"This is a fun game, with similar gameplay to the previous two, but it can get damned puzzly at times, which might frustrate some. "

About This Game

Large-scale battles have become a vestige of the past, depleting resources of conflicting parties. Settled space, where welfare and order had reigned, has become a cemetery for dead ships which is flooded with pirates and adventurists. Complete impunity, black market flourishing where gun and tech trade is on the move, arbitrariness and anarchy – the Galaxy has become a real dangerous place. Events in the Universe and its habitant’s destiny are completely up to player’s choice and tactical decisions.
Star Wolves 3: Civil War is a sequel to the popular real time strategy with RPG elements. Original large-scale scenario, closely tied with the first part of intergalactic epic helps the player influence the ongoing events and foreordain one of many endings. Free roam, free mission selection, free team forming – the world of Star Wolves waits for its heroes.
  • Huge world: 110 highly detailed star systems in different parts of the Galaxy.
  • Non-linear story: several endings and additional quests create a complete game universe.
  • New characters and skills: form up a team of your dream; teach your companions new skills.
  • New participant in the intergalactic conflict: the Space Fleet of a New Empire, equipped with its own spaceships.
  • A number of new base ships and fighters with unique specifications and original weapon types and equipment.

This game has a very rough learning curve but It's so worth it. It has multiple endings and they are actualy different and worth finding. There are totaly brutal battles, if you don't like dying over and over again dont bother but if you like a challenge this game could be a new favorite.

Played SW:1 - really liked it.
Played SW:2 - a bit...did not enjoy it.
Played SW:3 - really liked it.

SW:3 is rough around the edges. Laughable conversations and grammatical errors but who cares. The game is about doing some missions, blasting pirates and upgrading your weapons and systems.

Some of the missions verge on impossible. I play on normal difficulty.

I thought the graphics were good. Bugs were minimal.

Save often. Keep your missile bays full.

8/10

Well, I played through this game and had a lot of fun, and a lot of frustration. There were times when I was excited and times when I was bored.

Pros:
  • The story is not the best I have read so far, but it keeps you on track, which is good (see con #2) It also let's you pick different solutions for missions, but not in every case (see con#3).
  • Ships can be equiped with a variety of different weapons, missiles, add-ons. I spend a good amount of time in the equipement screen to adjust my loadout to the upcoming missions.
  • Charakters can learn new abilities. From certain attack moves to maneuvers, from calling reinforcements to disabling enemy shield there are a lot of possible combinations.

Cons
  • The game assumes you have played a star wolves game before. That's why you really should use the tutorial. It tells you how to use waypoints and that is one heck of an important thing to know! But it does not tell you everything, and that's a pity. Wonder how you can assign points to perks? No information given (dock all fighters and dock at a station).
  • If you'd like an open world game: you're wrong here. The world opens after a few missions, but unfortunately there is pretty much nothing much to do than to hunt pirates. No random missions, nothing.
  • The scripting is my major con. In the first missions you need to do exactly what you are told to. Want to fly to another sector than told? Watch a cutscene where your ship is destroyed. Fly to a station you are not supposed to fly to? Watch another cutscene... The world opens after a while but until then it really can be a pain. And later in the story one of your crew members leaves. With the current ship and equipement you handpicked and were lucky to find. Later a ship of your crew member exlodes, which is part of the story, but you think, they were hit by a missile or something and start that situation over and over. Until you realize, it's a script...

Can I recommend buying the game anyway? Yes, now that you've been warned about some parts. If you have played the two others and had fun, you will like this very likely.

In one word, Star Wolves 3 was a disappointment.
Full disclosure, I went into the game not knowing what specific sub-genre of space simulation Star Wolves was, but I have a soft spot for anything space themed and that love spans many genres.
After booting the game, I was immediately both enamored and jarred by the graphical fidelity of the game. Many would say it was dreadful, but it immediately reminded me of my first time launching Freelancer way back in the early 2000’s. I maxed out the graphics, got my settings all nice and balanced and started up a new single player campaign. Immediately I was struck with a wall of text followed by an absolutely chaotic character creation screen. Again, in a way this was almost charming, I loved plenty of titles with worse openings than this. After putting together my character I was treated to a Freelancer-esque cutscene which did the job visually, gave very little in the way of context or plot creation. Next thing I knew I was sitting in space. That was it. After figuring out how to work the camera, I looked around only to see a huge asteroid sitting off in the distance. 15 minutes and a consultation with the control settings menu later I figured out how to move the ship, so I do. I travel about 10 feet “forward” and a huge fleet jumps in and some guy is threatening me over the radio. Next thing I know, he opens fire and I’m space debris with the very first volley. Game over. I’m taken back to the start screen.
I honestly don’t remember the last time a game has made me sit back in my chair and say aloud “Excuse me?”
I don’t like judging games by first impressions, I would have missed out on innumerable gems by doing so, but Star Wolves 3 has nothing to offer me that would redeem such a first impression.

Like almost all of 1C's game, this game features unpatched bugs, a horrible and laggy user interface, and just plain bad game design. Definitely not recommended.

For me, it's a funny game, but not so good at gaming experience.
I have been attracted by the space opera RPG and strategic games, and Star Wolves 3 is perfect combined product. I was very happy that I don't need to operate the space ship by myself like the other space simulating games, because I'm not so good at action and simulate games. The SW3 space strategic game, It makes you to choose your targets, weapons and teammates, then they'll attack your enemy automatically. There are many kinds of ships and weapons for you to trade and discovery, that part brought me many fun.
But when I was following the story line to defeat enemy, suddenly the game was ended! I have traveled just only 1/10 of stars of SW3! The game were not so free for you to explore the whole world as I thought. Not so many kinds available missions for a sand box game. It really a DEFECT. I hope there will be a better SW4.

Has BG/ BG2 pause system , but in space! Mothership acts as floating base for up to 6 fighters. ♥♥♥♥loads of tech and pilot RPG elements. Kinda buggy save alot, lots of text so you may have to read, short story. As a saving grace it has a huge solor system with lots of factions and infighting.

I've always loved space and anything to do with it. Games like Endless Space and Sins of a Solar Empire have occupied lots of my time with such replayable gameplay.

If you like spaceship adventuring and being a captain of your own mothership, then you will probably enjoy this game.

The aesthetics are good, the music and sounds match the atmosphere and are nothing too crazy. The voice acting and cutscenes are below average, but do not take away from the game too much. Some of the cutscenes also do not appear to be skippable, which is slightly annoying to me since I can read faster than the text stays on screen. The story seems to be decent, with lots of factions vying for control in the Star Wolves universe.

The controls may be difficult if you aren't used to this type of gameplay, however, experimentation and practice with what each button does will help familiarize yourself with fairly quickly. The learning curve is moderate to difficult - especially considering that there is no in-game tutorial. It is strongly recommended that you first check out the tutorial missions before jumping into the main game. You can die very, very fast in this game. Save often just in case.

Gameplay can be sped up to 8x normal speed, and you probably will be using that option a lot during your travels. You can select 1 of 4 classes to start with, each with its own specialized skill/perk tree.

In the beginning of the game, you are constantly presented with numerous decisions, which I found to be very nice for open-world style gameplay. There are a variety of ship parts and weapons to select from. The galaxy map is very, very large and expansive, allowing for a lot of exploration.

There is a lot to do in this game, and you can even dock fighters inside your mothership.

If you really enjoy spacefaring and space combat, check out this game.

Recommend.

<-Lotrek on the 1C forums. If you know me then you know how I feel and can stop here.

Love this game, got it when it came to steam as a buy this and get the first 2 free and enjoyed every one for different reasons. The gameplay is 3d isometric like Homeworld. The VA is so terribad it's good. The story has multiple endings so there is replay value in that. OVerall a fun romp that I have spent more hours than I care to mention playing. Reccomended.

There was a 4th game planned but never released sadly, maybe a wild kickstarter will appear.

If you liked freelancer, you probably will like this one also. Personally I think this one is better than freelancer. Not just about the graphics, but the whole game including game mechanism and everything. The game play is very similar to freelancer, except you wander around with a 'mothership' instead of just one vessel. The mothership can release up to 6 fighters in battle as long as you got enough pilots. Thus the control is different from freelancer too, it is more like EVE type rather than freelancer's 3rd person space shooter.

You can replace your mothership and fighters with more powerful onces, or upgrade them with powerful weapons/modules. There is a good varience of different weapons in game. Unlike some games where different series of weapones just differ in names, the weapons in this game are quite different from each other in practice while still being quite balanced. You actually have to consider using different fighter/setup against different enemy or to match up pilot specialty. And yeah, there is also a skill tree system where you can choose which battle style you would like to go with. Each pilot's skill tree is a little different while the protagonist can select from 4 quite different skill trees in the beginning.

And the storyline was rich and vivid, too.

The only complaint I have about this game is that you can not 'free play' as in freelancer after story ends. Although there is a period of time before the end where you can go anywhere and do anything you want.

BTW, it is not an easy game and might make you frustrated in the very first few missions as I was. But once I figured it out, I started enjoying the game.

9/10 One of my favorite.

I found this game to be incredibly addictive. imagine FTL, but in a 3-D form, and with the option to just roam around the galaxy at whim. there are a few things, like pathing not being completely optimal, but i only really encountered that in the huge fleet battles at the end of the game (no spoilers there, it was always gonna happen). basically, if you like flying ships around in space, blowing up pirates with missiles and lasers and plasma, then this game will give you a good few hours of that, and the campaign missions are just generally fun. a warning, the intro is slow, you start off with an unarmed ship and you basically get bullied through the first entire sector, but that gives you time to get to grips with the game and towards later game you can go toe-to-toe with just about anything, so your revenge will come!

Great game, customisable pilots, fighter ships, and mothership, plenty of explosions, and a large universe if you want to go wandering. 10/10

Fine space RPG/strategy. Advantages: nice combat mechanics with Dragon Age-style active pause; highly customisable ships; decent story. Disadvantages: apart from several choises, game is very linear; ending is somewhat disappointing, the story doesn't look finished.
I played original Russian version, so I don't know about quality of English translation and voice acting. Russian voice acting is good.
Conclusion: just another game about space combat. Buy it if it's on sale.

This game is my all times favourite, it is worth it ,but you have to be patient before you get the big guns! Not like most poeople that just say "ah this ship sucks , it cant shoot , I dont have money" etc, its a RPG RTS game , one of a kind , had potential in ashes of victory , it died.I hope the haters are happy now.Anyway the game is awesome since recently I saw that there was a guide , which to be honest I didnt know alot of thing that were in it. :D

All I can say is, if you liked the original Star Wolves and were as disappointed with SW2 as most other players, do give SW3: Civil War a try. The quality is back where it needs to be, along with several new features, such as improved character skill trees, new equipment, more ships and a new storyline that branches off into one of several different endings, depending on your choices.
Fans of SW1 should seriously buy this game, makes for several dozen hours of mostly fun gameplay.

Linear RPG space game, not much depth or dificult options to be made. Possible 5 routes to be taken at mid game which won't have impact on the gameplay at all.

A game to played in older systems and oK purchase under 5€.
