Better than chest. Brings the history to life. Almost as if you were a general commanding the army and a bird watching the war. You also feel like a king ruling his kingdom.

Haven’t played this since it was sold on CD. Bought on steam for 3 dollars

Join 2v2 with friend

Friend wants to play as barbarians

I refuse; a true roman would join the legion

We play as rome v barbarians

He brings a balanced force including war machines and skirmishers

I bring a ♥♥♥♥ ton of legionary cohorts

I also point up a maxed out praetorian cohort; it costs more than 3 legionary cohorts

Is it cost effective? I assume not. Yolo, I bring it anyways

During deployment we start at opposite ends of our side

We accidentally start the battle early; we have not consolidated our forces

The barbarians deploy about 2/3 of their forces opposite me with a blocking force against my teammate

My unsupported legionnaires are being overrun by the barbarian hordes

My teammate is bulldozing through the blocking force opposing him and rushing to my aid

Can I survive long enough?

I decide to commit my reserve - the praetorians - to sacrifice their lives for time

PRAETORIANS, HOLD THE LINE AS LONG AS NECESSARY!

The praetorians are having none of this

They singlehandedly stabilize my line

By the end of the battle over 900 of my 1500 men will be dead. Many others will have retreated

Only 4 of 80 praetorians will die

The literal last act of the battle was the infantry praetorians chasing down a mounted barbarian warlord and chopping him up

I mouse over their status before the battle ends - they have been fighting about 2/3 of the battle, and charging up and down the field. Most of my other units are badly mauled, have low morale, and are exhausted

“eager, warmed up, motivated by presence of general”

ROMA VICTOR

10/10 would slaughter barbarians for the glory of rome again

The best Total War out of the 10 in the series.
Biased in this being my favorite time period.
But the engine, soundtrack, style and Voice acting are top-tier

Warning: This game doesn't seem to run well on newer computers. I have a gtx 970 and an i5 4690k, and I get about 20-30 fps in battles and on the batlte map.

I was really tempted to refund the game when I found this out, but I decided to keep playing. The game actually became really fun. I've watched prince of macedon play this game for a long time, so it was fun to finally get to experience it myself. Also, after a few hours, I got quite used to the lag. I don't really mind it anymore, and the game is very enjoyable. Definiately worth the price and it was a great experience.

Rome Total War Is perhaps the best 10 bucks I have ever spent. I have been playing total war since I was eight, and Rome is to date my favorite game of all time. I would recomend this to any strategy lover, and to anyone dissopointed in Rome II and Atilla. Its graphics have aged suprisingly well, and are in some ways more visualy appealing in battles compared with its sequal. 10/10

Rome total war is a very fun interactive game for anyone as long as you don't mind the outdated graphics, but be warned there are some computers (including mine) that can not handle playing the campaign, the lag is real. If you don't care about the campaign you can most likly still play multiplayer and custom battles, assuming you can't fix the campaign lag.
