This Is An amazing game, when you find a match. Its Always region locked, so you rarely find a game. If they implimented the feature where you can change the server, or let everyone play with eachother, It would make the game 100x better.

This review is written with the intent of being VR-focused, so if you do not have a Vive or Rift, this might not apply to you.

So I've just picked it up with the intent to try Elite to see if it's any good in VR (HTC Vive), since there have been a lot of threads about resolution and quality issues. And let me tell you, it is. The immersion is just way beyond most other VR cockpit games, even more so if you play with a HOTAS. The sound design is amazing, the graphics are good, not great, but definitely playable. The best thing about it is though, that it's easy to pick up and get into, despite it's complex mechanics. Only downside so far is the performance, to achieve a steady 90 fps, a 980 TI can only run this on medium to high. But I suppose that this will change in future versions of the game.

So as a conclusion, if you do have a Vive or Rift, definitely give this a try. Even if you're not a fan of space-sims, this is definitely a good experience given it's relatively low price compared to other VR games.

Edit: I've now played all the training missions as well as some arena matches. Some of the critical voices are right, there is not too much content in here, and the multiplayer matches take quite some time to find. But still, it shows the great gameplay value that Elite Dangerous has, and gives a good look into the combat-side of the real deal. And then, if you're not into MMOs, this is still a good casual game.

Edit 2: I've read quite a bit about that people have issues with the UI giving eye strain. I had that myself, but running the game with 1.5x super sampling or at least MLAA4x and a green HUD, eye strain isn't an issue for me. And that's even though I see the individual pixels of the Vive. Also, I'm using a custom foam pad to increase the FoV.

By far one of the most polished games in VR and one of my favorite experiences on the Vive. Do yourself a favor and get a good HOTAS. I can't believe how cheap Arena is. This is an easy buy. Get it now so there are more players for matches.

This "game" should be a DLC of the original Elite Dangerous. The progress still gives you CQC rank, but it feels disappointing that you need to play a separate game in order to progress in open play mode.

Makes no sense to me that it's tagged as an independent game, and the price is greedy.

Wouldn't recommend it as of now, if you are not really aiming to upgrade CQC ranks.

Dreadful game

Waits too long followed by highly unbalanced matchmaking.

Avoid anything from Frontier.

I had fun in this, but i suck against other players in the arena, the MM doesn't make sense at all. Buts its good that i could try this game for 7€ instead of buying the game for 26€ ( what i will probably do because its awesome in VR)

When there are matches available, this is the best (and prettiest) combat flight simulator since Freespace 2. The problem is there often are not matches available.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE ED OR ED HORIZONS
this is included in the versions above, this game is like a stand alone for people who just want to dog fight in ships and not have the full game, its cqc basicaly, so you have all the fun of teamdeath match and capture the flag in a dog fight kinda mode and not the full game.. its worth the cheap price, and controlls are easy to setup,

If you already owned Elite Dangerous, STOP!
You can get it for free via their store page, where you can request CDKey to be redeemed on your steam.

If you don't know what is Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous: Arena is the mini version of the normal Elite Dangerous, which only contain the close quarter combats in it. Both "Arena" and normal Elite Dangerous plays on same CQC realms so if you own Arena and your friend own Elite Dangerous, you both can play together.

About Elite Dangerous: Arena
As I mentioned previously, it's a stripped version of Elite Dangerous, with much lower price point. I guess FDev wants to appease casual gamers which into space combat dogfighting game (but not into Elite) so they don't have to dish money on the full game.

What's inside?
  • 4 Ships, each with unlockable loadouts
  • 3 Game modes (Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Capture the Flag)
  • 5 Different maps
  • Progressions, as you rank up you unlock new modules and loadout.

Elite Dangerous: Arena. A standalone version of the CQC module that is included in Elite Dangerous.
If you buy Elite: Dangerous you get Arena included, and if you buy Arena, you can then purchase Elite Dangerous for the difference in price.

Though the developers compare it to Call of Duty, i'd say this could become the CSGO of space sim shooters if it develops in the right way.. At the moment you can play DM, TDM or CTF matchmaking gamemodes. You can add friends and queue together to join the same games. As you play, you'll rank up and unlock new ship slots and modules to use.

Like most competitive multiplayer games, if you're new, it can be frustrating. If you jump in to DM you will get killed over and over and it will seem like it is impossible to avoid laser fire. This game isn't like War Thunder Arcade mode, you can't wiggle your ship around and dodge bullets, if there is a player behind you in open space, he WILL hit you. You need to learn that this game is less about fancy evasive action and twitch shooter precision, and more about judging the bigger picture and getting your ship in the right place and avoid being caught in the open.

Features ED: Arena needs:
1) Leagues and ELO based player rankings with player avatars.
2) Lobbies or some kind of indication of who is online and in which game modes.
3) Ability to host custom unranked games to mess around with friends and try things out.
4) Bots.
5) Spectator mode.
6) Cosmetic unlocks, more maps, modules, ships etc

I have confidence that the Devs fully intend to add many of the features I list here but I can't help but feel they should have held back release until they included some of these things as they are kind of essential if they expect the gamemode to maintain a strong player base.

Do not buy this if you already own Elite Dangerous.
Elite Dangerous: Arena is a standalone version of lite Dangerous's CQC mode. It is the competitive PVP mode in the full game of Elite Dangerous but without the full open world PVE content.
If you buy the full game you will get access to these modes anyway.
If you are solely looking for the constructed PVP content then this is well worth the price. You are contented to others that play these modes in the full game so the population of games is already pretty high so finding a game is quick.
You rank up after each game and slowly unlock access to new ships and upgrades such as weapons and shields.
Defiantly worth it if you are only interested in the comabt element of the game but if you want the full open world experience make sure to purchase the full title.

If you are planning to buy the game but you are not sure if you like the gameplay or not then you can just buy this, play training missions and then hop into the arena. If you decide to buy the game you are going to get your money for this back.

So I'll start of by saying that if you own the main game DO NOT BY THIS.

Ok so Arena only includes the CQC mode that is found i the main game. In Arena you will not get the full game of Elite. So CQC contains 3 game modes Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch(free for all) and Capture the Flag. There are 4 ships that all have the ability to be customized.

Pros:
-Cheap
-Fun
-Lots of players
-No pay to win

Cons:
-Steep learning curve
-Only three game modes

For the price, this game is definitely worth it. 9/10

Elite's TDM-styled mode as a standalone product makes perfect sense. I have lots of friends who aren't willing to give Elite's main game a shot as of yet. This makes sense as you have to invest a lot of time into the main game to get going and it isn't always the most fun thing if you're not already into space sim-type games. This release will definitely give new players a chance to see how Elite's flight model and combat work for a pretty fair price IMO.

Also CQC is an insanely fun gamemode. $7 is definitely a good price for that alone. I'd say go for it.

Elite has always played great and looked great. Given those separating the dogfighting aspect makes for a solid package even if it is smaller in scale than most games of this nature. Still an absolute blast to play though and in that beats out any competitor currently out there with ease.
