What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have been working on The Great Whale Road for over a year now, and we don’t want to complete the game without your feedback. Early Access will be an epic adventure and we hope that you will enjoy it as much as we will. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we have the core mechanics in place and a team of artists and developers on board who are rowing hard towards the ambitious goals we have for The Great Whale Road.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are planning to be in Early Access for 5-6 months and release The Great Whale Road in the winter. This is based on our project roadmap and includes new features as well as additional content. We will provide regular updates on our development blog at http://www.the-great-whale-road.com/ and on the Steam forum.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full release will add a lot of content, additional features and enhancements including:

  • The complete Danish story.
  • More character storylines.
  • Playable storylines for other cultures: Franks and Frisians.
  • A smarter and harder AI.
  • Character progression and ship upgrades.
  • More content: characters, warcries, missions, rumours and events.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is playable and you can start to follow the story of one settlement and lead their struggle to survive and prosper despite living in the Dark Ages. There will be bugs and there are areas of the game we want to polish during Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will increase either towards the end or after Early Access. We want to ensure that early adopters are incentivized, and stay with us to provide continuous feedback as Early Access progresses. We are planning to participate in Steam sales as they are important for small studios like us, but we will keep discounts reasonable.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Great Whale Road is our debut title as a studio, so your inputs will help to keep us on course. Sometimes we will get things wrong, and for that we are apologizing upfront. We will always listen to what you have to say and are looking forward to your feedback on the Steam discussions forum. We can’t promise that every request or suggestion will be implemented, but we will review and consider each one. If they fit into our vision of the game and can be added to our roadmap then we will do our utmost to include them.”

Release Ahead: March 30th, 2017

Hello Everyone,

The Great Whale Road is getting ready for the next leg of its journey. We have been working on the game's concept since the beginning of 2015, and the first artists and developers joined the team in April that year. We weathered the odd storm or two and entered the Sea of Early Access eight months ago.

It has been an exciting few months and we are super grateful for the community's help and feedback. We are implementing some smaller features which we had postponed until now into the game and are busy polishing the rougher edges.

We have decided to leave Early Access on the 30th of March - this will include the full story of the Danes and all features we have been adding since 0.6.2. Among them a new combat camera, more warcries, development area upgrades, an enhanced ship upgrade system, new journal screen, trade screen enhancements, AI improvements and more. And yes, the game will be steamified, too! Enjoy the new release trailer.

In addition to English The Great Whale Road will be available in German, Spanish, and we hope Italian as well. The French version is a bit behind schedule, but we think we will have it ready for the first free update - fittingly the Frankish storyline in early May. We will post a few more updates over the coming week.

The storylines for the Franks and Frisians are written and translated, but we don't have the resources to test them in parallel with the Danes. Thus we give you the Danes first. We hope that this will also help us in view of the changes on Steam - you'll have noticed that the front page and game visibility have changed a lot over the last months.

After the Frisian storyline has been released at the beginning of June, we would love to add more storylines. Time will tell, and we will let you know before the summer if we get close to the targets we need to achieve to be able to do more work on The Great Whale Road.

Thank you!

Update v0.6.2: Bug Hunting

Hello Everyone!

We have re-released patch v0.6.2, which slipped out the door last night. There were some small visual errors remaining that we had solved already.

One issue that still eludes us is the loading freeze that some players occasionaly experience after sea battles. We are working on it, but we haven't been able to reproduce it on the PCs at the studio.

If you experience any other issue, please share it in our forum’s support section.

Key Fixes:
  • Hunting dogs now increase both minimum and maximum food you can get from hunting.
  • Fixed armour not being properly swapped between characters.
  • Fixed a double click bug that would cause a character to attack twice in a row.
  • Fixed Winiwaldaham hunting icon opening the tavern.
  • Fixed side-effect icons in the combat.
  • Fixed combat info not staying visible after ending a turn.
  • Fixed several savegame issues.

Check out the full change log on the community forums.

About This Game

The Great Whale Road is a story-driven RPG set in the Early Middle Ages. Travel through an ancient world, sailing along the North Sea and battling foes in turn-based combat. Interactive historical fiction comes to life through its digitally hand-drawn art, colourful characters, atmospheric soundtrack, and deeply researched lore.

Fight, trade and discover the story of your village and its heroes. Are you worthy to lead them to renown and riches?

Gameplay is split into two seasons. Winter to manage and plan for the year ahead and summer when you sail the whale road and visit other towns and villages. You and your warband have to fulfill a quest each year, while ensuring that you have sufficient food to feed everyone through the long months of winter. Digitally hand-drawn locations are connected by an atmospheric side-scrolling sailing mode. Grid based tactical combat means that Valhalla can be just a warcry away.

  • Playable storyline for the Danes from Úlfarrsted, a village on a small North Sea island just off the coast from the Danish-Saxon borderland.
  • Chapter 1 and 2 of a story-driven campaign along the Danish, Saxon, Frisian and Frankish coast.
  • Character missions for your chosen warriors.
  • Four combat classes and associated warcry cards.
  • Land and sea combat environments.
  • Equip your characters with weapons and armour sets.
  • A dynamic event system which covers all areas of medieval life from farming to family feuds.
  • Mac and Linux versions.
  • An enhanced trade system.
  • Character afflictions.

  • Chapters 3 and 4 of the Danish story.
  • More character quests.
  • Playable storylines for other cultures: Franks and Frisians.
  • A smarter and harder AI.
  • Character progression and ship upgrades.
  • More content: characters, warcries, missions, rumours and events.
