Tietoja pelistä

Kate Walker, a young ambitious lawyer from New York, is handed what seems a fairly straight forward assignment - a quick stopover to handle the sale of an old automaton factory hidden in the alpine valleys, then straight back home to the US.

Little did she imagine when embarking on this task that her life would be turned upside down. On her expedition across Europe, traveling from Western Europe to the far reaches of Eastern Russia, she encounters a host of incredible characters and locations in her attempt to track down Hans, the genius inventor - the final key to unlock the mystery of Syberia. Her voyage across land and time throws all she values into question, while the deal she sets out to sign turns into a pact with destiny.

Oh man, this is a really nostalgic game for me.

During my 12th birthday, my aunt came to visit me from Portugal and brought with her a couple of gifts, but one in particular was the 'special' gift for my birthday. At the time I had been bugging the ♥♥♥♥ out of my parents to buy me Battlefield 1942 and I was damn sure that that is what my 'special' gift was.

I could barely sleep the night before knowing that Im going to be playing BF1942. The day comes and when I vehemently tore the wrapping paper apart, Battlefield 1942 was not to be seen. In its place I see 'Syberia'...

What the f*** is this? Syberia? Benoit Sokal? ..Is this a book or something?

She told me that she heard I liked computer games so she bought me that before coming to America. I thanked her but deep inside an unearthly rage started to boil. I didn't even play it for a couple days because of how disappointed I was.

It wasn't until I had to stay home from school because of a really bad flu that I installed it and gave it a bash.

The story, the animations, graphics, art, and theme instantly grabbed me. The sound design was the first thing I noticed when I became instantly immersed with the pattering of rain on the window pane and the soles of your shoes walking along hardwood floors of the inn.

The puzzles arn't that complex but really solidify the theme of automatons and cogs and gears of machines. I'm currently playing through it again and its such a nostalgia trip which makes it hard to recommend since I already knew what I was getting into. However, I have no problems saying this is my favorite point and click and one of my favorite games of all time.

Make yourself some tea, wrap yourself in a warm blanket and enjoy every moment of this atmospheric masterpiece.

Steampunk style point-and-click with really nice graphics (just remember it was made in 2002) and fantastic voice acting (one of best I've ever heard in an adventure game).

Village mysteries, steampunk factories, amazing airships and intricate automatons - all this explored by young New York lawyer, Kate Walker.

"Syberia" has some shortcomings, namely some annoying unskippable animations (like stair or ladder climbing) and it is quite linear, but the story is so great I would definitely recommend it anyway!

I could tell you, that this is one of the most beautiful point&click games I have ever played, but I will not. I could tell you that this story is one of those which will haunt you long after you finish the game, but I will not. I am not forcing my oppinion on anyone but if you are a fan of pont and click adventure games, most likely you have played this title... but if you did not... SIT DOWN RIGHT NOW AND START THE GAME. You are in for one of the most memorable rides of this genre. There is a mature story with great storytelling, nice puzzles, and a long trip to... realising someone's dream, which becomes your dream by the time you reach your destination. It's one of the most reccomended game of it's genre

Syberia takes "casual" to the extreme
I hate to say that I wouldn't recommend Syberia, because there are aspects of it that I really loved, and the amount of good reviews it has gotten has made it one of the few games I considered buying at full price (although luckily I snagged it and Syberia II on sale) but overall Syberia's gameplay takes most of the enjoyment from the game, takes it outside, and beats it relentlessly with a baseball bat.

I have about 9 hours listed for playing Syberia, but I'd say only ~4 hours of that was actual gameplay, and the rest was simply clicking furiously at the edges of endless screens trying to make Kate Walker run through pointless scenery until I could get to the actual objective. I've played plenty of adventure games with click-based movement before, but what makes Syberia comparable in enjoyment to a lobotomy is that for at least the first half of the game 95% of the rooms and screens you run across have no objects, objectives, or point whatsoever except to look pretty, and you're left having to run across giant maps with maybe 3 useful rooms in them altogether, all of which are spread out.

Oh and here's the solution to every other puzzle: You need a key. Chances are it's nearby. If you don't need a key then prepare for some moderate-yet-annoying pixelhunting, and running through every room 3 times because you got everything right but now there's an extra little something you need to do that seems to have no point other than to add another 30+ minutes of "gameplay" to Syberia.

I will say the story is interesting enough. It could've been more in-depth but that would've cut into Kate's marathon time I'm sure. I liked listening to Kate's phonecalls as a side-story. The art -as pointless as it was at times - was very well done and pretty especially considering when the game originially came out. And I really did love all the characters within the game, as the majority seem very well thought out.

Syberia is pretty, interesting, and it sure does seem like a classic adventure. But the long dragging gameplay will eventually have even the most casual point-and-click gamer feeling more like they're just doing a chore.
