Games for Windows Live totally ruined this game. You have to be logged in to xbox live to be able to save your game, and it tells you that you are NOT logged in (EVEN IF YOU ARE) nd therefore, you cannot save your progress. Minus 10/10 rating thanks to Microsoft.

I believe its a perfect game, but the ''Games for Windows LIVE'' makes it real bad. It says i have to update LIVE before i can use it okay, but then it can't update it and gives me an error code. Which that code doesn't lead me to any solve of the problem. So no ''LIVE'' = no save. No save = no point of doing any career in game.

Do windows look like they gonna solve it quick? I think anyone works on the problem even...

In 2013 Codmasters promised they would ditch GFWL (Games for Windows Live). Here we are in mid 2014 and nothing has been done. This is the BEST DiRT game. PERIOD. The problem is many people can't save their games. Outside of that many people would love to purchase the DLC and finish the game. Until Codemasters makes good on their promise none of that can happen and the game is essentially worthless. We've seen Codemasters release and update DiRT Showdown, GRiD Autosport, and Colin McRae Remastered but yet DiRT 3 remains untouched!!!

Codemasters says they are listening to the community. Well, I have created an unofficial "petition". Click thumbs up to tell Codemasters that we are holding them to their promise and we want to see an update.

Regretfully until I see an update to this game I cannot recommend it on any level.

Do not buy DiRT 3 until GFWL (Games For Windows - Live) is removed. It has essentially made the game unplayable with the latest update, or something. One day I could sign-in and play, the next I couldn't due to a network error; I manually opened the required ports and set up custom rules for GFWL to try and get the network connectivity back, but eventually gave up after an hour or so of messing around with settings and stuff.

GFWL aside, DiRT 3 is/was an awesome game, would recommend - if I could sign on.

If you can get past the GFWL, this game is a lot of fun. The cars don't feel like bricks on string, like some other games, there's no unput lag either.

The Narrators feel a little pointless and annoying, but they're not as bad as the one in Shift 2.

But, like others have said, it does have GFWL. I managed to get past it without massive issues, and they are hoping to patch it out (supposedly), but obiously others here have had problems so proceed with caution.

This game requires GFWL whiuch is no longer supported. This means you can no longer save your game. This makes the game broken. There is a workaround (see link) that allows somepeople to continue to play the game, but this is not something that you as a customer should be required to do.

If you can be bothered to jump through the hoops to get the game to work the game is fun a satisfying rally game. But unitil the GFWL has been stripped from the game I cannot reccomend it.

Workround:

Having played all three DiRT games, 3 is definitely the weakest. It's a pretty good game, of course, but it continues the series' lean into the Arcade-style of racing. It comes in full force in this game, where you're rewarded pretty heavily for driving recklessly, cutting corners, using other opponents as your personal turn cushions, etc. As usual, the damage system doesn't do much to mitigate this behavior, since you pretty much have to ram your car full speed at a concrete wall to end up crashing out of the race, and dynamic damage modeling that alters your handling of the vehicle for lesser crashes is near non-existent. The only time that ever came into play for me was during a single pickup truck race, where my front left tire blew out and made turning left extremely difficult.

The game is fun, but unfortunately extremely easy. I played on the second-to-hardest difficulty throughout and ended up getting in 1st in nearly every event on my first try. The pattern to winning is, do whatever it takes to ram your car to first place, then enjoy coasting for the rest of the race. The AI doesn't attempt to overtake you in any situation other than you screwing up a turn so bad you're practically facing the wrong direction. Not to say they should be driving just as recklessly as you're allowed to, but at the same time the AI is simply far, far too shy to overtake you. You truly have to screw up badly to lose 1st place once you have it.

One of DiRT 3's biggest new features is the addition of Gymkhana, a type of "exhibition" event where you drift like a maniac and crash into styrofoam. It breaks up the pace well, but the game's physics make this mode insufferable. The physics of the game were clearly tailored for classic Rally racing, where drifting isn't an absolute necessity at every turn, but in this mode you spend more time drifting than not. The wildly unpredictable controls and harsh penalties for even gently touching the walls add to the frustration. Thankfully you can skip right over these awful events in most cases during single player, but unfortunately you can't avoid them entirely.

Actual racing itself is greatly varied and a lot of fun. The game truly shines during the Rally events, where it's just you vs. some of the meanest, curviest, most dangerous tracks on earth. Rain and nighttime really do affect the gameplay, the former making the entire track a slip 'n slide ride, the latter limiting your view severely and forcing you to hone your reflexes. There is also snow, which I didn't enjoy as much due to the difficulty in knowing where the track ends and snow beings when it snows heavily, but it clearly affects gameplay and does provide some good variety. I haven't checked the hard numbers, but it seems like there are more event types than DiRT 2, which got a little boring with limited vehicle types. Here you have Rally vehicles, dune buggies, pick up trucks, and some truly frightening supercars. Unfortunately you don't get to drive a semi truck again like in DiRT 1 (which was just bizarre and a lot of fun), though. Events include Rally, trail blazer, head-to-head, and Gymkhana (ugh) among others. They're all basically variations of "drive the fastest", though, and the game's Tour mode really goes through practically every permutation of car+location+track+weather condition, so it does get kind of tiring toward the end.

One thing to mention is the complete absence of Codemasters' efforts in removing GFWL from this title. As of this day there's 1) no removal of the platform, and 2) no word from Codemasters about the effort other than "it's taking longer, sit tight". It means that all of the DLC is unavailable (of which there is a lot, and unfortunately the game really shoves it down your throat by mixing DLC cars and tracks among the car/track selection menu. Kinda tacky IMO) and in many cases, the game can't even start. I consider myself lucky in that I bought this game one month ago and played through it entirely with no GFWL issues on my Windows 8.1 system, but I know a lot of poeple aren't as lucky and many can't even log in. Shame on Codemasters for taking this long and really dragging their feet to fix their own game. I have no opinion on the mulitplayer since I didn't touch it.

Overall, DiRT 3 is a pretty fun romp into the world of rally racing once again (and an extremely good-looking one as well), though you should be mindful of the arcade-iest physics of the series (next to DiRT Showdown of course), the groan-inducing Gymkhana events, and the horrid GFWL situation.

Even AFTER all the Games for Windows Live gripes (which I had dealt with before and thought I could handle), I bought the game on sale... Only to find out that me paying the money for the game wasn't enough... I get to the second set of races, and I can only play 6 out of 7 of the races because, guess what, Windows Live expected me to BUY the last race. Not only that, but I can't use whatever sponsers I earn by coming in first place because Windows Live expected you to BUY that, too.

So... Basically, you sold me 3/4 of a game and expect me to buy the rest by not allowing me to play what I thought I had already purchased? ♥♥♥♥ you, you greedy ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s.

It is a really good game... but!

Downside:
To finish 100% the game you will need to spend more money in tracks and cars...
Works with "Games For Windows Live" (shame)

Plus side:
driving is fun...
It have good tracks...
...

I will recommend this game because it is awesome.

But if you like playing games right away and not worry with other logins and buying cars and tracks...
You can buy it to play it for fun!
otherwise forget it

Most cars are locked and the only way to unlock them is to BUY them. And even if you want to buy them (which I tried to do with the peugeot 205 gti) you cant, because the in game market doesnt work.
There are no maps, meaning you will have to play a track over 10 times just so that you can remember the patterns...
Multiplayer is hard to set up, even an account which is required in order to save your progress is even harder to set up.
The game is dead, and it should stay dead.

WARNING - This is still dependant on GFWL which has been shut down by Microsoft. Therefore, you cannot save your progress in anyway as of this writing (and the past year by the sound of it). There is a way to create an offline profile but it too fails. Multiplayer needed GFWL and therefore is also gone. All you can do are single races with the handful of cars that are unlocked from the start.

Do.Not.Buy.

UPDATE: After multiple attempts and making an Xbox account of all things, I now have a profile that works. I still cannot get any of the DLC cars from the LIVE store. Not even the free car pack. Which sucks because it has the 1995 STi in it. The whole GFWL thing is still a Byzantine maze of painful obfuscation and Codies really needs to address this.

Although the game play and features of this game are terrific; there are short comings that screw it over like a streetwalker who accepts competitor's coupons.

The Direct X bug... or at least, running it in full screen causing random crashes... while loading... while in the menus, but more frustratingly (and more commonly) while racing. This is unacceptable. One should not have to force DX9 or run in window mode to play this.

The long awaited removal of GFWL... Get rid of it. Just do it. Stop dangling the carrot and do it. Thanks to the buggy garbage this is it has corrupted yet another saved profile. The last time at 120+ saved races it wrecked a profile. Out of boredom and reinstalling thankfully it only corrupted a profile with 2 saved races. That served as an ample reminder of why this is a waste of space and time on this gamer's computer.

Great game, if it would ever work properly.

Better luck with Dirt 4...
