What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're launching Mystic Melee in Early Access because we're continuing to add spells, characters, and levels. The game is both a single-player platformer and a multiplayer platform-fighter, built on a system of unique magic abilities in a physics-based world. As we expand and fine-tune these mechanics, we want to hear from the players.

From balance suggestions and campaign feedback to fresh ideas for abilities and characters, we want your help to make Mystic Melee perfect!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The full release is planned to be ready in about 6 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're working on the following for the full version:

  • Additional single-player campaign levels and bosses
  • More spells and characters
  • Custom map editor and Steam workshop integration
  • Improvements to mechanics and abilities based on your input!

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access release has four-person multiplayer with both online and local play, plus half of the planned single-player campaign. Specifically, you'll find:

  • 4 multiplayer modes: Deathmatch, Hypersphere (basketball with spells!), Obelisks (king of the hill), Blitz (tournament mode)
  • 30 single-player challenge levels across three worlds
  • Single-player Leaderboards with ghosts to watch and compete with yourself and others
  • 30 multiplayer maps
  • 12 powerful spells and four characters with their own abilities
  • Bots to play against solo in the multiplayer modes or to fill out games with friends

We feel the game is stable and polished in single-player/local play. We want to note that online play is still in beta and won't be a perfect experience yet especially if there is high latency between players. Still, we think it's a blast to play and want to collect feedback on how to keep improving it.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, we do not plan to price the game differently after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll post frequent updates in response to discussion here on the Steam community forums. We want to work with you on:

  • Balancing the spells and characters
  • Suggestions for new abilities and levels
  • Improving the online experience
  • Fixing rare bugs or hardware related issues

We've shown Mystic Melee at lots of events and found the mechanics and spells have really inspired players to get invested in the game and provide feedback. We look forward to working with the Steam community to make the game better than ever!”

Mystic Melee @ PAX West!

Hello! Mystic Melee is in the Indie Megabooth area at PAX West! Find it in the Serenity Forge booth, 755 :)

On the development side of things, there's a new feature that really ups the ante in FFA deathmatch: Powerups! These special powers spawn at Arcane Altars. The player who nabs them gains a great advantage, like flying, triple damage, megaheal, and more to come!

Here's an example. With Megaheal, don't even care about taking damage!

In addition, I've been working on a system to help people get into online matches in a more automated way. That and the timing of some events have pushed back the release, but we're on track right now for the release later this month!

Mystic Melee is at EVO 2017, and dev update!

Check out and play the game today and tomorrow in between your matches! We're in the MIX indie game showcase area.

On the development side of things, I've added an often requested combat feature: Dodging!

You can now use the shoulder buttons to dodge left or right at any time. It gives you I-frames where you can pass through any attacks unharmed, and can be canceled into your own attacks. It's also useful just for moving around and controlling your momentum.

In addition to that, the online joiner and lobbies have been the main focus recently. Nothing visually exciting to show there yet!

Thanks for reading.

About This Game

Mystic Melee brings you a spectacular mix of physics-based platforming and imaginative spells. You'll need to master both, playing as four arcane wizards facing the monsters and minions of an evil sorcerer who threatens the universe.

Featuring

  • SINGLE PLAYER campaign to hone your platforming and spellcasting skills, with leaderboards and recorded ghosts to race against.
  • MULTIPLAYER battles with four players locally or online.
  • Unique elemental spells that reward strategy and skill. Crush, slice, and incinerate your opponents with summoned rock golems, whirling leaf attacks, and volcanic strikes.
  • Fluid physics-based platforming that's easy to learn and hard to master. Wall-jump, slide, and dash to outmaneuver enemies and complete challenges.
  • Four multiplayer game types, including objective-based modes that have you controlling artifacts or scoring on an enemy goal, rewarding mastery of both combat and platforming.
