What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Guardians of Ember is the newest title from Runewaker, the developer behind Runes of Magic and Dragon's Prophet. Although the game is almost feature complete, we are still working on the English localization (now mostly finalizing Act 5), bug fixes and smaller balancing and polishing tasks. Instead of waiting for the complete localization we want to use the Early Access phase to gather feedback from the community by releasing Act 1 & 2 first (Act 3 was released during Christmas and Act 4 recently).”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect that GoE will be in Early Access between 6 to 8 months. At the moment it is planned to release new major content on a monthly basis so that the release version will have the full content ready and polished. Act 5 in May. We are also working on new PvP options as well as harder difficulty in Dungeons and a "wave"-based challenge mode during Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Beside the localization issues (and the fact that we would like to provide a German and French version as soon as possible) the major difference is content wise as we plan to implement Act 5 incl. the related territories, dungeons, character levels and items as well as the 6th class and several new features and modes.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“As a previous version of the game had a beta in Asia before the majority of the features is already implemented (including but not limited to crafting, guild system, PVP, message system, randomized dungeons). From our own player perspective the current state is a very good open beta, but we need to fix several bugs and also don't want to go commercial without the full content! However, our servers did not have a stress test yet and they were initially located in Germany only with US servers added recently. We will provide local servers after launch based on player population and necessity.

We are working hard to improve the game but please only buy this product if you want to support the development and accept that the product quality is not final yet (and has bugs).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“While the final pricing has not been decided yet, beside the fact that Early Access buyers have our eternal gratitude they also benefit from their early decision due to the several ingame bonus items and benefits that we put into the different packages.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“In the last couple of years our team worked with several online games and the most valuable source for the right direction of a product was ALWAYS the community.

This means:
We are happy to get your ideas and to discuss these!
Yes, it is not always possible to make all of the ideas real and we might refuse some of them, but we listen and want to deliver a great experience with your help!”

Development Update!

We have been unusually quiet since the last development update and we have not released any new content or features for a while. The reason is simple: After multiple reports of crashes, the dev team doubled down on fixing them, pushing most other tasks to the side. While we apologize for the lack of new things, the good news is that the team succeeded: crashes have been reduced by 90% and we will continue to fix the remaining ones (please continue to send us your crash reports with as much detail as possible).

The PM and CM teams at Insel Games have not been idle, however, and have thoroughly tested the Horde Mode, tweaking it heavily. We have also tested out our new Event Tool and last but not least, we conducted a survey which shed a light on what is most important: The opinion of our community, and what is important to everyone.

Now that Runewaker is again working on features and content, I would like to take the chance and share our updated roadmap as well as other ideas on what is coming to GoE in the coming weeks and months.

General direction
When reading through reviews, messages, and the survey, it became clear that GoE is somewhat between player expectations: The Single Player crowd feels the game does not play fast and fluent enough to be an ARPG and MMO fans complain about the lack of social gameplay early on. While both audiences are important to us, and GoE will always be a mix of both Genres, we have to face the technical limitation that this is a server-based game and less reliant on instances which makes it hard to really “speed up” gameplay.. Thus, we have decided to strengthen the MMO aspect.

While many of you have been talking about the lack of “endgame” content (and we have some things planned for that), we currently feel that it is the “early” and “mid game” that need our attention more. Thus we will work on opening MMO aspects such as crafting and PvP earlier while strengthening group play.

Lastly, you have told us that you don’t like the current Loot Orb system because of the randomness and because you feel that after buying the game you are charged again. While we still believe the current system is fair, allowing anyone to obtain Loot Orbs through playing, we will change the system to a more traditional approach that relies on fixed content within editions and direct purchases of (cosmetic) items in the shop. Loot Orbs will not go away, mind you, but they will be tied to level-ups similar to a certain big game from a certain big game company.

Short term (June/July)

  • We hope to release the brand-new Horde Mode within the next few weeks (still some bugs left as I am writing these lines) but are happy it has improved a lot during this time. The key point is that instead of making it a high level feature, players will be able to join from as low as level 10. While there still will be a difference, certain character stats such as HP, DMG, and Armor will be buffed to max level. Also, the Horde Mode now unlocks achievements and grants Honor Points which can be exchanged at special vendors for unique items.
  • Similar to the Horde Mode above, we are planning to introduce this level buff system for Unranked PvP so more matches will happen even with smaller population. However this will require more testing on our end.
  • Crafting will be available from Level 15
  • The current system for group XP distribution will be changed by modifying the levels of aggro for certain classes (which determines the XP distribution), making group play more interesting and more fair. We are currently testing this to find the right balance.
  • Due to popular demand we are now in the process of developing a Dungeon Group finder which we hope to release in July.
  • The Guild Skill System will be released in July.
  • The German localization of Acts 3+4 is almost done, Act 5 expected in July
  • The Spanish UI and Skills are almost done, starting with Acts 1+2 soon
  • The French UI and Skills are being prepared with a full localization planned after that
  • TBD: Group Play in Iron Hero Mode

Mid-Term (until fall)
Apart from new content - Act 6 and so on - the mid-term goals are set towards endgame content, of which we are currently planning the following:
  • Hardcore Difficulty for Dungeons, together with new Loot and new Item Rarity
  • Ranked PvP
  • The “Endless Tower” which will allow for challenge stages, again with unique items
We opened up a thread for more “endgame” ideas and would love to discuss them with you! Find it here:

The following things are on our list but do not have an ETA yet:
  • Native Gamepad support
  • Further platforms and stores
  • Further languages
  • New PvP Modes and Maps
  • Auction House
  • Additional Skill Slots

Please bear in mind that the things above and the dates are subject to change as we encounter other issues or receive community feedback! So let us know what you think :-)

Thank you for your support!
Your GoE Team

The future of Olyndale lies on your shoulders. It is your fate - and your duty - to retrieve the magic stone and bring back peace to Olyndale.

Choose from six different classes and extend your skill set by selecting a secondary class after reaching level 15. A variety of 58 different regions with over 60 randomized and challenging dungeons await, where you battle against monsters, mortals and the living dead during your crusade to retrieve the Ember.

Developed by the hardcore gamers of Runewaker (the team behind Runes of Magic and Dragon's Prophet), Guardians of Ember combines Hack'n'Slash and traditional MMORPG with a focus on action oriented combat in PVE and PVP as well as near endless character optimization.

- Full 3D MMORPG with Hack'n'Slash Combat System
- near unlimited character optimization: 5 races and 6 classes with over 300 of active and passive skills
