About This Content

THE ALLAYI

When the Endless first came to Auriga they did not find an empty planet, but one teeming with life -- some of it intelligent. The Guardians, caretakers of the planets, were one sentient species; another were their helpers and comrades, the Allayi.

The Allayi were broken and scattered by the Endless, and for centuries they have survived on the fringes of existence. Handing their traditions and stories down in the form of a religious text, the Epistles, and a book of prayer, the Euchologion, they have been waiting in the snows and the shadows until Auriga once again needs them. And it seems that this time has come...

The Allayi are a people so closely aligned to Auriga that their very nature changes as the Dark Seasons occur. While they are friendly and defensive in summer, when the harsh winters arrive they become aggressive and dangerous, reflecting the madness of the planet. They are tied so closely to Auriga's fate that even their bodies alter to match the evolution of these extreme seasons.

Growing strong once again the Allayi have returned, prepared to defend and preserve Mother Auriga with all their grim strength.

NEW HEROES & UNITS

Deeply connected to the moods of Auriga, the Allayi change their appearance and abilities as the seasons change.
This attunement allows them to know precisely when seasons are changing, and see the Pearl’s location even hidden in the fog of war.

Seeker

Like cavalry, the Seeker strikes rapidly from a distance with a powerful charge. In summer the charge has a greater attack; in winter it removes the enemy's defense.

Skyfin

Arguably the most revered and majestic being on Auriga, the Skyfin's presence improves friendly morale in summer and decreases enemy morale in winter.

Monk

Powerful and hard-striking, the Monk unit's skill with its long blade results in powerful counters in summer and powerful attacks in winter.

WINTER IS CHANGING

With ‘Shifters’ we have entirely revamped the Winter system by introducing a whole new layer of gameplay. Winter is changing!

New winter effects

Winters are never going to be the same anymore thanks to numerous new effects that even impact the Adventure map! Frozen lakes, rivers and coastlines can now be crossed on foot providing new strategic opportunities for your Empire, and its enemies…

Pearls of Auriga

A pure outgrowth of Auriga, they distill the living essence of the planet. Both powerful and beautiful, the Pearls can be put to many wondrous purposes.

Altar of Auriga

The Altar of Auriga is a sacred building to those who live upon her. It is a center of ancient power from the times even before the Endless. By bringing her Pearls here and unlocking the Altar's Blessings, powerful magical effects can be applied to a city, region, or empire.
With the Altar, Empires can also use the collected Pearls to influence which effects will be applied to the next Winter cycle.

New buildings
Besides the Altar of Auriga, you can now build beautiful new districts that stand out in your cities and boost resources extraction and stockpiling. Pearls can also be used to build defense towers on the Adventure map that act as a defensive shield for your city, striking those who would come and do ill to your empire.

NEW ITEMS

Pearls are powerful, but also strange, fragile, and easily marred. To craft with them requires a high level of skill and great humility.
Powerful new items can now be crafted with Pearls such as the ‘Cuirass of the Snows’ that mitigates Winter’s negative effects, or the ‘Band of Auriga’s Chosen’ which allows troops to move faster on frozen grounds.

I would barely have to explain to recommend this expansion to anyone its just that good.

so the main elements of this DLC
- new faction "the allayi"
- a 2 huge additions to any winter gameplay

the new faction is probaly the most intresting faction i have ever seen in a 4x game. they have this seasonal shifting mechanic which makes them defensive during summer and aggresive raiders during the winter.

the winter mechanic is based around the ability to choose the effect of each winter but every faction has some say in this so some diplomacy is required to be able to control the winter effect.

the second winter mechanicis an altar that you can use to buy new buildings and passive effects that greatly give benefits to your cities and even the ability to damage enemy armies inside your regions.

And similair to how the forgotten were better at spying and raiding in the shadows expansion, the allayi are better at winter gameplay than the other factions.

this is the expansion you really should buy because there is nothing wrong with it it just gives benefits that you have direct to semi-direct control over during the game and it makes the winters way more enjoyable.

I enjoy almost everything about Endless Legend. That said, Shifters puts the "almost" in that last sentence. It offers a new faction and little else. The Allayi faction, a building, a small handful of leader items and pearls, a maps worth of regenerating collectables for endless tedium. My heart already sinks when I research the tech that "allows" all previously searched ruins to be searched again. It's just not fun.

It's worth $5, not $10. The new "pearl" mechanic is more annoying than rewarding. There is more than enough ruin running in this game so that you don't need another "collect this" mechanic. It's not full on garbage collection like the shards in DA:I but it's boring and tedious nonetheless.

The new faction, the Allayi are cool; however their success depends on rampant pearl collection and therefore unsustainable in my EL universe. I'm pulling the plug on Shifters. The time has come for EL to grow into EL2. They've done all they can for this classic. It's time for a new engine and facelift.

I very much love this expansion. The extra survivability during winter with pearls is a great mechanic addition to the game. At first when the expansion was released it was super hard to get decent amounts of pearls for some reason, it's been fixed since and pearls are more plentiful making it easier to use it. It however means for anyone who can't get enough is utterly boned until next Winter as certain upgrades/districts can seriously make your empire better during winter. Effectively making Winter a flourishing joy than a disheartened sigh. It can make the Cultists a super powerhouse with their Holy City and getting those special districts to level 3. To which this certain District being the Winter Borough.

Seriously, save your pearls and unlock Winter Borough, build it in every city and try to upgrade it to at least 2. You won't be sorry.

The new Faction the Allayi is a very nice addition to which obviously gets the most out of the Pearls and Winter. But I like how Winter isn't a insta win for these guys because everyone else can get most of the same benefits later on. The Allayi Faction level upgrades has a nice array of defensive and offensive abilities, allowing you to run away like a coward without injuries and doing additional damage depending on how much damage the enemy has already received before. A Allayi hero amongst the Ardent Mages would be a nice combo. The added traits that came with this expansion also makes Customs more powerful; with the exception of the new biggest negative trait We Chosen Few (-20).

Is the expansion essential? Maybe not, but it certainly adds a lot more to the experience to make it more enjoyable during the seasons that wrecks everyone unless you had the Winter Shelters. I like this expansion a lot!

I've got about 6 games under my belt. 1 of them on impossible. Only 1 win so far. The Allayi are extremely overpowered during winter, especially Monks who cycle through 1, 2, then 3 simultaneous hits with a 20% attack boost each time. The problem is getting to the late game where each sucessive winter is longer. Allayi heros are NOT good governors but excel at fighting. You're somewhat stuck using only Allayi units, otherwise mixing units causes a severe slowdown in movement points in the winter. Pearls really cause you to explore the map which is nice. Since pearls spawn in the ocean you'll find yourself traversing the ocean more. The only thing that remains is an expansion or patch that implements fighting on water and this game will be complete. A race that creates islands on sea tiles to go with it would be perfect.

This DLC is great but what I really love is what it has done to winter. In all my playthroughs, winter was always extremely aggravating. It always took the fun out of exploring for me, not to mention the hit to my cities. Winter with the Allayi is so fun! As an Allayi, you get vision and movement bonuses during winter, plus your fighting specs go way up! And you are constantly encouraged to go out exploring so you can pick up the new pearls as they regenerate with each winter. That is a lot more fun than just sitting in your city until the winter blows over.

Even more fun is when I can sneak into other empire's borders with my invisible army (my compliments to the ghost force skill item creators) and steal everyone else's pearls, because you know... I'm evil ;)

The Allayi are a fantastic new addition. For you EL players who love the lore, if you were ever digging through the factions looking for the moral high-ground, this new faction has it.

I'll avoid too many spoilers, but it seems that the Endless are not the whole story surrounding Auriga. We've always known she had her own identity, and it turns out the Allayi are her chosen ones.

When an expansion for Endless Legends comes out, I'm like a sugar-starved child in front of a jar of cookies : I pick it up and munch on its content, no questions asked.
So please, do not consider this evil red thumb as a definite "avoid this content" sign, and I shall explain why.

The DLC can be broken down to two major additions : the new game mechanic (the Pearls) and the faction taking the most advantage of it, the Allayi.
Firstly, the pearls. New nodes of pearls appear after the beginning of each winter, awaiting to be gathered (if you steal pearls in another civilization's territory, as expected, they will really not like it- and in diplomatic exchanges, they value the pearls quite a bit too much. 1000 dust for ONE pearl ? No deal, man !).
Pearls have three functions :
1) Once you have constructed the Altar of Auriga, you can "pray" by spending pearls to choose one of three effects to be applied during the next winter. The choice with the most "prayers" will be active. A nice little tweak, possibly favouring yourselve and hampering the others !
2) You can unlock "blessings" by spending pearls- in other words, extra techs and buildings. On paper, more possibilities is neat. Ingame, what you can unlock probably won't make much of a difference. Accessories and armors made of pearls ? Quite weak, except maybe early game, and then only the Allayi shall gather enough pearls at this point in time. No vision penalty for buildings during winter ? Marginal bonus. The new towers providing "retalation effects" when ennemy armies attack on your territory ? Doesn't slow down a serious invasion. While they are on or two great innovations (like the building giving +10 industry on river tiles during winter), generally speaking, it doesn't motivate to pick pearls.
3) Linked to the blessings, some buildings and equipement need pearls to be made.

Now, for the Allayi. Quite a curious race, they are. For the bad part, they have 150% expansion disapproval and need 100% more food to go up a level in population. The catch ? Their units move normally during winter (when they shift form and are more combat-able) and possess high movement capability, they know exactly when winter begin and how long it will last, they know where pearls are on the map even without vision of them.
Plus, the very first part of their quest grant them the God of scouts : the skyfin. The skyfin has 8 moves, flies (no movement penalty due to land) and robs ruins of their content like it's nobody's business. Plus Allayi can find pearls in ruins !
Skyfins are fantastic, no doubt, allowing you to quickly map your surroundings and gather many goodies from ruins across Auriga.
Lastly, they have a special form of borough granting more bonuses, but needing pearls to be built, so, of course, they need loads of them.

Are they bad ? Nope. Even with said penalties, you can make them powerful, and in opposition to all other races, winter is the best time for them to go to war. I would even favor them over the Forgotten.
Now then, why the red thumb ? Well, as Redvolver said in his own review : " I feel it's absolutely optional ", a statement I agree with, but not to the same conclusion. Being optional is really not a problem. Being absolutely so is a bit sad.
Now, it's just my point of view (obviously) but I find that an expansion should bring something more substantial.
The problem is that the Pearl mechanic can be totally disregarded if you do not play as the Allayi. Its impact is just not significant enough.
" Well, sir, if you perceive it that way, just don't bother with it ! " you could say.
Yes, but, well, no. It's really bizarre for me to see that Amplitude made a brillant DLC (Guardians) adding several layers of depth to the game, and then see Shifters (with a higher price !) being so non consequential.

In fine, it is not a bad DLC per se, but I'm taken aback to see so many people writing that it's fairly priced. But I might be biased- I consider many DLC to be overpriced, and thankfully, Amplitude is not in that habit. Yes, I'm glaring at you, Paradox, Stardock...

Dont really ever review dlc but coming from Endless Legend which is always an automatic buy for me I know I wont be dissapointed. Like most of the others this one features some interesting new gameplay mechanics, more specifically for the included faction and while I did Enjoy Shadows a bit more, this one is still well worth it if you enjoy playing EL.

Great DLC, New faction, New resource, new buildings, new mechanics. This DLC has it all. Honestly the Allayi are one of my favorite factions now. They can change stances during summer and winter for different effects so they can fight different ways, they can ''take'' resources with their skyfin. Just when it is over top a resource. They added the Pearls. They can be used for buildings, weapons, armor, items, blessings, and prayers. The prayers make it where you can try to get the effects of winter changed which is really good. You can unlock the blessings to access the new buildings and equiptment it brings. But the items you make with pearls are not that good except early game in my opinion. Due to them mainly giving you increased movement and vision in winter and not really much stats in the late game.

Is Shifters worth it?

Short answer is yes; it's worth the money.

Now for the longer answer:

Whilst Shifters doesn't any new aspect that feels so encompassing as Espionage, in itself (which I've never really used, by the way), it's when you look at the wide array of stuff in the update together, that it becomes worth it.

The Allayi is a fantastic faction, with well balanced traits. At first they might seem like they'll be getting a slow start, with severely reduced growth.
And they do. So I recommend going for Seed Storage before anything else, maybe Public Library or Mill Foundry if your starting area is less than average in these aspects (but only less than average!).

The thing is, whilst they might not grow as fast (and I'm playing right now, with a single city with 7 pop, whilst my neighbours, the Roving Clans and the Forgotten, both have 4), they got other tricks up their sleeve. And no, this faction is not for everyone.
They get a Skyfin almost instantly (which is amazing, as it can just fly around, discover the map, whilst collecting Ruins, unharmed) and in the meanwhile you'll be walking around with your hero and your starter army (WITH your hero), because he basically has nothing for cities, whilst giving your units both Movement, Vision, and Pathfinder.

Early game, spam Ruins. Take everything. Explore everything. They also start with Shipyards, FYI. What you'll be getting from this more than makes up for your slow growth. I might have far less cities than my neighbours, that's partly a conscient choice because of preference, but also because I can still keep up overall, and even beat the others (militarily, wonder-wise, technologically, and so on). Basically you always want your Skyfin and your armies running around, gathering ruins and pearls.

So, why am I writing a guide here? Well, that's basically to make sure that people understand that the Allayi is not unbalanced, even if they suffer from lower growth. They're a great addition.

Moreover the game gets some mechanical tweaks and buffs, especially extended winter (NOT timewise, don't worry), with more options and whatnot.

Considering AMPLITUDEs overall Content Policy, their quality, and the fair price for this expansion (and obviously the quality of the expansion itself), I can heartily recommend it.

In short, I feel like the Shifters DLC is definitely worth getting.

First, because the DLC adds a unique new faction. Honestly one the best things Amplitude does for Endless Legend is it's unique factions. They all feel so different and diverse, catering to different playstyles, and the Allayi are a great example of this. Yes, are much more closely tied to Pearls and seasons than other races, but they are balanced well, so it doesn't feel like an annoying dependency at all, in fact they seem to own at both these things. They are also a beautifully designed faction, so they definitely tick the aesthetic box.

Second, a large portion of this DLC focuses around the Winter season, which has always irritated me before in EL. I would cringe and roll my eyes everytime my beautiful empire would be covered in annoying arctic winds and blanketed in production-halting snow. Now Winter feels like it has more strategic options (and it generates valuable pearls), so where before I wanted to shut off winter altogether I've actually found myself looking forward to it. Which is actually odd and will take some getting used to. There are are actually advantages to winter now, and decent ways to get through it easier. Thank you Amplitude for finally addressing it.

All we need now is a DLC that adds new water features / mechanics and a corresponding aqautic / amphibious faction and I can die a happy EL player :D

Review:

The Allayi are the game's most unique faction and probably the most unique faction in a 4X ever. Moth/bat/butterfly samurais with a bi-polar personality? Holy crap.

The added gameplay mechanics bring new life to the once under-utilized Winter mechanics.

The Altar of Auriga is a smart addition that brings new depth to strategic decisions and is another great expansion mechanic. Use the pearls you find during Winter to unlock various bonuses, buildings, new items, and armor.

Hell, the new Winter mechanics in general breathe new life in to EL. Shallow water freezes, allowing strategic movement of armies over water before the ice thaws.

Bottom line: This is the best EL expansion yet and an easy recommendation. Fantastic work, Amplitude!

Disclaimer: I was in their closed beta program (the VIP program) and have played roughly 20-30 hours of this expansion.

Have been playing all night now and i think it is time to give a well deserved thumbs up.

Here is why:

I really felt the AI changed in battle and on the map.
Some examples: I was stealing pearls within the borders of the AI and they really dont like that. First they complain, later they close borders to protect their pearls. It´s really cool.

While i was fighting an enemy army consisting of melee and ranged units, they placed the ranged units behind a choke point on a hill. The melee unit was in front and kinda tried to keep us away. It was a bit too far from the choke point but that tactic has potential to make Archers/AI/Battles great again ;)

The New content feels really refreshing. It gives the Game a nice boost and winter actually serves a purpose now. It really hurts now to be slow and not able to gather pearls as fast as others. It can be quite the advantage to have many pearls. But it doesnt feel unbalanced it is just another way of playing. But what it does to the player is: you have to get out, scout, send fast troops (hello all of a sudden usefull winter cavalryunit) to get pearls and ruins and evade marauding troops. There is stuff to do now and it is actually really fun to race for the pearls.

The AI seems however sometimes a bit suicidal :) Not sure why, but in my current game an equal looking army attacked mine, and failed miserably because my troops had basically really expensive weaponry and equipment and theirs obviously not. I did 3-5 times the dmg. Not sure why, but i guess they still can´t handle upgrading troops properly. Or there is a little glitch in evaluating battle chances. However on other occassions i saw them stacking up troops like crazy to hunt down my pearl hunters :) The AI really seems to be bothered by them...it is rather merciless and tries to get you asap.

Also you can pray now for some stuff that affects winter. So basically you can spend pearls to effect how bad winter is gonna get or what negative/positive thing will happen. All AI/Players can and the more you pray the more likely it is you get what you prayed for. Cool idea, i think in MP this can be quite fun.

Apart from the gazillion bugfixes they also implemented with this release i have to say...big thumbs up. I can only recommend and it is introducing so many refreshing new things it does not feel like a "Rip Off money maker DLC" it is actually a real expansion. WELL DONE AMPLITUDE, WELL DONE!!

For all of the DLC for this game, I've felt that while they add some interesting systems, you could live without them. That changes with Shifters which I feel is a must have. The changes it makes to winter add the most universally useful system out of all the expansions and changes winter from being the worst thing ever to just a different focus of play with the various bonuses that you can get from the alter and the sidegrades (for lack of a better word) that you get from winter starting. The new race is a pretty slow, but they exemplify the new systems by also having varied bonuses during winter and summer. (Note: While my Steam time on game is small, I had played a fair bit of the game at a friend's house so while I'm still fairly newbish, I'm not just talking out of my ♥♥♥, just haven't got the game for myself until this sale)

Of the 3 expansions (Guardians, Shadows, and now Shifters), this is by far my favorite. Guardians added a few interesting ideas, but was ultimately not very impactful, and while I enjoyed the spying system of Shadows, The Forgotten are currently in need of an economic buff. The Shifters DLC has finally added a well balanced faction to the game, along with the added bonus of a unique mechanic. The pearls of Auriga and the freezing of lakes has changed winter from a time of turtling and reduction of losses, to a time where you can harvest a valuable rescource and utilize a new lane of attack. While I personally believe that the Allayi, the new faction, could use a small reduction to their penalties to growth and expansion disapproval, as well as changing their hero from ranged to support, they are an overall well balanced faction with a truly unique play style. They have few cities, low population, and their summer-time abilities leave a little to be desired. But, they are masters at pearl gathering/usage, have the best scout/search unit in the game, and are extremely efficient at blitzkrieg winter stikes. All in all, this is the best expansion yet, and brings some great changes to the game.

Amplitude should give some lessons about DLCs to Paradox.

Is the DLC worth the money?

Yes, absolutely, it implements a new playable Major Faction, a new resource (Pearls) and a new game mechanic related to a feature already in the game: Winter. I feel it's not overpriced at all.

Will the DLC bring new bugs to the game?

Played for 3-4 hours, didn't notice any.

Is the DLC optional or the new mechanics change the game so much that basically is a must have?

I fell that it's absolutely optional: all that the DLC does is expand one of the basic features of the game with the use of the Pearls that is directly linked to the new winter mechanic and add a new playable faction, with it's own rules and playstyle. Unlike some other software house policies (cough cough) the added feature of this DLC won't impact the game in any significant way, so fell free of enjoy the alredy amazing game experience withoud this DLC if you feel like so.

Shifters brings a lot of new stuff to the table, especially regarding winter. I've done a preview a couple of days before release, highlighting the new race and mechanics for those interested:

Endless Legend: Shifters - Preview
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U052BHHQenM

Overall, I'd say this expansion is definitely worth the money. The new race is really interesting (love love LOVE the Skyfin!), and the winter mechanics make winters less monotonous (frozen lakes yay!). If you didn't like EL before, this will not change your mind. If you did like the original game, go for it!

If you enjoy EL, do yourself a favor and get this.

New faction, with a new set of rules (When it comes to the winter season, and finding 'Pearls')

The Skyfin is awesome as it buffs your armies, and travels long distances to easily search ruins.

I have all the DLC and this one stands out as the best one.
