Chrome has potential. It has nice graphics, large open space areas to run or drive around in, interesting ideas, and a pretty good premise. However, it falls so far short in it's execution.
The biggest problem is the stupid AI with their unbelievable level of accuracy. Even with using cover, you could find yourself a bullet-sponge because they are so damn accurate. Meanwhile, I've been a mere few yards from enemies and had all of my shots miss. To call it frustrating is an understatement. In fact, the best way I've found to deal with the enemies is grenades. However, grenades are glitchy - sometimes you'll go to throw one and it simply won't leave your hand.
Then there is the designed-to-be-useless inventory system which doesn't allow you more than two firearms, which wouldn't be such an issue if combat encounters weren't such crap (much easier to pick guys off from a distance with sniper rifle than engage them in close combat).
The gun recoil is high. High tech future where intergalactic spaceships are cheap enough for the average joe to afford, but gun technology has not advanced an iota. Stationary, kneeling, and keeping a steady aim doesn't prevent wild recoil. Best thing to do is shoot in bursts, but that's an issue in most fights because of how quickly enemies can fill you full of holes.
The health of your character is an easy thing to manage on the first mission where there is abundant health packs, but in the next mission they are scarce, which is problematic given the number of enemies. Health packs are the only way I've found to "heal" so far.
The voice acting is pretty bad. Not terrible, but the sort where when people are talking you're reminded that yes, this in fact a video game. Your own character sounds like a cross between Duke Nukem and the guy who narrates 'Honest Movie Trailers'. Some of the things they say are cringe-worthy. I'm not sure if this is bad dialogue writing or simply a bad translation (Polish developer). However, the biggest issue is really that there is little in the way of character to identify with. The better FPS games out there find some way to tap into an emotional investment with other characters. In Half-Life and Half-Life 2 the NPCs speak to you like you're a person living in their world, like you're a part of their community, which makes pressing forward, even when it's difficult, a worthwhile endeavour. The same can be said of Deus Ex and Halo. They engendered an investment in the game that is lacking here.
The bugs in the game are often surprising. I was in the middle of a gun fight up on the upper levels of the complex in the first mission when I went to kneel behind cover and fell through the floor to the ground below and died. Later I just cleared a room of enemies and my character called "clear" so that the unarmed NPC waiting behind me could move forward - as soon as "clear" was called another enemy popped up and killed me. Later you're both on an elevator and when the doors open to the roof you tell her to run and she is immediately shot dead by an enemy pretty far away.
The level of difficulty for the prologue ("tutorial" mission) was just out there. The game doesn't really care to help you learn the ropes or ease you into the game by ramping up the difficulty as you play. Early in the mission you are told to take out a sniper in his tower. I died so many times trying to figure out how to approach the tower. Really, taking out the sniper was more luck than skill, because as I've mentioned before - their accuracy is perfect and yours is crap. Did I mention there is no "run", no "sprint" and no "dodge" button? Yea, so while you jaunt over to the nearest rock you just have to pray the sniper has to stop at some point to reload.
I want to like this game and I almost do. Can't really recommend it for the casual FPS player, but I can see where stauncher FPS players may enjoy it, though they should know going in that it feels generic.
