It's a nice looking platformer which doesn't deviate much from the formula, therefore ideal for lovers of the classic genre. Some of the characters seem like they're on catnip and they add a lot to the light-hearted humor. The graphics are sharp and gameplay smooth; boss fights may get frustrating at times since there don't really seem to call for a strategy but luck. The music in the earliest areas was headache inducing, but other than that, this game is worth its price. Try it.

Hunter’s Legacy feels like a classic without becoming a soulless clone, adding its own twist to the genre and serving it up in a lovely hand-drawn package. It’s definitely worth a look to fans of the genre, though the difficulty may scare off newcomers.

https://youtu.be/6PLZP4FMEcE

.Story.
You are Ikki, a warrior kitty who must save her people and defeat Morodir, a magical villain who stole the Fang of Alliance and caused the kingdom of Iripur to crumble.

You must travel across the world in order to locate mystical gems, tear down a magical barrier, and finally face the cloaked villain to save the day.

.Gameplay.
You play Hunter’s Legacy completely by keyboard. You move with WASD and use spacebar to jump. J is your melee attack, K is your ranged attack, which can be charged to release a more powerful magical shot in order to clear destructible objects, and L is a dodge roll. You also have the ability to wall jump (environment allowing).

This is a platformer, so you’ll be spending most of your time jumping from surface to surface, circumventing obstacles, and battling enemies. Every area has its own set of enemies that will require you to learn their attack patterns and their own bosses, which will require the same thing. Either way, you will die a few times until you’ve got them down to a science.

The game feels very reminiscent of platformers of old and this is definitely a good thing.

.Atmosphere.
Hunter’s Legacy looks great. The hand-drawn art style is unique and the animations are smooth. I’ve experienced no drops in frame rate during my playthrough.

The soundtrack is also nice, though nothing awe-inspiring. It remains on pace with the action, not ever overshadowing the action, and avoids being overly repetitive.

*The sound that Ikki makes while attacking leaves a lot to be desired, but this is minor.

.Longevity.
There aren’t any challenges of any sort, and no collectibles to be had so there’s no real artificial inflation of play time. I can’t imagine wanting to play through the game again after beating it seeing as it isn’t procedurally generated, but it took me 4 hours to get to the second boss and I imagine there will be several more to come.

The game is a difficult one and certainly skill-based, so results may vary.

.Pros and Cons.
  • Smooth, responsive controls.
  • Lovely hand-drawn graphics.
  • Level design. You have to figure out how to move from point A to point B and solve puzzles along the way in order to clear a path.
  • Aforementioned puzzles are just difficult enough to make you stop and think. There’s a sense of accomplishment after you’ve solved one.
  • Upgrade system. These effect various aspects of gameplay from combat strength to how much cash you can carry.
  • Boss fights are challenging. You have to think on your feet and use a combination of the skills and gadgets available to you in order to conquer them. You may fail a few times in order to get their patterns down, but the feeling of satisfaction once you pull off the feat is well worth it.
  • A sense of nostalgia. Hunter’s Legacy wears its influences from the classics on its sleeve without feeling like a clone of any one game.
  • Cats!

  • The story is a little cliché and blah. It’s not terribly important to enjoy the game, but still.
  • Level design. Sometimes it’s not obvious where you need to go or what needs to be done, so you spend a lot of time backtracking or dying to trial and error.
  • Frustrating levels of challenge may turn off more casual fans of the genre.
  • No options to rebind keys. J, K, and L are a little strange (to me, at least).

.Bottom Line.
Hunter’s Legacy is a solid platformer with a decent amount of challenge wrapped up in a hand-drawn art style. Its asking price is very reasonable as the game will take you several hours to complete. While the story may not be memorable, the characters you meet will be, as will the hand-drawn art style and the variety of locations and enemies.

Veterans of the platforming genre will be right at home here, though even less hardcore fans will find something in this stylish little indie adventure.

Note: I was provided with a key for this game from “TeamTom Reviews”, who in turn received the key from the publishers. This does not change my opinion on the game itself.

Hunter’s Legacy is a side scrolling action platformer game with a hint of metroidvania thrown in there. The story is pretty cliché. You’re playing as the huntress cat called Ikki in the town of Iripur. Their ‘Fang of Alliance’ has been stolen by the evil Morodir and Ikki is the only one who can get it back. Without the Fang of Alliance their town is decaying evil is spreading. If Ikki is the huntress, the name of the game should’ve been Huntress’ Legacy in my opinion.

Graphics:

The game features sharp, cartoon-like graphics. The art-work is pretty nice and the game isn’t bad looking at all. The color scheme is also pretty neat, not the brightest colors but certainly not dull either. The game is locked at 60 FPS and I didn’t have problems with the FPS. There was occasional stutter though but I think that just might be my network connection (played using steam’s in-home streaming).

Sound:

The music is nice in this game but there isn’t a lot of variety. The levels can be long so hearing the same music all the time can get boring, not to mention frustrating if you get stuck at a part in the game. The sounds of getting hit, blade hitting aren’t that good and in my opinion pretty bland.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is pretty interesting, it’s not the best platformer out there but it definitely isn’t bad either. You play as the huntress cat Ikki. Your main goal is to get the Fang of Alliance back from Morodir. You go after him and he runs away and seals the entrance after him. This entrance can only be opened if the 3 orbs represented on the seal are found and brought there. So Ikki goes on the journey to find these Orbs. She has a sword attack and a bow which can shoot arrows. Later down the game you can upgrade these and you can upgrade your bow to shoot arrows which you can charge by holding the attack button. You can climb up on ledges, break blocks, grass with the sword and shoot arrows in any direction. You can also roll around to dodge enemies’ attack. You also gain a down strike later in the game which can be used to access areas which previously couldn’t be accesses by breaking special blocks using this ability.

There’s a lot of variety of enemies, from slow slugs to bees to cactuses to the most annoying enemy ever, the flying elves. These guys can shoot you through walls and you can’t do anything about it other than trying to doge their super-fast projectiles. Some enemies can only be killed using the charged arrows shots which can be annoying as shooting the arrows at the right place can be a bit wonky as you have to hold the fire button and adjust the aim and then shoot, this can be difficult in the heat of battle.

There’s checkpoints at regular intervals so that’s a good thing. There’s also teleporters in levels which save your game and act like checkpoints so that’s a bonus. You can use these teleporters to go to any level you have previously been in. You also get a map where you can see all the locations you have visited already and areas you haven’t been to yet. You can go into the town itself and talk to people, sort of like an RPG.

You can cut grass with your sword and break blocks as well. Doing these can get you extra arrows you can use or fishes which restore some of your health. You also get coins from chests and sometimes in the grass. These coins can be used to purchase upgrades and health fill-ups from the town. Weapon upgrades can also be purchased at the town and so can health upgrades. These upgrades require ores as well as coins. The coins can be found easily but these ores can be a pain to find. I played almost halfway through the game and I had not found any ore’s yet. At the start your money bag has a limit of 300 which can be expanded by finding secret areas with these small leprechaun type creatures who ask for some money for some mysterious item. They will give you bags which can hold more money. The same case with the arrows bag. The game can get difficult in the later levels but mostly due to the fact that some enemies are super annoying and cheap.

That pretty much sums up the gameplay, if you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments section of this review. A short gameplay video can be found below:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=729950143

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 5/10
Gameplay: 7/10
Overall: 6/10

Conclusion:

The game has pretty average gameplay and story. Length wise you can expect 6-7 hours of gameplay and if you try to find the secret locations or do the achievements you can get 10 hours of play time.

This is a first impression review.

I have enjoyed the time I have spent in this game so far. Is there something "special" about it that makes me enjoy it? The honest truth is, no, not really. The combat is typical and the story line as well, but it is a well crafted game with few if any bugs that I have found that is easy to learn and fun to play. My only critique so far would be the same as many others which is the rarity of ore that is used to upgrade skills. I also had some minor difficulty with controls but I only use a keyboard and mouse. And it was minor, this was quickly resolved. For the price and the amount of gameplay there is, quality gameplay, I would say pick it up if this is the game style you like to play. You won't be disappointed.

The Good

- Beautiful art design
- Can continue from your demo game
- Smooth controls
- Fun, addictive and challenging gameplay
- Inventory layout looked great (wasn't cluttered)
- Upgrade system was easy to understand
- Unlockable abilities as you progress through the game
- World map is surprisingly larger then expected (many levels)
- Level designs were beautifull and large. All came with their own enviromental hazards or dangerous mechanics
- There are multiple areas to explore in one level (other than the obvious way to get to the end)
- Large variety of enemies
- (sort of) Side missions to upgrade wallet size or collect ore for upgrades
- Boss fights are clever and challenging
- 6+ hours of gameplay
- The price ($6.99) You get more then your moenys worth in Hunter's Legacy

The Bad

- Villian isn't explained
- Fang of Alliance isn't explained
- Story starts and stops at the beginning of the game
- Minor controller connection issue
- Difficulty fluctuation (easy to hard out of no where and back to easy again)
- Random and rare frame drops

I have more point but I don't want to spoil too much about the game. Ultimately I enjoyed Hunter's Legacy a lot. I will say for anyone out there looking to get immersed in a story should avoid this game. I think the developers focused more on the combat/gameplay/smooth controls/and overall fun of the game.

I did a more thorough explanation on my channel for anyone who wants to know more.

-Pros-
-Solid Controls
-Great Art Design
-Nice Game Length for an Indie Platformer game 6+ hours on average
-Excellent Price for what is offered

-Cons-
-Upgrade System is a annoying, you can find a ton of coins, but you need ORE to upgrade and I only found (2) throughout my gameplay so I could barely upgrade anything. I searched for ORE in every stage, even going back multiple times but still couldnt find any more.
-Story is very weak, with not much explained very well
-Boss Fights are a bit OP since upgrading is a PITA
-Certain areas had glitchy moments, like the Dragon Boss Fight where I kept being thrown through walls, but this will likely be fixed with updates.

Overall, for the price, I recommend the game. If you are interested in Metroidvania style Platformers, you will likely get your money's worth with this one, just don;t expect to be blown away.
If I didnt get so annoyed with the lack of ORE I probably would of enjoyed it a bit more, but I was still able to get through the game with just a sword upgrade.
As with any Metroidvania style game, you are expected to go back through stages once new abilities are attained to access areas you couldn't before. I just wish those new areas would of had something other than "coin" chests and/or switches to progress. As you can tell, I'm really bothered by the lack of ORE.

Hunter's Legacy is an average to above average action platformer.

The game's basics are what you would expect from the genre. You jump between platforms avoiding obstacles and enemies. You have a sword and arrow attack. Basically you go around the world gathering new abilities that you use to beat the final boss.

At first I found Hunter's Legacy to be a little slow. The first couple of levels don't really do anything highly original. The beginning of the game is perfectly fine but doesn't really grab you since it just feels like every other action platformer.
Then at around the halfway point the game turns the corner. This is mostly because the game starts to add some more original mechanics to the game. I particularly liked the hot/cold mechanic that is featured in one of the worlds/lands. The final level is also really well designed utilizing all the skills and abilities learned throughout the game.

Difficulty wise I would say the early game is pretty easy while the later game is moderately difficult. The bosses are not surprisingly the hardest parts of the game. The rest of the challenge comes from the occasional "cheap" hit where you get hit when you probably shouldn't have due to it being hard to sometimes tell where the collision detection is on various hazards and enemies.

Length wise I would say the game is around 7-9 hours. If you go after all of the bonus/secret levels you might get a couple more hours out of the game.

Basically I would say that Hunter's Legacy is a good action platformer but I have played better games in the genre. If you don't like the genre the game is not going to be for you. If you like the genre though I think you will enjoy the game.

Try it.
