Incredible action-horror game set in the underground metro of Moscow after an apocalypse in 2013. Amazing storytelling and an immersive atmosphere with some of the best visuals available even 3 years on. Offers a story driven easy mode to a hardcore ranger mode with deadly weapons and scarce ammuntion. Would wholeheartedly recommend for anyone with a taste for action, horror or a curiosity of alternate post-apocalyptic settings. The book this game is based on, "Metro 2033" by Dmitry Glukhovsky, is well worth a read if you enjoyed the game.

I can't believe this game is almost 4 years old.

Metro 2033 is a stunningly beatufull, and frightfull game. I know i am incredibly late with reviewing this game, i finished it about 30 minutes ago, and was blown away by the ending (not going to spoil anythin though) I played Last Light before i played 2033, and actually think i like 2033 better. Last light is a brilliant game, but this game had such a great personality.

In Metro 2033 you live in the (you guessed it) underground metro in Russia, the year 2033. You play as the very silent Artyom. Who barely remembers anything from before the nuclear war, which made the surface of the earth unhabitable. Artyom is a Ranger, who has sworn to protect his homeland from any threat out there in the tunnels of the Metro, and up on the surface. A grand threat has emerged from the distant areas of the surface. The so called "Dark Ones" start messing with peoples minds, and takes controll over Human controlled outposts and such. It is now up to Artyom, and the few Rangers to eliminate this threat. "If it's hostile, you kill it."

+The game is stunningly beatifull
+Great game mechanics
+Interesting (altough few) weapons and tools
+Interesting and adaptive world
+I Personally encountered no bugs
+Terrifying monsters
+Creepy enviroment

-Bulky face animations
-Not the greatest voice acting (and why does only Artyom speak in the loading screens?)

Metro 2033 is a must have for anyone who enjoys somewhat scary games. You can probably pick it up really cheap on the christmas sale in a couple of days, i got it for about 3 euros last fall sale.

Must have. 9,5/10

Great game with an incredible atmosphere. Between the terrifying monsters, or those moments when your flashlight suddenly goes out, the game is a well paced, solidly constructed experience. Levels are based around metro stations and the tunnels that connect them and the many sights you see make for an unforgettable journey. The post-apocalyptic lifestyle of the denizens of the metro is brilliantly realised, making for an incredibly moody game.

The guns feel great, and the gameplay solid but it's the creatures and world of Metro 2033 that will stay will you.

Metro 2033 practically drips with delicious atmosphere. It features excellent visuals: DirectX 11 allows eye-popping animations of which few games take advantage. Metro 2033 has beautiful lighting, shadows, and tessellation, and explores motion blur in good ways.

The flaw, in my eyes, is that you are asked to make choices early in the game that could make the game un-finishable later. In particular: you can only purchase good, full air filters for your gas mask at the beginning of the game. This means that a standard strategy of conserving your cash at the beginning until you know what you really need will result in a failed game. You'll get through 2/3 of the game and find that you can't continue, because you can't scavenge enough air filters on the way. And because it's a game-on-rails, you can't go back to the beginning, or take a side trip to a marketplace. You're stuck.

This style of gameplay, this artificial difficulty, is a tactic of early adventure games. Asking you to restart the game and try again smacks of having your lantern stolen by the thief in Zork I. You're hosed, but you don't know it yet. And when you find out, you have to restart, and waste all of the effort you've made.

Games today generally let you make bad decisions, but they also let you recover from those decisions. This is different than games being "hard" or not hard" - I'm talking about coupling two different game design mechanics that don't go together well: 1) linear progression and 2) being able to make choices, in a knowledge vacuum, that could break the game.

After realizing I had broken my chances of finishing the game, I looked around online and found that this is a common complaint of Metro 2033. But, I also learned that the game has several ways to get different endings that require you to do certain strange things in the beginning. For example, to collect particular items from different locations and bring them together. This means you'd have to play the game several times to get these different outcomes. This confirmed for me that the "gotta know to buy air filters" problem was probably a design choice, an intentional punishment. BOO.

Of course, Metro 2033 is frequently on sale, and I've seen it in a Humble Bundle, so it's hard to complain. If you buy it, just remember to stock up on air filters at the beginning!

bring your guns, bring your knives, and bring your focus. this game demands it all!

metro 2033 is a singleplayer first person shooter from now defunct publisher THQ. this game is set in a post-apocalyptic soviet russia specifically moscow. the survivors of the nuclear war that are now living the winter in the subways and sewers of the city are in a desperate war for survival against mutants, nazi's, rival bands of bandits, nightmares beyond beliefe, and the fabrics of their once mighty nation: communism.

you play as artyom once such survivor who is cast as a reluctant hero that must deliever dire warnings to what is elft of the russian government and the russian military about the encroaching threat of a new and sinister threat. on his way he will explore and witness firsthand the plights of the russian people and the desperation in which they have cast themselves into. he will see horrors beyond imagination, and meet a vast colorful cast of characters ranging from the aloof and reckless to the stoic and philisophical.

visually the game is superb for its time and still holds up reasonably well, the dank sewers and the harsh nuclear winter wastelands above represent themselves well and do a good job of depicting how dead everything actually is. this is a double edged sword however as while this is the game intent it may seem like a very bleak and dreary backdrop for an otherwise solid game. however the design of characters themselves in the game has a creepy vibe to it with eyes tracking your every motion. to the point where some chaarcters have them bug out of their head almost. its very creepy and can sometimes lead you to thinking a character might be insane or posessed

the game can be played one of two ways. the game can be played stealthily with you using shaodws, silenced weapons, and careful patience and secondary routes to bypass obstacles and enemies. or it can be played as a standard run of the mill shooter.

the twist to this formula is two fold; the first is in the ammo itself. certain high grade ammunition is used as currency, it can also be used as ammunition. careful use of ammo pays of big as a result in letting you buy the equipment you want or need while doing the opposite will make you wish you had not. the second comes in the form of above ground sections of the game. while above ground the player must wear an air filtration system and filters must be exchanged manually. having enough ai is a requirement to survive and if your maks is ever broken in combat you will need to restart from a checkpoint, or a saved game, or scramble madly with a precious few seconds to get another that might be lying around.

the games difficulty essentially comes down to three things. the strength of AI/weapons, the amount of ammunition you will find and sell/buy things with/for, and the amount of air in each filter. lower difficulties are total cakewalks but the two highest difficulties range ahrd and ranger easy will see you dying from two lucky hits and having to go through sections of the game begging the game to throw you a few extra bullets for your favourite gun. guns themselves and melee weapons are all fairly useful and all have their pro's and con's making your weapon choice important when passing through a tough section of the game.

THE LAST PARAGRAPH BEING SAID

the DLC which adds range mode (which is free) also adds two guns the volt driver and the heavy automatic shotgun. the former of those two breaking the game fairly badly due to its high sell value and powerful attacks. at the final mission i had hundred of rounds to spare and could have probably killed a few hundred more enemies before finally begging for ammo and was more than capable of felling any foe.

the audio for the game is on par with anything you can expect from a modern game and the voices sound good. nothing more i can really add here, sorry. things go boom, beasts howl, human enemies swear, crude vehicles and machines whine and groan. this being said some voice acting feels dead and free of emotion. this perhaps though is intended and ment to further display how depressing things are in the tunnels of moscow. you can be the judge yourself

the game however is atmospheric and the achievements range from the mundane freebie to the frustrating and hard. and ultimately as a person with 100% achievement complation on it, consider the game a worthwhile experience. artyom takes four and a half bong hits.. out of 5 XXXXx/XXXXX
