What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Bunker Punks has been in development for over two years and it's time to share the development experience with the players. In a procedurally generated game with a wide variety of content, tuning and balance are extremely difficult in a closed development setting. Early Access gives us the opportunity to finish the game with the input and support of the community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Bunker Punks will be coming out of Early Access before Spring 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The impact of Early Access will help us tune gameplay, add and remove features and make the whole game experience more complete and polished.

There will be more content: improved UI, additional levels, weapons, enemies, in-game items, world objects and playable characters in the final version of the game.

There will also be additional support for Steam features such as achievements, cloud save and trading cards.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Bunker Punks is fully playable. You are able to shoot, loot, build and recruit.

There are multiple playable characters, enemies, weapons and level types. All major areas of the game are functional and accessible. There is still additional content to add, balancing that needs to be done and there might be some bugs hidden deep with in the game. There might also be hardware compatibility bugs.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will stay the same at the end of Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Since the very first days of development in Bunker Punks, player feedback has been vital. The Bunker Punks dev team will be active and available in the Steam forums.”

Bunker Punks Ver. 0.2.2 Release Notes

Bunker Punks Version 0.2.2 is now live.

Additions:
- Difficulty Settings added: Easy, Normal and Hard.
- On Easy mode, enemies do less damage and have lower health.
- Normal mode is unchanged from previous game balance.
- On Hard mode, enemies do more damage.

Changes:
- Number of floors in an enemy bunker has been reduced. There is also a more pronounced jump in difficulty when the player starts a new bunker.
- Amount of Creds in Medium and Large Creds pickups is increased. This is to balance out the loss in Creds from having less floors in a bunker.

- The number of enemies per room in harder levels is increased.

Bug Fixes:
- Multiple small fixes made in the sprint system. Recovery for sprinting now works properly and recovers if you are pressing the sprint button while recovering.
- Hitboxes on the Brute and SpiderWalker were adjusted for more consistent collision detection.
- Fixed a bug where the procedural level generation dug out a corner in a room, creating a non-accessible doorway.
- Fixed a bug where the Assassin’s Sight was being dropped instead of the Doctor’s Mask.

About This Game

Bunker Punks is a roguelike first-person shooter set in a dystopian future. You control a group of revolutionaries, raiding corporate strongholds for supplies, weapons and armor. Customize your bunker, strengthen your gang and overthrow the corporate government.

Features:

CLASSIC FPS GAMEPLAY – Heavily inspired by the classic FPS games of the early 90’s: High-speed-action, circle-strafing and unloading a stream of bullets into enemies.

BUNKER BUILDING – Build and upgrade new rooms in your bunker to buff your punks, improve your economy and enable new abilities. It’s a non-linear skill tree for a wide variety of play styles.

RANDOMLY GENERATED LEVELS – Every level is generated randomly by the game. The layout is different, the enemies are different, the loot is different, even the propaganda posters on the walls are different. You never know what’s around the next corner.

CUSTOMIZATION – Combine loot, character attributes and bunker rooms to customize each character in your Bunker Punk gang

Bunker Punks is a really fun roguelike game about rebels (the Punks) fighting against an authoritarian government. Gameplay consists of attacking bunkers (FPS sections) to acquire gear, credits and tech, then going back to base and using the collected credits to buy new rooms & room upgrades, which will then grant your characters bonuses. When a character dies, he/she gives a permanent bonus to other characters, and when all characters die, it's game over and you're taken to the marketplace, where you can use your collected tech to buy new Punks, gear, weapons, rooms, room upgrades, room slots and character slots.

As the game is currently (July 29th, 2016), version 0.2.1, the game is still lacking in content, as it'd be expected of such an early version. But even then, I still had some good hours of fun with this - 9 hours registered right now, which were needed to unlock everything currently available. If at this current, early development state I was already able to have so much fun, I can only wonder how many hours I'd put into this once the full version is out.

As it'd be expected of an early version of the game, there are a few issues, but only one is worth mentioning right now, which is an issue with enemy hitbox sizes. Sometimes, the aim reticle can be right on top of an enemy, but it still shows up as white (meaning the shot will miss).

However, the dev is active and listening to player feedback, taking note of all issues reported and fixing them ASAP.

Definitely a game worth supporting and recommending. Even as an early access title, I still recommend it at full price.

Bunker Punks is an entertaining FPS Roguelike with small tight levels featuring fast paced gameplay, the RPG elements are rather interesting in which you gather gear which effects your characters armor, damage and speed over the course of a short 30-45 minute run, at the end of your run in which you either die, or win you're awarded with the tech points that you gathered and are able to purchase the ability to gain upgrades or new weapons in future runs, with how short the runs can be i can see this being a rather fun speedrun game that will interest a tonne of people, it has throwbacks to movement and gunplay in dos games of old that i enjoyed growing up (doom / duke3d / quake) and modernised mechanics which make the game feel fresh and new, i can see this being a great game once it's out of early access and i'm sure it'll be worth the price tag of $20 by then.

Pros:
Fast Movement.
Responsive gunplay.
A good random generation system.
The difficulty curve ramps fast but isn't impossible
Easy to sit down and have a quick game between other things (30 min dota queues anyone?)

Negatives:
Some enemy hitboxes are strange
You can line of sight some enemies to the point where they're trivial to deal with
Currently lacks a real sense of progression, the levels end up being similar simply because the same texture set is used throughout the whole game.
Lack of enemy variety

Great concept with high potential - quite fun to play, meanwhile, in Early Access.

Aside from basic polishing and aesthetic improvements, one can not help but wonder what could be added to this game to really make it awesome. In any case, hopefully development does not end with what we see now, but continues and adds in various features and improvements that we never knew we wanted, but are glad (and impressed) that the devs had the vision to implement.

I do recommend this game although it is quite short at the moment, which will hopefully change as the game goes through early access. By my knowledge, i have already finished the game and used tech to unlock all but 2 items, in just the 2 hours i have played. Get this game on sale as i did and it is quite enjoyable, as the gameplay is smooth and varied with limited loot, enemy types, and playable characters

Edit:
There is more content than i originally thought with tech purchases at the merchant, but with so many upgrades and such, the difficulty and enemy variety could consider improvement

What you are making, everything about this game I find an amazing, lovely blend. I support you guys and I really care about your product. Here's what you've done that's great:

-Art style
-Voice acting
-Sound quality
-Game fluidity

Those are great features to have and, overall, are the stuff of the greatest games on the market. Here is what I would like to see:

1) Variations on the modular level design. I've come to appreciate the beauty that this game has to offer, but the modules can be multi-story with ladders and varied in shapes other than cubes.

2) Secret rooms are a hallmark of both roguelikes and classic fps games. This would be a pleasant cherry on top. But that's up to you and only you.

3) Level interactability. You could have some "keycard" mechanic on some of the larger levels.

4) New AI. This is really the biggest turn-off of the game: many of the enemies camp doorways and track you almost immediately, even when the level begins. Here are some of the really frustrating problems that I feel can be easily fixed:

-a) Enemies clip (get stuck) on corners. If this happens in a hallway, then this always works to the disadvantage of the player, no exceptions. The enemy cannot successfully navigate a clear path to the player until the player is within plain sight of the enemy. The player will always take damage from the enemy, and this cannot be countered. Not even explosives can counter this effect as explosive splash does not appear to wrap around corners. Maybe a cooldown for the enemy's pathfinding could alleviate this problem.

-b) Often times the elevator door will open and you will have a room full of robots storm the door with devastating success. The only method that I have found to counter this is to always charge the room at the beginning of a raid, no exceptions.

5) Controller support would be fantastic.

6) It is unclear how the player can store items collected from a raid. Does the player have to finish an entire raid while wearing the accessory? Does she have to finish just one floor with it equiped? Just a small, in-game tip at the bottom-right corner of the start screen would be fabulous.

Thank you, and good luck!

Bunker Punks is an interesting blend of classic FPS mechanics and modern Roguelikes.

Like FPS of old, there is no reload, no regenerating shields, and no iron sights. It's pure run and fun goodness. It even features graphics that is very close to it's inspiration. The enemies, props, and items are all 2D sprites in a 3D world, even the textures are pixelated to match the feel of classic FPSs such as Doom, or Wolfenstein. Of course all of this is presented within a roguelike format. Randomly generated maps, loot, and permadeath is some of it's key features.

I would probably call Bunker Punks a rogue-lite over roguelike because like other rogue-lites, such as Rogue legacy, there will be upgrades that you can unlock that will carry over to the next playthrough. Such as new items that could potentially drop, extra bunkers, or new characters.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple. Run and gun your way through a connected map, looting and shooting your way into riches. Collect cred, and tech to upgrade your bunker, and collect items to upgrade your characters. There will be multiple weapons available to unlock and pick up and even multiple characters to try.

The game plays well enough, but it's not perfect. There are definitely things I'd like to see added or improved on. It's nice the game has variety of characters to play as, but since it's only their base stats that differentiate each other, and since you can customize your load up and pick ups, they all end up playing exactly the same, especially at later parts of a run. I'd also like to see more enemy and environment variations, as of this current review, the RNG does cycle through a lot of the same material over and over again. Another addition I'd really like to see added is secret rooms. Finding secret rooms were some of the best parts of those old FPSs, and it's a shame it's not in Bunker Punks.

Overall Bunker Punks is a well conceived blend of classic FPS with roguelike elements. It's fast paced, challenging, and plays and feels just like it's inspirations. Many of my critiques are fairly minor and easily addressed in future updates, at least let's hope they do.

Pros:
- Very good representation of classic FPS
- The genre blending is handled well
- Fast paced and challenging
- Good upgrade system
- Addictive

Cons:
- Character selection is bland
- More variety in enemies and environment needed
- Needs secret rooms

Bunker Punks is definately one of the better FPS roguelites out there. While at face-value there are some rough edges and room for improvement, it is very addicting. And thats great - because its Early Access!

One thing to make clear that the store page sort of misleads - this is not a base-building game. The 'base-building' elements are simply leveling up your guys (as far as I have seen). There isn't really any management involved. The 'base-building' is another way to implement a skill tree. Its great, just know what you are in for.

Essentially, you can hold two weapons at any given time, and are gun-blazing through randomly generated levels. Harder levels have more floors. After you complete a level, you return to your base to spend the loot to upgrade your guys. There are meta-game upgrades that really adds alot of replayability and keep you coming back. This feels like the best of Doom IMO.

Pros:
+The FPS elements are done really well. Plays really smoothly and is hella fun. They keep it simple with only two weapons, which works very well here.
+Pixel art is a mixed bag here - when its great its great, but some stuff needs further refinement (like walls and redundant posters, among other things).
+Voice acting is good (but, I mean, who cares really - it could have just been left out given there is so little of it).
+Its definately a cool new take on roguelites.
+Music is definately good.
+Its quite addicting!

Cons:
-Having randomly generated levels isn't always a good thing. Yeah it adds 'infinite replayability', but in this case I'd rather have a good handful of crafted levels. They are all boring. Its just boxes connected by crappy hallways that the enemies have a lot of trouble path-finding through.
-Environment needs a bit more detail. A bit more 'character'. Maybe better use of lighting. Everything feels like boxes connected by hallways at the moment.
-The $15 price tag may be a little steep right now, but I definately will keep the game (which says something).

Yeah, I am really enjoying the game, so far. I hope developement and refinement continues at a good rate.

Bunker Punks is the Steam debut for the coolly named Ninja Robot Dinosaur. Shane Neville is an independent video game developer and artist living in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He develops games under Ninja Robot Dinosaur Entertainment. The reason that he named his company this is because his games often feature ninjas, robots and/or dinosaurs. In this instance robots feature heavily.

Bunker Punks is a retro FPS that features roguelike and basebuilding mechanics. The FPS action is an instant reminder of some of the classic FPS games from gaming’s past including the early DOOM and Quake games. However, intelligently designed procedural generation, permadeath and the customization of roguelikes have been incorporated into the game.

Players can expect to find the action to become increasingly difficult due to its frantic high-speed action and enemies that can truly be sponges. I accept that some players don’t appreciate ammo sponges with enemies that require you to unload entire clips on a single enemy but I believe that it is well suited to the game. This ultimately means that players will have to strategize on many of the game’s enemies including on the best way to use the environment to your advantage.

One of my favorite features in the game was the bunker building aspect of the gameplay. It adds a tremendous level of depth to the game and provides the necessary tools to differentiate the game from much of its competition. Players can enable new abilities in order to strengthen their punks. The non-linear skill tree also offers a level of customization not often seen in games within the genre. It’s a well considered and thoughtful approach that makes no two games the same.

I also enjoyed the pixelized graphics and thought that the music composed by Gordon McGladdery and Réal Cardinal was also well thought out and inspired. This flows through to the in game audio developed by Power-up audio. Everything is designed to fit nicely and encapsulate the intended atmosphere.

Unlike many other early access games there is no intention to raise the price of the game as it leaves early access but for FPS fans this is a game that you will want to get in early and provide feedback on to inspire the changes that will make the game even better. It is already an intelligently designed game that has consistently incorporates the feedback of its player base. It’s a sleeper hit and one of the best Steam debuts that I have come across. A very easy recommendation.

It's fun, like, "just one more round" fun, but there's not much there. see my playtime? I completed the game in that amount of time, and I was playing slowly. It's a good early access title, because it's playable and enjoyable, but $15 is a lot to ask for six hours of content for a rogue-lite game. There are far better games in this genre out there that are completed. If you're a fan of dungeon crawlers, scifi, and rogue lites, a far superior early access title is Star Crawlers. Check that out if you like this. What they have is basically a full game.

Verdict: Purchase ONLY if you want to support this developer. Otherwise wait, but do purchase it when it comes out if they've added about ten times the content. This is more of a demo than a game. That's fine for early access. They're doing early access right, even. This review is just to warn away people who are looking for a more robust experience, as we've seen from early access titles like Star Crawlers.

Talk about a return to the classics, with some extras on it.

The gameplay is tight, responsive, and the weapons have some great impact as well. Then add in the mini base building, upgrades, and minor character customisation via weapons and armour pieces and you have all the makings for great fun.

It's rare to get get an FPS that has some proper twitch controls, but that have the weapons, enemies and impact to make it all fit.

There are several characters/punks in the game, and you unlock them, along with further base upgrades via Tech you acquire when raiding corporate facilities. Each Punk have their own weapons they specialize in, meaning you can tailor the base to them. Buying specific upgrades that give them bonuses, or you can go for an all round good team.

So far though, it seems the only way to get to buying new Punks or upgrades is via the desert salesman, and I've only encountered him after dying, not much of an issue as when you're on a roll you're on a good role.

I'd happily recommend the game to any FPS fan that likes a good twitch shooter and some retro graphics.
