How we created our mind-bending Tarot Cards with 3D scenes inside of them

When viewed from the front, each of the Tarot Cards in Kismet appears to have a fully rendered, animated 3D scene inside of it. However, if you turn the card or move your head around it, it appears to be as thin as paper. Want to know how we did it?

We've posted a full write-up on our website for you to check out, with lots of images from the making-of process. Here's a quick preview for you, then head to our website for the rest:

The original painting of "Death":

"Death," cut into pieces: (Also pictured: the "Fool" card)

"Death," animated:

How we did it:
The cards are not strictly any one size. They are actually in a constant state of transformation that allows them to maintain the appearance that you see inside the experience.

Each card in the game knows where the player is looking. The card compares the player’s location to its own, as well as to its relative rotation. Using that information, the card calculates something called a Dot Product.

The Dot Product drives a constantly updating physical transformation of the cards themselves. If a player is looking at a Tarot Card straight on, the card stretches to its maximum depth, making it look more 3D. As the card turns to it's side, or the player moves their head around it, the Dot Product shrinks, as does the stretching. The more the player looks at the card on its side, the flatter the card becomes. Up until it's as thin as a piece of paper.
The calculation happens to every card, on every frame, ninety frames a second.

About This Game

Would you like to know what the future holds in store for you? Put on your Oculus Rift or HTC Vive headset and take part in a first-of-its-kind VR experience: Kismet. Developed by award-winning creative studio Psyop, Kismet is a collection of three activities, including a past-present-future Tarot Card reading (“The Cards”), daily Astrology session (“The Stars”), and ancient boardgame Ur (“A Game of Wit”).

Powered by a deck of 22 hand-painted Tarot cards and an accurate real-time map of the solar system, Kismet is meant to be experienced daily, with unique outcomes every calendar day that are directly tied to not only the cards that you choose, but your individual birth date and the actual alignment of celestial bodies at the time of your reading. Seated across a table from an enchanted automaton with the power to look into the future, you’ll be transported to a place where magic is real. Named after the mysterious character at its core, Kismet is inspired by the mystic arts of tarot and astrology, brought to life in a beautifully detailed, handmade, Gothic style.

Seated Position & Controls:

  • Attention HTC Vive Users: Because Kismet is a sitting experience in a room scale environment, we recommend that you find a comfortable place to sit down and then reset your seated position at that point. To do that on the Vive, push the bottom button on your motion controller to bring up the Steam menu, aim at the Settings cog at the bottom of the menu, pull the trigger, and select "Reset Seated Position" from the General VR Settings menu. After that, you can move your head around to inspect the details of the environment and take advantage of positional audio within the experience.
  • Attention Oculus Rift Users: Kismet is available in two versions, one for Vive and one for Rift. To launch the Rift version, you need to find the game in your Library, right click it, and launch it in the "Other VR" mode (as opposed to Vive mode). If you accidentally launch Vive mode, such as through an icon created during the game's Steam installation process, the game will be unable to find your Xbox controller.
  • Kismet is designed to work with each individual headset's bundled controllers. On Vive it is compatible with motion control, on Rift it is compatible with Microsoft Xbox One gamepad.
  • Kismet has multiple graphics quality settings which are bound to the keyboard. The Lowest quality setting is mapped to the "1" key, Medium is set to "2", and the High graphics setting is mapped to "3". Kismet's default render quality is set to "2" Medium, and will run on minimum specification hardware. If your machine is more powerful than minimum specifications, try bumping up to the next rendering level!

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7
    • Processor: intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
    • Storage: 6 GB available space

Beautiful! Just a beautiful looking game that makes great use of VR technology. Kismet is wonderfully voice acted and the art direction is top notch. I wasn't sure what i was in for when i bought this game but i like tarot readings and the price was cheap so i risked it. I love the VR experience here and I'm thankful that I gave this a chance,

Cute, pretty and polished, but limited.

I enjoyed the animations of getting my fortune told, but as I don't believe in this kind of thing, I'm not going to play this more than once. The board game gives this some longevity, but as you are somewhat at the mercy of dice rolls once you get towards the end of the game again, it doesn't have a lot of replay value.

Still overall, I will recommend this as, for the right crowd, it could be quite fun to pull out at parties and take turns having your fortune read.

Very well done, beautiful graphics, nice to see a simple concept be thrown into VR so well and immersively
Of course if you're not into this kind of thing you won't enjoy it, but I certainly do.
There is a roomscale issue right now which I've written to them about , which for me is the only thing hurting this program right now. Otherwise... this is a great little VR room, which I like to do late at night once i'm done with all my other VR gaming to unwind before bed :)

One of the best experiences on the Vive. I go back in frequently to discover what the cards and stars have to say. Great to demo to people.

Honestly I've only played with this a little, and it's been largely ignored since then. I had expected that you would get a new astrological reading daily, but when it appeared that wasn't the case, the game fell by the wayside. Hopefully the devs add more content. That said, I still recommend it because it is so well polished and nicely put together. It's quant and good for demoing.

excellent concept, terrible value - tarot card readings last about 15 seconds, and the horoscope was only slightly better with like a 1-2 sentence blurb... if you're not interested in the minigames you'll be done within 2 minutes.

the fortunes are so weak since there's no questions for you to answer or any other way to feel like the experience was customized, and the explanation of the cards and their meanings are virtually nonexistent.

this was after being frustrated by having to figure out how the controls worked for like 20 minutes, if you're on the rift you need to right click the game in your library and launch it in "other vr" mode.

basically some of the highest production values out there for VR; incredible card art, characters, animation, lighting and environments. worth checking out as a tech demo even if you aren't into tarot.

I plan on coming back frequently for my daily readings...

You might not believe in astrology or tarot cards, but who doesn't enjoy a bit of mystic mumbo-jumbo really ?

Kismet is basically an interaction with an ethereal gypsy fortune teller. She will read your horoscope or your tarot. You can also play some traditional board games with her. It is a relaxing and meditative experience. You won't put many hours into it, but you may come back to it from time to time for a bit of spiritual guidance.

I really quite liked this as a virtual experience. It delves you into a different place and it is very well put together. It is a short experience but quite well done, it is definitely on the list that I would show to people who wanted to see VR. It takes advantage of the medium really quite well. The only thing I would change is what is outside the cart windows everything else is so beautiful it seems out of place.

If you like your fortune being told then this game is for you. The enviroments it sends you to for each activity are really well made, especially the enviroment for astrology, I can see myself using this again espically for showing off VR. Loved the cat!

Really incredible game, very polished. It's a tad short, but not a big deal for the low price. This will be something you show everyone when they try the Vive. Even the credits screen is great.
