Games for Windows Live totally ruined this game. You have to be logged in to xbox live to be able to save your game, and it tells you that you are NOT logged in (EVEN IF YOU ARE) nd therefore, you cannot save your progress. Minus 10/10 rating thanks to Microsoft.

Do not buy DiRT 3 until GFWL (Games For Windows - Live) is removed. It has essentially made the game unplayable with the latest update, or something. One day I could sign-in and play, the next I couldn't due to a network error; I manually opened the required ports and set up custom rules for GFWL to try and get the network connectivity back, but eventually gave up after an hour or so of messing around with settings and stuff.

GFWL aside, DiRT 3 is/was an awesome game, would recommend - if I could sign on.

***EDIT*** Found a way around the GFWL problem:

Change your password via live.com to something with no special characters - just letters. It's something to do with GFWL not recognizing the "special characters" or something like that. I dunno, but it worked for me!

Even AFTER all the Games for Windows Live gripes (which I had dealt with before and thought I could handle), I bought the game on sale... Only to find out that me paying the money for the game wasn't enough... I get to the second set of races, and I can only play 6 out of 7 of the races because, guess what, Windows Live expected me to BUY the last race. Not only that, but I can't use whatever sponsers I earn by coming in first place because Windows Live expected you to BUY that, too.

So... Basically, you sold me 3/4 of a game and expect me to buy the rest by not allowing me to play what I thought I had already purchased? ♥♥♥♥ you, you greedy ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s.

WARNING - This is still dependant on GFWL which has been shut down by Microsoft. Therefore, you cannot save your progress in anyway as of this writing (and the past year by the sound of it). There is a way to create an offline profile but it too fails. Multiplayer needed GFWL and therefore is also gone. All you can do are single races with the handful of cars that are unlocked from the start.

Do.Not.Buy.

UPDATE: After multiple attempts and making an Xbox account of all things, I now have a profile that works. I still cannot get any of the DLC cars from the LIVE store. Not even the free car pack. Which sucks because it has the 1995 STi in it. The whole GFWL thing is still a Byzantine maze of painful obfuscation and Codies really needs to address this.

Although the game play and features of this game are terrific; there are short comings that screw it over like a streetwalker who accepts competitor's coupons.

The Direct X bug... or at least, running it in full screen causing random crashes... while loading... while in the menus, but more frustratingly (and more commonly) while racing. This is unacceptable. One should not have to force DX9 or run in window mode to play this.

The long awaited removal of GFWL... Get rid of it. Just do it. Stop dangling the carrot and do it. Thanks to the buggy garbage this is it has corrupted yet another saved profile. The last time at 120+ saved races it wrecked a profile. Out of boredom and reinstalling thankfully it only corrupted a profile with 2 saved races. That served as an ample reminder of why this is a waste of space and time on this gamer's computer.

Great game, if it would ever work properly.

Better luck with Dirt 4...

Get rid of GFWL, it is a load of crap. It takes a stupid amount of time to make an account, and not to mention you have absolutely no choice or else you can't save any progress.

This game requires GFWL whiuch is no longer supported. This means you can no longer save your game. This makes the game broken. There is a workaround (see link) that allows somepeople to continue to play the game, but this is not something that you as a customer should be required to do.

If you can be bothered to jump through the hoops to get the game to work the game is fun a satisfying rally game. But unitil the GFWL has been stripped from the game I cannot reccomend it.

Workround:

Typical of the series sends us Dirt 3 in the comprehensive campaign about 20 hours across the globe and in eight completely new scenarios of Kenya and Norway on Monaco and Aspen up to Michigan and Battersea in London.

For the first time, we may also boarded over snowy and icy slopes, which makes a lot of fun and adds variety to the game. For more rally flair, the new and very successful weather effects provide. To race in the cockpit view around the muddy from Smelter, while it is raining in torrents, strutting the AI opponents dense clouds of spray behind the windshield has struggled to cope with the floods, literally gives you the feel how tough this sport is.

The career mode of Dirt 3 offers six varied race modes. While we know the most clear from the predecessor, such as "Trail Blazer" in which we have to do without our forward-looking co-pilot. Make fun sent on the campaign distributed and gradually more challenging tasks anyway. Especially since there are a few new additions here. In addition to the cool drift tournaments especially the Gymkhana is an exciting addition to the series. This applies to string error-free on a closed parking and factory farms mistaken jump and drift stunts to earn points.

Dirt 3 has 98 routes. Before you fall off my chair in amazement in the face of the predecessor quite parlous state selection, we need to move behind a loud "But,". Because the program is cheating, this impressive number by leaving scenarios within the specific sections used more than once and simply arranges differently or take us backwards. The result: So graphically the groundbreaking landscapes through their dense vegetation present tremendous foresight and great lighting too, so relatively quickly, we have seen enough to it.

However, the car models in addition to optical damage model and the 3D cockpit fall in competitors Shift 2 a bit more detail from. In contrast, there is no sound reason for criticism. The engines roar powerful, the licensed pop soundtrack fits, and body damage rattle in abgemischtem excellent surround sound from the speakers. Codemasters has therefore met its goal: "The main thing, it's fun!"

Part confused AI times, an artificially extended campaign, Monaco, somehow does not fit the scenario into play: All of this is enormous criticism on a high level and slows the fun out of only minimal. Codemasters has once again presented a terrific racing game that not only worthy of continuing the series, but they also extended sense. Only for the very intense snow and wet race it is worth buying. Even the cool Gymkhana mode makes thanks to the precise control of much humor, especially as he awakens a perfectionist, I would not have expected me. In summary: Racing player with no claim to a hardcore simulation can not avoid Dirt 3.

Score: 90 / 100

How does this game have a "Mostly Positive" Rating when you can't even save your progress & unlocked cars?

I love this game to death but GFWL ruins it, the developers promised in January 2014 that they'll remove it, yet nothing has happened so far.

Most cars are locked and the only way to unlock them is to BUY them. And even if you want to buy them (which I tried to do with the peugeot 205 gti) you cant, because the in game market doesnt work.
There are no maps, meaning you will have to play a track over 10 times just so that you can remember the patterns...
Multiplayer is hard to set up, even an account which is required in order to save your progress is even harder to set up.
The game is dead, and it should stay dead.

I don't write reviews, but I will make an exception to this because I feel this strongly.

As a game, this is the best in the Dirt series, without doubt.

But it's a TOTAL WASTE OF YOUR MONEY BECAUSE TOU CAN'T SAVE. This is not because of my setup or me being a lama, it's because the game uses Games for Windows Live, which you have to be logged into before it allows you the privillige of saving your game. Except you can't do that, because GFWL died ages ago and the servers got shut down.

What makes it even worse is that Codemasters promised to remove GFWL from this otherwise amazing title......OVER A YEAR AGO - AAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHH.

How Steam can still be selling this it totally beyond me? Who would buy a game knowing beforehand that you cannot save your progress? And to feature it on the Steam homepage as a flash deal in the sale?

Un-be-lieve-able.

</Rage>

I feel better now :D
