It's a little embarrassing how addicted to this game I've become :| I don't know why everyone complains about things being "shoved in your face", sure there are nice objects that they want you to pay for, but you can also find a LOT of even nicer stuff online that is user created and you can download for free. Once you start downloading that stuff you'll really find yourself falling deeper as it's really fun to find new clothes, hairstyles, objects, you can even download entire houses that are beautiful. (Also you can easily disable a lot of the "purchasable content" popups so it doesn't bother you).
I bought this while it was on sale and I would definitely reccomend that. During the next sale I will be buying one or two expansion packs like Ambitions. I wouldn't even consider buying them at their full price though, so it's likely I will get a bit bored of the game between now and then as I've already maxed out 3 careers and my sim has more money than I know what to do with. For now it's fun to try different career paths, constantly renovate my house and mess with other sims relationships. Have a play and don't take it as seriously as some of the whiners who leave bad reviews :)

Sims 3 is a great game. I got the game when I first came out but re-purchased it this year. I've read the reviews about the DLC and I have to agree, wait for when they're discounted. Of the DLC's, many recommended Ambitions, Generations, Into the Future, Late Night, Pets, Seasons, Supernatural, University Life, and World Adventures. Many reviewers have said to stay away from Island Paradise; it makes Sims 3 unstable.

As for me, I'm content with just having Ambitions, Generations, Seasons, University Life and World Adventures. I may pick up Into the Future and Pets when they are discounted again. I'm not into the supernatural so I won't get Supernatural and Late Night (it has vampires in it).

EDITED REVIEW:

This is a DECENT game, even when it's just in vanilla form. However, I would hesitate to recommend this to anybody for a few reasons that are worth considering before start handing over your money to Electronic Arts. And let's be honest. If you play this game enough, you're going to buy more than just the base game. That's how it was designed.
The first reason I would hesitate to recommend it is because it's a SHAMELESS cash-grab. It's over 7 years old and each of the expansions and stuff packs costs as much as a typical game. And if you think that's bad, just wait! From the moment you start playing, the game will try to hook you with endless microtransactions just about anywhere it can put them. Even the loading screens are just advertisements for DLCs. Compulsive shoppers, beware.
The second reason is that some important features, such as Create A World, are unavailable for Steam users. Fortunately, you can re-download it through Origin for free, as well as any expansions and stuff packs you get through Steam (though I'm told it's a pain). This was probably intended by EA to punish players who don't use their (inferior) service.

Other than that, this game is pretty good. When it comes to actual gameplay, I don't have much to complain about. If the basic concept appeals to you or you're already a fan of the series, I would recommend it if it's on a massive sale.

Sims 3 is a competent life simulation. it's somewhat heavy on the cleaning, homework, bad smells and bad moods for my taste, but that can be modified through programmed in cheat codes, along with money, housing, etc.

the reason I do NOT recommend the game is because the game constantly pushes the player to buy stuff inside the game for MORE MONEY. CONSTANTLY. Any time you add a couch or flower pot to your little sims' house, five much nicer options are presented that you have to pay real money for. This is very irritating and completely unnecessary.
Also, the player must purchase DLC for BASIC simulation areas like weather, beach visits, careers, etc. The whole thing is a pretty annoying money grab.
It's completely annoying that the player spends anywhere from $20 to $60 on a game and the game constantly pesters the player for more money.
I own many games and DLC that never pester the player for more money. Sims 3 is VERY unusual in this regard.
If you buy this game, do NOT spend more money for clothes, furniture, houses, etc. there are plenty of sites that offer free downloads of stuff that is much better than what is sold inside the game. Also there are many mods that improve this game for free.

The Sims 3:

Review changed from positive to negative since the game cannot recognise my newest graphics card (GTX 970). It's choppy as hell and the graphics are downgraded to the lowest possible, despite my high end PC.

If you have an older computer and are interested in this, go right ahead and read my analysis of the game.

Positives:

+ Purchase a house for your family or build and design your own with hundreds of customisation options. Buy pools, spas, outdoor living areas, decorative garden plants, televisions, exercise machines, kitchen appliances, cars....the list is huge!
+ Work as a master criminal, a journalist or even a detective. Go travelling to...Egypt, France and China (with DLC). This game is packed with plenty to do.
+ Many different skills for your sims to level up, from science to cooking. So you can have a very varied gameplay experience.
+ Several neighbourhoods to play in, each with a unique layout.
+ There's a large amount of playtime in the Sims 3 for players of all sorts. I managed to get about 100 hours out of it.

Negatives:

- While I acknowledge graphics aren't a major focus of Sims gameplay, it could definitely be improved. Aesthetically, this game is disappointing.
- Despite the vastness of Sims 3, it can become boring after awhile. Once you're earning a high wage, built a mansion filled with valuable items and had a family, there's really not much else to do. This game has a cycle of repetition, whereby you continue to do the same tasks over and over, just in different ways. Sure, the kids in your family grow up and you're able to control their lives, but it's like starting from scratch again, where's the sense of accomplishment in that? It's the balance between fun and repetitive content which Sims 3 suffers from.
- The game is quite expensive, even though it's now 5 years old (as of 02/03/2014). DLC is also pricey, so make sure you absolutely want this game before paying in full, or wait for a sale.

Overall Score: 7/10 for those with older systems
0/10 for those with state of the art PCs

The Sims 3 is a nice, relaxing game with many interesting features. For fans of the series, it's really worth checking it out. For those that are new to the game, I recommend grabbing this too, but just be aware of the many flaws.
