The game is good, I remember playing this a decade ago. But I'm here to issue a warning: the game runs very inefficiently on newer systems. It was designed and optimized for one core, so if you have a middling laptop, you may want to steer clear. I've even heard of very beefy desktops struggling with it, possibly compatibility issues. You may actually find the newer games run better than this.

REVIEW
Total War: Rome is a military oriented real time strategy game set during the time of both the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. You start off choosing your faction, either mighty Rome (several "houses" for Rome to choose from) or from several other factions such as Germany, Carthage, Gaul, Egypt and others. The game is centered on an "overworld" view of the map where you can see armies, navies, cities, and terrain. This is also where you issue move orders, build orders, or attack orders. Other tabs that tell you detailed information are also available from the overworld view. These tabs include Missions, Diplomacy, Economy, Family, and a list of all your units and settlements. Diplomacy is done through the diplomacy screen where you can make alliances, buy land, make tribute, and declare war. You'll start with a Royal Family and you'll want to marry the females of your family to strong and influential Generals. And make sure you have your best Generals leading your armies! You can also build buildings in your settlements, such as Breweries to increase happiness or a Blacksmith for a bonus to attack strength for all future units built there. Coastal settlements will get the benefit of having access to naval buildings and units. For battle the game is played on a real time overview of the engagment. You have direct command of each of your units, giving you complete control of the battle. If your command skills arn't too great you have the option of always "auto-resolving" your battles, letting your General or a Captain chosen from among your men to lead and the battle will be over in a click of a button. Each faction has varied unit types such as the German Berzerker and the Roman Urban Cohort. The units available range from infantry to cavalry and siege engines such as Catapults and Ballistas. The infantry and cavalry have swordsmen and spearmen along with archers and slingers with some specials like war dogs and incendiary pigs. Have your men charge the enemy, hold their ground, form a phalanx, testudo, or a mass of meat and muscle. Win the day by slaughtering all your enemies or in a siege capturing their town centre. The sounds in this game are pretty good in my opinion. The music keeps me entertained and it changes for whats happening at the time in-game. The voice acting is good too, for what there is of it. And the sounds of battle keep my blood pumping with the screams, yells, clangs, bangs, and the sound of thousands of men moving in sword-play. The graphics are a bit dated but there not bad at all. After you've completed the campaign and conquered the world, go head to head against other players in multiplayer. Go at it one on one or team up for an epic four on four for epic battles.

CONS
Theres no overview of naval battles, only auto resolves.
No multiplayer campaign.
Minor bugs/glitches (but what game is perfect?)

RATING: 5/5 Excellent

Rome Total War is one of my favorite video games. I've been playing it since it was launched, in 2004 and even after so many years, it's still very entertaining and challenging. Thanks to the Total War series, I became interested in history and geography, two subjects which shaped my formal years of education. The game's engine is easy to tweak and modify, having a plethora of mods online. The best one remains Europa Barbarorum, a mod which stretches RTW' engine to it's very limits. Even if to some players, Rome Total War's graphics might seem outdated, it remains an echelon by which all 3D RTS/TBS hybrids, measure themselves. None are it's equals.

I started with this game on the Total War Series. And man those games sucked the life out of me. I think i have more than 300 hours on playtime on the Rome Series. It's an old game I know but worth every penny especially nowadays that it's so cheap.
I know it's old graphic and stuff can be boring, but the gameplay especially with some great mods it has make it's a great time killer.
I really love this series.

Overall Score 9/10

My thoughts of Rome: Total War. - by the RoyalPikeman

foreword:

For many people, especially for the ones, who arn't used to older games, Rome might be a true “oldie“. I bought RTW as my second ever computer game back in 2006, when I was 9 years old. Even now the game feeling hasn't changed at all.
I still get this goose bumps moment whenever I hear the music in the main menu.

the game itself:

RTW can cause a very diverse game feeling, depending on what you like. Whether you look at the Imperial Campaign, which gives you the possibility to fight massive battles and conquer a huge empire; or you focus more on the multiplayer, that offers you battles up to 8 players on great maps and which includes a nice, helpfull and fair community, depends fully on your own preferences.

my own opinion and the peroration:

Rome: Total War was a part of my childhood, no doubt.
The game itself, with all of it's historic details and variety can only be overtrumped by it's amazing multiplayer.

Rome: Total War is a MUST-buy for all history- and strategy-fans.

I rate it: 10/10

This game is very very cool, classic, fun, nice, blah blah blah... don't listen to me, just buy it!!! and if you meet the low FPS problem, I want you to know that YOU are not alone...

I love this game very very much. This is the first Total War game that I've played (~10 years ago), and it still be one of the best Total War ever (better than Rome II in some ways). The compatability problem is the only one problem of this game, for example, low FPS problem with the new generation graphic card (but CD version has no any problems about the compatability).
Finally, if CA read this, I want you to know that there are a lot of people who still love this game. Please release PATCH to fix this problem.

Please CA, and I will buy Total War: Warhammer!!!

Have played Rome: total war every now and then since 2004. Just finished my latest 20-hour campaign in the game, so this is without doubt playable even as in 2016 there are more modern total war games available. Didn't experience a single crash while playing (windows 7).

Rome has some some issues: archers are undoubtedly underpowered, whole army can rout within seconds after the fight begins, senate's missions are sometimes nosense, AI can't handle siege battles, AI campaign logic is from USSR, etc.

When Rome was released in 2004 it was a solid 10/10, something that haven't seen before. You can greatly improve the main game with wide variety of mods. When played today you can see the flaws, but still want to play just one more turn.

10 - Perfect game
9 - Excelent game, best of the genre
8 - Good game, worth your time
7 - Average game, nothing really special
6 - Bad game, avoid
5 - Painful to play, completely waste of time
4 - Failed game, unpayable

They may try, but they will never beat Rome: Total War.

Of course, the game is ageing, and with each new Total War iteration struggling to refine the gameplay it was always going to age somewhat badly. The soldiers which at the time seemed technological marvels now look blocky and cartoony, the campaign map looks less vibrant and more modular, the little portraits, banners and such all look unimpressive and much of the interface seems vaguely unresponsibe, low resolution and unattractive.

But they will never beat this game.

What was Rome Total War? Think of cars coming into a world of carts, think of chocolate coming into a world of porridge. People had dreamed of seeing the vast armies portrayed as 2D sprites in the original Shogun: Total War in glorious full 3D, and this game delivered in every way imaginable. The roman cities were sparkling, shining in the sun, the landscapes were the scale of the real world and the armies were, indeed, massive. The formations looked just as good as you always hoped they would, and things like charges had the very, excellent, feeling that we had all imagined.

Not only that, but the game was deep and huge, with hours upon hours of varied gameplay promised, with any faction we wiped out in one playthrough being available to control in the next campaign - something that Empire: Total War really should have allowed. The (strangely Australian) tutorial woman left nothing to chance, and we never felt out of control, rushed, or under any pressure that was not a direct result of our own actions (all faults that would plague later titles in the series, in my eyes)

The characters were great - real world names popping up here and there, generals increasing in effectivness. Money flowed relatively easily if you were but a little thoughtful about it, and developing more advanced troops was intuitive and straightforward.

In short, this game got everything right. It has just the right mix of gameplay imposition and gamer imposition, input from both sources comign together to create a sandbox empire building experience that could suck you in and satisfied you for tens, hundreds of hours.

Amazing game.
