Why Early Access?

“We have been working on The Great Whale Road for over a year now, and we don’t want to complete the game without your feedback. Early Access will be an epic adventure and we hope that you will enjoy it as much as we will. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we have the core mechanics in place and a team of artists and developers on board who are rowing hard towards the ambitious goals we have for The Great Whale Road.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are planning to be in Early Access for 5-6 months and release The Great Whale Road in the winter. This is based on our project roadmap and includes new features as well as additional content. We will provide regular updates on our development blog at http://www.the-great-whale-road.com/ and on the Steam forum.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full release will add a lot of content, additional features and enhancements including:

  • The complete Danish story.
  • More character storylines.
  • Playable storylines for other cultures: Franks and Frisians.
  • A smarter and harder AI.
  • Character progression and ship upgrades.
  • More content: characters, warcries, missions, rumours and events.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is playable and you can start to follow the story of one settlement and lead their struggle to survive and prosper despite living in the Dark Ages. There will be bugs and there are areas of the game we want to polish during Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will increase either towards the end or after Early Access. We want to ensure that early adopters are incentivized, and stay with us to provide continuous feedback as Early Access progresses. We are planning to participate in Steam sales as they are important for small studios like us, but we will keep discounts reasonable.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Great Whale Road is our debut title as a studio, so your inputs will help to keep us on course. Sometimes we will get things wrong, and for that we are apologizing upfront. We will always listen to what you have to say and are looking forward to your feedback on the Steam discussions forum. We can’t promise that every request or suggestion will be implemented, but we will review and consider each one. If they fit into our vision of the game and can be added to our roadmap then we will do our utmost to include them.”

Outlook and Price Update!



Hello Everyone!

We are working hard on the last major update with character progression, new combat AI, management screen improvements, the ability to sell equipment at the blacksmith, a trade quest or two, and as always tweaks & fixes.

Full Release
We can confirm that we will be releasing this quarter, and we will post an announcement when we have locked in the exact date.

The Frankish and Frisian storylines are ready, and we are working hard to fill any art gaps we still have for these two. After next week's update our developers will have to upgrade the Unity version, add the remaining minor features, cloud saves, and last but not least implement Steam Achievements.

We have many other cultures and storylines on our wishlist - Picts, Northumbrians, Bretons, West Saxons, Mercians, Britons - to name just a few. It will depend on you, the players, if we will be able to tell their stories in The Great Whale Road.

Upcoming Price Increase
As we are getting closer to the full release we will be increasing the price of the game this Friday, the 20th of January. So this your chance to get The Great Whale Road at the early access price.

The Yuletide Patch: v0.5.1 Fixes and Balancing


Hi Everyone!

While working towards adding player progression to the game, we gathered all of your feedback on the new combat system and prepared a patch for the holidays. We increased the length of the battles in v0.5.0 as we expected the AI to behave as planned, but it was not ready in time. For now we’ve reduced the amount of enemies that you fight against, and the AI won’t be adding extra reinforcements past the middle of combat. This is subject to change once heroes are able to rank up and become more powerful.

We also made a couple of fixes, so if you encounter any problems, please do visit our forum’s support section.

Highlights:
  • Added new visual feedback to battles, such as previewing the player’s attack range, which enemy is playing, who they are attacking, and more.
  • Reduced groups of enemies and balanced some battle events.
  • AI now starts with most of their warriors already placed in battle.
  • Loot screen after battle now pauses the sailing scenes.
  • Fixed turn duration on warcries that target enemies.
  • Fixed a bug that would block players from adding heroes to the battlefield.
  • Fixed a bug where hits wouldn't target health points after depleting defence points during the same attack.
  • Fixed a bug where the AI would try to play one of its dead warriors and wouldn't end its turn.
  • Fixed Hunting results.
  • Fixed a bug where equipment from newly unlocked heroes wouldn't be flagged as "equipped".

About This Game

The Great Whale Road is a story-driven RPG set in the Early Middle Ages. Travel through an ancient world, sailing along the North Sea and battling foes in turn-based combat. Interactive historical fiction comes to life through its digitally hand-drawn art, colourful characters, atmospheric soundtrack, and deeply researched lore.

Fight, trade and discover the story of your village and its heroes. Are you worthy to lead them to renown and riches?

Gameplay is split into two seasons. Winter to manage and plan for the year ahead and summer when you sail the whale road and visit other towns and villages. You and your warband have to fulfill a quest each year, while ensuring that you have sufficient food to feed everyone through the long months of winter. Digitally hand-drawn locations are connected by an atmospheric side-scrolling sailing mode. Grid based tactical combat means that Valhalla can be just a warcry away.
