About This Game

Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised Underground. Having never ventured beyond your Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind.

I am unsure of how to express just how much I enjoyed this game. A great story line, something I look into EVERY game I play, with so great graphics. This is a 10/10 game. I suggest anyone who enjoys fps style games, give this game a try. Its replay value is low how ever, but all in all I recomend this game to all.

Having played the sequel first I'm not sure which I like more but this is certainly very very good.
TL;DR: Metro 2033 certainly stands up well on its own, its very quirky and dated in some respects, but a solid set of shooter mechanics and rich characters build upon the impressive backdrop of a terrifying post-apocalyptic Moscow. Best played in russian in the dark.

The long version: Welcome to a world of slums built into stations, Mutants to haunt your nightmares, supernatural elements, all combined to create the creepy and depressing post-apocalypse Moscow, like the sequel it is often truly disturbing, with horror elements coming into play to break up the action.
The story of Artyom is a simple premise with a brilliant unfolding story in which he and a small cast of allies attempt to save his station and the wider metro (for all its infighting and flaws) from the threat of the Dark Ones. The characters are well written and acted, even if the face models and animation are left a bit wanting, Khan and some of the others look spooked stiff.
The game sports a visceral combat style, a decent if finicky stealth system, an array of exotic and iconic weapons and gear. Combat is tense and picking your fights carefully is the name of the game here.
This is a pretty linear survival horror game however, the emphasis on survival coming from the use of gas masks with filters and Military Grade Ammunition currency with ammo generally being scarce, especially on higher difficulties. The levels while accomadating and rewarding exploration are usually, as the setting might suggest, rather straightforward.
A tense, moody and spectacular game start to finish, bring spare undies.

A nice challenge in the midst of all the casual games with a great story too. A good adaptation of the book one might say.
Gameplay was smooth for the most part although I did experience a couple of glitches that required me to load my last save.
8/10

Great game. I love post-apocalyptic games and this is one of the best because of it's story driven single player campaign and the clausrophobic environment of the russian metro. Very immersive especially when played in ranger mode in russian language.

One of the best first person shooters out there. It has a great story, interesting environments and unique mechanics. The things that brings it home, however, is the atmosphere. When you put the gasmask on, see the glasses crack or get a little foggy, hear yourself taking every breath... When you check the ammo count in your gun by literally looking at the open magazine or inspecting said magazine... Or just seeing how people have made lives for themselves in the metro and how beasts have set up nests all throughout the tunnels... It is simply unrivaled in terms of the claustrophobic, post-apocalyptic atmosphere it is able to deliver. If you're a fan of things like that this game is definitely a must have!

One of the best singleplayer shooters I've played in recent years. The gunplay is great, the story is well presented, the pacing is great, and it's actually fairly challenging. Also, the game presents its 'universe' exceptionally well. The atmosphere in the stations/'cities' is especially strong; you get the impression you're in a place where people actually live, although your ability to interact with the world itself is fairly limited. Although the STALKER comparisons are pretty much inevitable, Metro really isn't particularly similar to stalker outside of the post-apocalyptic setting and similar visual style.

Pros: captivating story line will keep you immersed for a good 9 hour play through, and probably for a second play through with the multiple ending. Cons: replayability after that is little, the game is very linear and should really have coop or lan.

I got this game years ago, and I stopped playing after the first encounter with humans. Now 5 years later I revisited and I can tell you, the game is 10/10. Now I have 50h+ both in the original Metro 2033 and in the Redux version. This game is highly recomended, if you follow the game's slogan and "Enter the Metro" you will get such an atmoshpere you won't forget.

However I advise you to play this game, instead of the Redux version, the orignal one creates a way more better atmoshpere, and the voice actors in the Redux version are just ridicoulus. (Eg: the kids's voice in Redux sounds like 100kg+ men's voice.) I dont like the new user models for your main companion as well. Khan outfit in the Redux version is so much worst than his in the original one.

A lot of player advice to play the game with Russian voice, but personally I find the English one 10/10 as well.

There is one reason to not play this game. If you like fast peaced gameplay like cod or battlefield. In this game every bullet count, exploring your surrondings is crucial.

So "It's no rest for the wicked as you know. Forward, my soldiers, great deeds await!"

I had such a great time I felt very bad for the dark ones in the end after I realized they had feelings and just wanted to live.
Now i'm finally going to read the book but not before I complete Metro last light another time as it is the next episode.
It was so good I just want to beat this game again on harder diffficulty and find the other endings.

I have just finished this game and I feel like I have just watched one great memorable movie set in a dark, cold post-apocalyptic world. Very engaging story, you will feel like you're in Artyom's shoes as it progresses !
The graphics are just amazing, astonishing and eye-catching. Specially in large landscape shots. The gameplay is immersive as you'll get thrown in different environments along the way that make you feel like you are living in the metro with those people. Diverse weapons, deceptive and deadly foes, it's just the deadly post-apocalyptic mix I always wanted !
Also, I am in love with this game's music, it just blows me out of the water !
To put it consicely, Metro 2033 is THE post-apocalyptic story I have always wanted to "read" or in this case play. It might suffer from a few technical issues on both the audio and AI's (too hard sometimes) sides. However, the overall experiences just absolutely compensates for that.
Metro 2033 is now officially one of my all-time favorite titles !
