Interesting and Intentional Bugs, and Update 1.0.4 Live!

Moonlight update 1.0.4 is live. This update is rather small as it mainly addresses a few bugs and tweaks. It does however have two new music tracks within the jukebox on the main menu, in preparation for something special. So before I get to this update's highlights, let's discuss ... interesting and intentional bugs.

I've made it no secret ... that Moonlight has secrets. There are goofy little signs that don't seem to make sense at first, there are doors that are locked, there is a cryptic message from an alien, and there is even a sign that clearly states the following ...

"The code for this door, is broke you see."
"I meant to fix it, but I really lacked sleep."
"I typed a two, it should have been a three."
"I’m just gonna leave it, please forgive me."

Now, since most of you following the game have most likely completed it, then you would know that this sign was written by the Master. It’s an intentional bug, and the door is indeed broken ... for now! As I was trying to explain above, I never had intentions to leave Moonlight as it is, I put all sorts of hidden stuff in the game. Some players have caught on to some of it, but most of it has probably been given the blind eye of confusion. There is also a character of certain interest and that is Inferno. I've received plenty of emails, and or questions about him. Why is he there, why does he not appear at the end of the game, why is he "The Lumpo of Fire"?

There will be an update to Moonlight within the future, expanding a bit on Inferno. There are some completely new areas, new Lumpos, and even some new mechanics to the game. Now Inferno's story will not be out in the open for everyone. As a matter of fact, this content will be for those players who really want more, and are not afraid to experiment. Most players will complete Moonlight as it is, and I'm ok with that. I mentioned a specific sign above, and it will be the key to this new adventure. So I hope I intrigued you a bit. You're going to want to be looking for update 1.1.0. It's a ways off since it adds quite a bit to the game, but it will be coming. Here is a very early preview, the art is very subject to change, as it's just the rough concept.

Back to this current update! The main highlights of update 1.0.4 are as follows.

  • The default vertex mode has been changed to normal due to graphical glitches on integrated video cards.
  • A bug was fixed where you could still pick up nuts for Buko after beginning Lanuno’s quest.
  • The jukebox now displays the correct input information.
  • Two new music tracks have been added to the jukebox in preparation for … something.

It's Official

Hey folks! After some deliberation, and some perusing through various reviews, and a couple other sources, I've dropped the price of Moonlight to $2.99. Let's discuss why.

The price drop makes the game more accessible to those that want it on Steam, and that is the main reason I chose to do it. However, the game is also short. I understand if a few folks get pissed off about it, especially those that may have recently purchased the game at $4.99. I'm fully responsible, fire away.

The original price did have intent though. There was a plan to do some sort of expansion within the current game. If you questioned those locked doors, or deciphered the Alien's text, then you may have had suspicions.

Now though, it's time for me to really question what I want to do next. Thank you all so much, for your support, and patience! I'm still very new to this whole Steam game :)

If I had to describe this game with three words, they would be "short and sweet."

I enjoyed playing the game, probably because it's the type with those quests with variety. I'm pretty much saying each quest felt like its own thing. Another good thing is that there aren't so many quests that they get way too boring, like in a lot of other games.

The game does feel a bit short, but programming takes a lot of hard work! Also, I think this is MonkeyMaw's first game, if it's not then it's the only one I could find on Steam. If it is, then it's an amazing first game!

Generally though, I enjoyed playing it.

This was probably one of the cutest games I've ever played. Your only mission in life is to reach the moon. You meet friends along the way who help you fulfill your dreams <3 This game brings in a new layer into the storyline towards the end (I won't spoil anything) Unlimited lives and no enemies +1 from me.

10/10 <-- probably the most honest rating I've given.

Short game, very enjoyable for 1 hour.

I would love the story to continue after the moon, feel a bit betrayed after deciphering the message but nothing continue after that.

8/10

Great small game, the story is amazing (but a bit short) and the music is just amazing! I'll recommend this game for someone who wants to relax a little bit (with a few hard jumps though)

8/10 because the story is a bit short (but he said he was going to expand it though)

Beautiful game that was inspired by the developer's loved ones. I have found the story touching and somewhat deep. I also find it somewhat humorous because of the "aliens." Other than that, the game is really short, you can finish it in approximately a two hour time frame.

"Moonstruck Lumpos"
Moonlight is a short, but cute and lovely animated platformer adventure made with Gamemaker by one person. You are in the world of lumpos and they don't like strangers. For earning their trust you have to do some little favors, solve puzzles or play hide & seek. The hats you win in those contests give them magical powers and each time you come closer to your journey to the moon. The soundtrack is also very relaxing and it is really an easy going walkthrough except the missable "Absolutely Wizardry" achievement. Loved to play this.

Cute little combat free platformer where you are simply trying to find a way to the moon with the help of a bunch of hat loving little critters. The controls were decent, the graphics were perfect for what this game brings to the table, the puzzles were casual, and overall, it was just a charming little hour long adventure. As such though, I wont really go into great detail about the story, but it's worth playing.

Id give it 7.5 rockets shot to the moon out of 10 possible.

p.s. If anybody read the upside down text at the end, please comment on my profile with what it said. Cheers.

One-Sentence Summary
This sidescrolling non-combat adventure game is a beautifully made one hour vignette that is highly endearing, whimsical, and at moments quite touching.

Strengths:
+ Beautiful atmosphere, artwork, soundtrack, writing
+ Concisely explored themes of friendship & camaraderie
+ A testament that games can be short and still feel complete
+ Fun and interesting meta narrative elements
+ Unique HATS that grant special powers and popularity!

Weaknesses:
- Controls can feel slightly lagged/stiff at times
- the.kuribo ≠ the.kinubo

Final Thoughts:
This is a wonderful game that comes together very well in a concise, yet fully realized and beautifully atmospheric world. The writing is not verbose, yet it still manages to convey themes that many games with much higher budgets and longer playtimes struggle to do. This is a game that I think would capture the imagination of both young and old, and I fully intend to have my young children play through this game as the writing is simple enough that they can understand it while also picking up some of the positive thematic messages on friendship, tenacity, and achieving one's dreams through the help of others. My hats off to MonkeyMaw Games for creating this, I highly recommend Moonlight to all!

I normally have no desire to play these types of games. However, a friend had me play this and for that I am thankful. This was an incredible experience. While it was a short game, within that time, I felt like I begun to care for these silly little characters. The music was absolutely incredible and truly made the game work. The developer made a good choice in the composer. Also, I felt warm inside from reading the credits. Seeing what inspired this game made even more special. In the end, I felt like I had a good journey and got to know an interesting world. Overall, I would say that this game is worth the purchase. The developer seems like a nice guy/girl and I feel good supporting people like that. I would definately be interested in the next game that he/she makes, especially if they have a similar atmosphere and fitting music as Moonlight did. I would recommend wholeheartedly

I felt bad for them in the end accepting their fate to the Master. Being shut down. Knowing that their life is temporary and not even real, yet trying to live regardless. That made me sad, but not in a bad way... in a more impactful way. I also felt bad that the character you get to control was leaving them. And as a final note, when Kinubo reaches his "destination" and talks to the character there but cant understand him, I'm not sure if I need to decipher what he is saying for the game to end. I cant figure out what to do. I think that is supposed to be the end and we can all easily guess what the green guy is saying. Overall, I am very happy with this game. Incredible job Developer. I look forward to your future work.

An adorable story-centric and atmospheric platformer. Albeit short, very much worth your while.

In this little metroidvania like platformer you, as the main character Kinubo, try to get to the moon. There are no battles, no brain-scratchingly hard puzzles to stop you. The platforming is on the easier side even for someone who does not really excel at such things. That's alright though, for as silly as the story seems to be, it does grip you quite unexpectedly.

The design choices are excellent. The art is well thought out and executed for a cute, simple look. The music however, is the thing that makes this game come together. It's relaxing and sets a great mood for the game. Moonlight might just be one of the only games which soundtrack I loved through and through.

An excellent game. Highly recommended, especially for winding down after a busy day. Would also work well as an interactive goodnight story for children (though there were some word choices you might feel the need to edit).

Rarely have I been this impressed in this short of time.
