NOTE: Because the Kingdoms expansion uses core game elements from the Medieval II: Total War game, it is required that you use the same method for purchasing Kingdoms as you did in purchasing Medieval II: Total War. Im new to total war i have only had this game for about 4 weeks and i have few problems with the game. I love this game, but the one thing that ruins the game is the stupid AI, i can win seige battles outnumberd 3 to 1 because the AI charges in one choke point, and the AI don't leave big garrisons of troops to defend their citys, even their capitals. the combat is perfect and realistic, battles are sluggish, and they don't end as fast as in other total wars. some factions are better then others like France and England, some are mediocre like poland, which is not a really popular faction or the paple states. campaign is fun and somewhat difficult, but again the AI ruins it. the time period itself makes the best expeirence so far bringing me right into the world, you get to live the life of a medieval knight, or a king leading his army into battle as you take citys, and defend you're own . i give this game a 8.5/10

If you do not have this game in your library then I don't know what are you doing here. This is one of the best games hands down. Everything is great in this game. You get to control a nation and lead it's people to glory. You can have children in the game and use them as charactors when they hit 16 years of age. You can go on a quest to take over the world. Everybody should have this game.

Played for thousands of hours since release on a non steam version.

This game is from 2006 and is better in everything than Rome 2, Attila and not to mention the piece of ♥♥♥♥ Warhammer than just recently came out.

Second best Total War after Shogun 2. Don't buy the new ♥♥♥♥ stick to the old.

The total war franchise has always been known for its realistic and accurate historical backgrounds.
Medieval 2 is no exception and is possibly the best game of the series, with the exception of the newly released Warhammer. Although the graphics are not mind-blowing(expected as this is an old game), the experience is truly great.
The AI works well enough so that even early on,you can't just throw everything at the walls and see what sticks.
In my opinion what makes it better than Attila or Rome is the fact that not only did those have severe bugs and crashes, the system requirements were pretty unrealistic and very few people actually were happy with it or enjoyed them.
Last, but definitely not least, the modding community is alive and vibrant.
I CANNOT stress this enough, the mods make this game such a joy to play, whether it is the Third Age Total War Lord of The Rings modification which is fabulous or the stainless steel mod which improves the overall play.
Neither the Rome or Attila games have any mods that come near these.
If u can get Warhammer and run it on your PC well, great but otherwise, this is probably the second best game in the series.

As far as total war games go this is easily the second best in my opinion, The campaign map and interface is the best in the series and the battles are really fun, he only problem that this game has is that it didnt innovate of Rome total war and is more of a reskin with little extra features. It is however still a masterpiece of strategy gaming 9/10

I have been playing Total War games since a very long time, however my favorite is still Medieval (2), hopefully there'll be a 3rd in the future... Best hybrid game, turn based for multi-city/armies management as any good-strategic-game, but also real time battles (optional) which gives that "Battlefield 1942" feeling to it. On the pro side, I'm able to play this on an iMac without parallels/win.. :)

Total War: Warhammer just came out huh?
Total war: Medieval 2 Warhammer End times just came out as well, all you need is M2TW and Kingdoms, and now you have the entire Warhammer world, instead of just a small patch of it.
Perhaps your not into Warhammer? How about Lord of the Rings? Want to play as the orcs of morder, and bring back the one ring and see what happens?
Perhaps you want to just relive the medieval times as a loyal Crusader, or warmongering Jihadist?
Then Medieval 2: Total war is what you want.

The modding community for this game is INSANE! There are mods which allow you to improve upon the base campaign significantly, to completely overhauling the game. This is something no other Total war in the franchise has nearly achieved. This game's modding community can beat anything CA puts out, the new Medieval 2: Warhammer End times mod that came out roughly around the same time Total War Warhammer came out, proves this.

Buy this game. NOW. (Be sure to buy Kingdoms!)

The BEST total war followed by Rome 1, Hands down. I put hundreds of hours into this game and Shogun 1, Shogun 2, Rome 1, and Medieval 1, mostly on disk versions before Steam. These games contains my some of my fondest childhood video gaming memories. Medieval 2 in particular was always special to me. The multiple unit textures, the setting, visual armor upgrades, new world conquest, mods it all was great!

PROS
+Great soundtrack, it really lends to the battles
+End of Dark Ages to early Renaissance time period
+Great battle system
+Awesome/funny in game movies
+Beautiful 3D tactical map
+Lots of building depth
+Roughly 20 factions
+Invasions
+Crusades/Jihads
+New world exploration
+Many units and unique units. New unit types unlock as years progress and some become outdated.
+Multiple textures for units, gone are the days of units filled with clones
+VIsible unit and settlement upgrades (on battlefield, armor/castle/wall upgrades)
+Realistically paced battles that allow you to plan your battles with tactics, so even if you are outnumbered say 1000-3000, you can still win if you take up a good defense (a hill) and perform flanking maneuvers all while pouring arrow hell down on the enemy. Battles don't last 10 minutes like in Shogun, so you have to make sure you have time for a battle!
+Available mods. Too many to name... I usually play Stainless Steel or Custom Campaign. Also, don't like every turn taking up 2 years? Change one line of code in the games notepad code to get 2 turns per year for 400+ turns!!
+Tons of cities to take
+Royal Lineage
+Diverse battle maps (generate from where you are on 3D tactical map)
+Kingdoms Expansion (Essential for some mods)

NEUTRAL
=The diplomacy isn't the greatest thing, heck, the newer Total Wars are probably worse, but it gets the job done for a game that is 10 years old.
=Trade, which can net you tons of extra income if used, is like a reworked version of the assassin mechanic
=Rebels could have had more depth, or even became new countries that would expand

CONS
-AI can be lacking. You can tweak the ai with mods though. Otherwise pump the battle AI to Very hard and put campaign AI to Hard, this will give you a good challenge without mods.
-The AI can sometimes spam massive amounts of units within a short amount of time, even if they have one city. Probably to compensate for AI being dumb at times.
-Repetitive seige maps
-A couple of silly units (Sherwood archers....). Some mods get rid of them and make the game more realistic.
-No faction reemergences, like they had in Medieval 1, so when a faction is gone, its gone. This makes late game a slugging match between a few factions, instead of multiple factions duking it out still (Like in real life, Knights of Honor or Crusader Kings)
-Bridge battles are kind of one sided, towards you. The AI has a tendency to rush into small places sometimes, getting slaughtered in the process.

Overall Medieval 2 Total War is one of the best in the series and you'll have loads of fun charging cavalry into exposed infantry, seeing knights hack each other to pieces and unloading into Aztecs with gunpowder all while being enamored by the glorious soundtrack! This is just to name a few moments out of the hundreds that this game will give you. If you call your self an Strategy gamer and haven't played this game, you've missed out on a classic!

Great fun, I've played hundreds of hours on a disk copy years ago.

Worth it in todays day and age, with more modern games? Probably not. Might need a few mods for graphics and stuff before it's worth playing (2006 graphics are old).

It's fun, I think I got it in a humble bundle or on sale at least.

Really a fantastic game. Great replay value.

Pros:
Runs smoothly on most computers.
Great economic system.
Awesome battles and detailed units. (for the time)
A large variety of factions and cultures to choose from.
The DLC campaigns are well made and worth it. (in my opinion)
Rarely has frame rate drops. (unless there is a massive battle involving more than 8k entities)

Cons:
The AI frequently bugs out during sieges.
Occasionally crashes at the end of a turn. (DLC campaigns only though)
Lack of depth late game with horde factions just turning up with 10 stacks of cannon elephants. (unfair, in my opinion. lol)
Diplomacy can be a little tricky and slow to develope.
The popes call crusades at the worst times. (lol)

All in all, a great game and one of my all time favorites.

I've been playing Medieval II Total War since it's launch in 2006. It was the first game in the Total War series to introduce texture diversity within the troops of a single unit. It remains one of my favorite strategy games, mainly for it's easy to mod game engine, which sparked many high quality mods such as "The Long Road", "La Guerre de Cent Ans - The Hundred Years War" and "For King or Country: The English Civil War".

i only hope one day we will get a game as good as this one again.

Medieval 2 is one of the most amazing games i have ever played:
It is a prime example of the golden age of videogames when the developers made games with passion, and CARED about making good games... and it really shows. the graphics, the gameplay, the sound, the music, the jokes, the speeches and even the million different traits your characters can have, this game is is my #1 medieval strategy game of all time.

Hey there, I'm gonna assume you're deciding about if you should buy this game. So uh...

Well, here's a quick summary-

1: It's obviously similar to many games made by Creative Assembly.
2: It's somewhat "cheap" compared to other games
3: Better AI than Total War: Rome II (as many others would say)
4: Not split into little DLC peices
5: This game is still active in multiplayer, years after it's release!

My opinion: It is basically Total War: Rome II, but better and it is worth it's price, including the DLC. So if you're thinking about buying this, I will say yes. But this is just my opinion, so you could choose if you would like to buy this or not. Anyways, have a nice day and I hope I've helped you make your decision today!

To start off, you should probably buy this game. I say probably, because $20 is a little pricey, but if its on sale for $10 or under get it! It is a great strategy game with two main modes. The campaign map is like an overall strategy game where you try to conquer the world, and the tactical battles are individual battles where you control an army. Although the graphics are outdated, the strategy in this game is priceless. Played a game as Portugal, and first killed Spain. Then fought and made peace with France, then went south and killed the Moors, then kept going east and killed sicily, kept going and am currently about to kill Egypt. I also conquered Rome from Sicily and returned it to the pope, who became my bestie for all of 2 turns until he died. The next pope hated me, but at the moment I am not excommunicated.

And so,
If you read it through this far you probably should buy the game.
Just do it.

This game hooked me up for SOOOOO many hours I lost count. I have played more than 500 hours on the physical version. And still come back to it nowadays on steam.
It has some great mods and mod potential.

If you are a Tolkien fan theres Middle Earth Total War MOD which is pretty awesome.
If you want to play vanilla tho it offers pretty good campaigns and the Kingdoms offer a lot more factions diveristy you could ask for... All that for a very low price. Really recomended on the total war Series.

This game is absolutely amazing. The tactics and strategy are extremely simple, making it less difficult. Some factions are obviously ridiculously powerful with more starting regions, better units and technology, but it is still an absolutely amazing game. I've played as the Holy Roman Empire, France, England, Russia, and Spain, and they're all extremely fun and they all deserve a 10/10. Incredible modding capabilities, too. Definitely worth it, especially if you get it on a good sale.

This is my first Total War game so I really don't have much background to this series. But as a gamer, all I could say is this game is really enjoyable. Very fun strategy game and a very good start to the series in my opinion. This game definitely convinced me enough to try out more Total War games. What I am trying to say is, you should buy this game.
