on top of a log...). Many of the puzzles require precison timing, which would be fine if the character wasn't restrictively and frustratingly slow.

+ Nice art style
+ Good use of atmosphere
+ Simple and fluid controls

- Overall tedious and bland gameplay
- Puzzles are more difficult to complete due to restrictive game mechanics (speed, physics) than actual complexity

I actually think I would enjoy this game more if all the puzzles were removed and the focus was solely on the atmosphere, because walking and exploring were more fun for me than actually doing the puzzles.
