Great artstyle , hit or miss puzzles, sublime controls. Does 2 1/2 of the 3 things it set out to do. Pretty good, I must say.

This game is the best choise for people, who are really tired of stupid horror games with fast enemies and flashing light. First, you see little boy with big head and eyes and shorts. Next moment his ♥♥♥♥ing bowels are broken by bear trap.
It has amazing atmosphere of horror for wordly-wise people. And these challenges...mm.. they are really tasty!

On the other hand, I hate urbanistic locations. If all game took place in the forests, swamps and meadows, it would be better.

Great game! Although a little short its worth it for the humerously inventive deaths and occasionally head-scratching puzzles, but the darkly atmouspheric and subtle, sinister, creepy and eerily beautiful visuals are by far this games best quality

The puzzles were difficult for me, so the game went by really slowly and I trudged through walkthroughs to get to the end. There is no narration whatsoever but the visuals and the concept are revolutionary for their time. The ending disappointed me though.

The worst thing about this game is trying to explain to friends how a black & white, side scrolling platformer can be so atmospheric and so bloody good! After all, most modern games are all whizz-bang, cinematic affairs, so how can something so simple be so much more involving? Simple:

*Atmosphere - The depth of the screen goes far beyond the protagonist you play and the use of every shade of black, grey & white makes up for the lack of colour. The low hum of the 'music' also adds to the overall immersion.

*Puzzles - From basic "move this block" and "switch this switch" to mind-bending, screen flipping, "get the timing right" puzzles, the variety and complexity (in some cases) really get you scratching your head.

*One more go & Satisfaction - Yes you will die (a LOT), and often you need to die to work out how to beat a puzzle, but it rarely gets so frustrating that you won't dust down the little guy and crack on beating the thing that just caused his demise.

*Saves - once you've completed a puzzle you've done it. No re-doing sections or boring bits to get right again and again. The loads are super quick too!

*Awww my poor guy - You get to see the character die in many gruesome ways, from spiders to guns and from mad falls to drowning. You'll also see him dismembered and crushed by unfeeling machinery, along with having his mind taken over by....*Spoiler stop!

Only negatives are:

1. Some of the later puzzles are extremely reliant on timing and leaps of faith. But it rarely gets frustrating and it's often your own lack of button-pressing skills that are at fault, rather than the game.

2. The ending is..... well, do yourself a favour and find out for yourself. Buy this game!

This is an almost perfect game and I'd recommed it (and have) to anyone and everyone.

This game is really awesome, with beautiful black and white graphics. It may seem so but it's not simplist at all, the animations are really well done, and the puzzles are the right difficulty. Defenetely worth a try!

This game is about two things, pretty pictures and creating a certain atmosphere. It tries to tell its story completely through the environment, but the farther I got into the game the more I suspected the game didn't actually have a story. The ending felt to me like a quick attempt to make the rest of the game some symbollic metaphor, but to me it felt as though the ending was just an attempt to argue that the game does have a story and is not a mish-mash of disconnected environments, which it definitely is. It brings nothing new to the table. The game does have a distinctive art style and a bit of shock value for the first few minutes, but ultimately I don't think it's worth playing. You could get just as much from the game watching someone else play it. The game is almost more of an interactive video than a game, I mean you do control the character and I think there were a couple little puzzles, but the gameplay itself is so flat and dry it might as well be a point and click.

That being said, it is a pretty game. To sum it up: It's a brillant work of art presented in the form of a particularly bland platformer.

Very atmospheric 2D platformer with smart but difficult puzzles

Limbo is a traditional popular dance contest that originated on the island of Trinidad.

A horizontal bar, known as the limbo bar, is placed atop two vertical bars. All contestants must attempt to go under the bar with their backs facing the floor. Whoever knocks the bar off or falls is eliminated from the contest. After everyone has completed their turns, the bar is lowered slightly and the contest continues. The contest ends when only one person can successfully "limbo" under the bar. (SOURCE WIKIPDEDIA.ORG)

And this is exactly how I felt during the game. Every new stage, every new puzzle is raising the difficutly, but motivates you equally to finally finish this classic of the artsy gaming genre.

What I liked

  • Very deep atmosphere with great colour scheme in black, grey and white
  • Smart puzzles that feel so rewarding after completion
  • Fair set back points
  • Native 3D Vision support
  • Length of the game is perfect for one session the weekend or in the evening after work
  • Audio fits perfect the graphic style and listening to sounds is important to solve puzzles

What I didn't like

  • Sometimes to difficult to solve without a walkthrough guide / do not feel embarrassed to use one
  • SPOILER: the end is definitely not rewarding for all the trouble you have gone through

A 2D platformer that was rated overwhelming postive throughout the industry and deserves the designation of "classic" . Every gamer should have taken a look at it. Highly recommended. Not for full price. But pick it up on sale (5 EUR would be fair)

Limbo is basicly a short-ish puzzle platformer thats about a young boy entering limbo, to save his sister (although we only know this because of the games description, it doesnt actually tell you whats going on in game). and its hella good. i got it as a gift, but defo worth the full amount. P.S its so damn brutal at times D:

Limbo, the game, is special in that while it does not wholly depict that mysterious dimension as my mind did, it captures its essence. You are a boy who wakes up in a lonely world made up only of black, white, and shades of gray. Video game logic demands you walk from left to right, jumping over obstacles as they appear, a simple task that needs little attention in the initial moments. This is your chance to absorb your surroundings. The background provides an illusion of depth, but its branches and bridges are out of focus, as if you are dreaming them into existence. The pint-sized hero, his bright blinking eyes shining from his blackened silhouette, trots ahead with the charming gangliness of a six-year-old.

You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Then comes death. Limbo is a hostile place, home to giant spiders that would feast upon you, and traps apparently scattered by the world's other denizens. You step onto a claw trap, and it closes on your neck. Your head falls to the ground and wobbles just for a moment before lying still. No tears are shed, no music plays--the game provides no grand gesture to honor your demise. It simply happens, and you revive at the most recent checkpoint to try the puzzle again. Some of these deaths aren't outright fair; stepping on a pressure plate could mean certain death, but so could jumping over it. Such inconsistencies aren't common, but your first time in Limbo requires some trial-and-error experimentation. Loading times are short, and checkpoints are frequent, however, so death is rarely a frustration, though often a horror.

What does it all mean? People pondered that question when Limbo was first released on the Xbox 360 in 2010, and the PC version adds nothing new that would illuminate the mystery of this world, so there's little reason to splurge on another version if you've already played. Nevertheless, the ending offers important clues to the greater plot, if not to the details of the game's events and objects--the imposing neon hotel sign that you must cross, for instance, or the murderous children, seemingly escaped from Lord of the Flies, that aim their blowguns at you. Limbo means for its atmosphere to consume you in the moment, and in that sense, it succeeds. You drag a dead child's corpse to solve a puzzle, and perhaps wonder if anyone grieves this lost soul given the apathy of the realm. You glimpse a figure and regard her with tenderness, but the brief glimmer of hope is snuffed out in an instant.

After life, before death.

It isn't until the final third of its two- to three-hour runtime that Limbo's puzzles become challenging. The first half of the game is more concerned with building dread and ambiguity. Even after being vanquished, a colossal spider's remaining leg thrusts at you from its thorax, one final act of defiance that could leave two corpses for the crows to pick. When you pull the leg from the spider, the audible cracks and visible white splatters emphasize just how recently its life force was crushed. Elsewhere, you push boxes and pull levers, rushing to finish the puzzle before the rising water fills the room. Failure means watching the dear boy go as limp as a ragdoll as liquid fills his lungs.

The second half leaves behind the horrors in favor of puzzles involving gravity and complex machinery. As memorable as it is to navigate tilting rooms with only a few hanging lamps to light the way, it is that spider that most embodies Limbo's somber spirit. The later puzzles are complex and clever, but they don't haunt the heart. The finale feels abrupt because it returns to the first hour's imagery, having abandoned it for long enough to have altered your personal connection with the game from an emotional one to an intellectual one. And yet the end offers insight into a backstory left otherwise untouched--enough of it to inspire another playthrough, this time ever so much wiser than you were before.

THE GOOD
Striking atmosphere that chills the heart
Excellent, poignant moments that stay with you
Cold, gruesome deaths are presented with memorable and horrific apathy
Introduces more involved puzzles at a satisfying pace

THE BAD
The most haunting imagery is limited to the first half
Ending doesn't emerge organically from the hour leading to it
8/10

A fantastic little, morbid adventure. Dark and gloomy. Vague and gorey. Clever and enraging.

This is an artistic platform game that forces you to think outside the box--quite often, but every successful attempt is rewarding and leaves you feeling accomplished.

This game touched me more than you might expect on an emotional level, too. I affectionately refer to the player as "Billy" because he doesn't really have a name. And he doesn't really talk. Or... anything, really. But that's part of the charm!

It's a platform game with a delightful twist. It's kinda creepy and fun. Expect to die a lot but once you get that "Aha!" moment, it makes it all worth it.

The checkpoints are also really handy and the game is merciless but not punishing, if that makes sense.

A fun little adventure. 5/5 might seem like much but I'm rating it not based on what it is, but what it's trying to be. And it succeeds in its goal of being a clever, original platformer.
