I haven't been able to complete this game or touch its expansion due to time constraints, but every time I get on this game I lose entire nights to it.
I'm a big fan of Hack and Slashes, ever since I first touched my friend's copy of Gauntlet on the Gamecube. My few hours I got to spend with my college buds on Diablo II were some of the best that semester. Magicka remains on my top 10 of games this last decade.
I am also a REALLY big fan of Mythology...not kidding, when I found out that most schools didn't teach it I was heartbroken and felt sad for them, because I was lucky enough to get that amazing taste of Mythology due to my schooling. The "Big Three," Greeks Egyptians and Vikings, were really good favorites of mine, but in today's world I particularly love Egyptian Mythology (in no small part due to living there) so when I found out that this game didn't JUST have accurate Greek mythical creatures to fight, I was stoked. Definitely going to finish this.
Out of the box, here are the pros and cons!
+Historical and Mythological Accuracy; harpies are bad guys, satyrs hate your guts, the undead are clad in bronze armor, and the like
+Diverse locals; Greece, Crete, Egypt, most of the Mediterranean is covered in this game, and more!
+HARDCORE boss fights; if you aren't prepared and have looked up some of the details on these bosses beforehand, you will get your butt kicked a lot...and in a good way, forcing you to change your tactics you like to use for other critters
+Loot; this is probably the best loot I've seen in any game, though I'm sure this is a normal thing for Hack and Slashes. It's nice knowing that I have a ready supply of gold I can farm and go back to by getting weapons I don't need for my class and selling them at a merchant
+Class Customization; The fact that they managed to implement traditional class systems in a way that makes sense to the lore by means of class customization is the best aspect of this game. I'm currently playing a hunter with defense and never before have I appreciated the use of a bow more in a game where my primary purpose is to be a tanky melee fighter.
-It's a bit dated...not so much to prevent fun replayability, but just enough to catch your attention. An HD glossover of this game would be an amazing addition
-Lacking in character customization; Changing your shirt color and skin/hair color, pretty much it...kind of sad, especially since I wanted to look like either a Spartan or a Thracian in appearance.
- Class system kind of wonks out in historical accuracy; I chose hunter and defense so I could be a hoplite, my favorite historical troop choice in any Greek-themed game, and I hold my spear overhead as if I'm going to throw it...kind of a turnoff
All in all, I give this game an 8.5/10, and I will DEFINITELY update this review when I finally finish it.
