The optimisation is pretty bad, but i honestly didn't care if the graphics weren't top notch because the gameplay definitely made up for it! Really great and atmospheric game with a post-apocalyptic and horror feel to it.

Mixed opinions about this one, the game it self is okay and I like the atmosphere and story. But it's also frustratingly difficult, linear, and at times glitchy and even drops frames. I don't know If I would recommend this game after what I just went through... Boredom and perseverance are the only reason I played through it entirely. It's not a bad game, just not great either.

Dark, Dingy and Scary, I loved every minute of this game, the graphics are nice and good, and the end totally made me trip balls

It's a good game and you should play it, there really isn't many downsides apart from the FOV, but its only a 8 hour game it shouldn't bother you, there are work arounds too

I went into this game rather sceptical. I am not typically a fan of shooters, with the rare exception (Crysis comes to mind). But I gave this game a fair shot, and made it all the way to Chapter 3, before I gave up.

Metro 2033 takes place in a wasteland Russia, where humanity has been driven underground by monsters and deadly air. You play as Artyom, some guy who lives in the Metro tunnels and shoots things I guess. Then this other guy, Hunter, comes along and gives you some quest that makes you leave your nice little home.

The combat, for a shooter, is just awful. Fighting the basic monsters was unreasonably costly. I could unload an entire clip of my assault rifle into the monster and it would still keep coming. And with no notable cover system, it was really a game of run and gun and try not to die. Like Call of Duty, but with less ammo.

The graphics in the game are decent. Nothing remarkable, per se, but good to look at. Except the people. All the people look the same, and I cannot tell one from the other. That made it really hard to find the one person I was supposed to talk to out of the 50 that don’t even interact with me.

All in all, it is not a bad game. Just not the right game for me. Kind of like how some people think mushrooms are delicious. I disagree, and therefore they are all wrong.

Very nice game, good atmosphere. For me the gameplay was rather long, up to 16 hours, but I have to say that my play style is quite slow. Notice that this game is already 6 years old, so the graphics are sometimes a bit simple and ugly, but for me this was not a problem.

I finally had a chance to play Metro 2033. I must say that I really enjoyed the environment, lighting and visual effects such as the visions and sequences (particularly end game). Some spooky,, albeit scripted parts.

However, I feel that this game is not so much a game. Cut scene after cut scene after cut scene. I am furious with how often the game takes control over Artims (the players) movement. Also, the stealth mechanic in this game is frustrating.. everything the players walks over makes noise and alerts nearby monsters and human like enemies. Furthermore, I feel as though the gas mask / time sensitive air supply mechanic of the game limits exploration... too often I found that when playing I needed to keep running to the next section to avoid running out of air. This leaves little time to enjoy the outside environment that is a clear wonder, and really should be better appreciated by the artistic design team.

The inventory is a annoyance...

I played the game on Ranger hardcore mode. Although a bit challanging... I felt that this mode only really serves to provide some challage at the expense of looking at the floor all the time to scrounge for supplies instead of enjoying the creative beaty of the game. AI interaction is dull. The game is full of scripted events and enemy AI utilize small walking paterns making the game feel less organic than its potential. The AI is dumb to say the least.

Visually the game is still competitive, even by todays standards. However, No V-sync.. Which is much needed. Perhaps Redux has it.

I only recommend the game if one can get it for $2.00 or less, as the game is nearly 8 years old and little to no replay value unless one comepleted it on easy on first playthrough.

Wow. Just wow. One of the best games I've ever played. This game is a must play for anyone who loves great games. In this game you play as Artyom where in a young age he is forced to seek help for his home after the nuclear fallout killed almost everyone except the people hiding in the Metros. The adventures and different creatures in this game are amazingly creative and there are different ways to counter them, also you can survive different situations on how you like and how you would do in real life (games forces you to survive the way it wants on few sitatuations). This game also shows on how different ideologies still seperate humans on the toughest times.

PROS : No need for pros go try this game its amazing
CONS: DICKMOLES aka the moles which appear in a mission.. so annoying ( thanks to a friend for the name suggestion)

It is a very beautiful game (via graphics). The storyline is ok. The gunfights/stealth sections are more painful in this game, than in real life.

The ai (stealth) - If you decide to sneak your way past, the only way how you'll manage to do this is fail over and over again, until you find the paths you CAN sneak down, and the paths you CANNOT. If you ever encounter any situation, where you think you can/should shoot an enemy during stealth, stop thinking that right away!! Apparently when people say "God is always watching" these devs took that quote a bit too seriously. Anyways, if you shoot anyone during stealth (it doesn't matter how) he'll scream, fight back, or somehow telepathically tell his friends of your exact gpa coordinates. This is NOT a stealth game.

The ai (loud) - When you do fail at stealth, EVERONE will know exactly where you are. Once the element of surprise is lost, even hiding in the shadows won't make a difference. Then they will all rush into you, killing you easily.

Health - This is an interesting mechanic, that I'd like to see used in other games (too bad the idea came from an overall bad game company). When you get shot, you can identify your health in a similar fashion to the CoD franchise, only in this game you have multiple mini medkits that you can apply to yourself during the battle, thus healing yourself quicker. This doesn't usually make a difference in a firefight, though.

Monsters - There isn't much to say here. They are similar to the zombies of left 4 dead, only they usually take a few more hits.

Apocalypse - If there is anything good about this game, it's the mask/filter mechanics. In case you didn't know, this game takes place in a fallen state of Russia. The surface of the dead country is uninhibitable to the people, and you're forced to wear a mask to reach certain parts of the city. The mask can break and your filters usually don't last long. However, you can identify how long your filter will last, on your watch (green/yellow/red meter).

Overall, this game seems like it would have been good.....if these devs programmed the ai properly, or at least didn't cram their pathetic attempt at stealth down your throat.

Highly immersive first-person action game with a moral message

When playing and enjoying Metro 2033 during spring 2016, it was hard to believe that this game is already six years old. Although a redux-version appeared more recently, I preferred to play the original game, curious about the developer's (4A Games) original intentions and achievement.
And some achievement it is: set in a post-nuclear Moscou, where life is mostly confined to the relative subterrean safety of the metro stations and tunnels, this game got under my skin from the start in a way that only few games have managed to do so.

The game is based on the internationally bestselling novel series by the Russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, and as such takes its place among other games based on important books, most noticeably The Witcher series. The narrative element of the game is extremely important: playing as a young Russian, Artyom, you are going on a mission which at first involves saving your home station, but which gradually evolves into something much bigger. The game does an excellent job at immersing the player in the claustrophobic but somehow still functioning society that is surviving in the Moscou metro: passages of peace and tranquillity offer more than enough possibilities to get acquainted with the circumstances in which people manage to survive. While walking around in a station, you often overhear people talking to each other and it pays off to listen to these conversations – they often give important extra information to the next part of the game, or just offer an immersive background. Voices can be set to either Russian or English – I played with English voices the first time, since the subtitles don't translate every conversation, but wnet with Russian the second time around, and though I don't understand the language, it surely made the illusion of being there much more real.

While the game mostly uses fairly standard first-person shooter game mechanics, the gameplay stays fresh and interesting all the time. This is mainly due to the fact that the game encourages and rewards a stealthy approach more than going in guns blazing, especially on the higer difficulty levels. And speaking of difficulty, Metro 2033 got a special, very interesting "Ranger" mode added as a free dlc, which not only takes away the heads-up display but also dramatically reduces the amount of medkits, gasmask filters and especially bullets available throughout the game. The "Ranger Hardcore" mode effectively turns the game from a very good first-person shooter into a truely remarkable first-person post-apocalyptic survival game, where every bullet counts and running out of the very sparse filters for your gasmask turns into certain death. I definitely recommend playing it on this setting - when playing carefully, it offers a very rewarding experience indeed.

Metro 2033 also uses its amazing graphics engine to create a dark and very scary atmosphere, both in the subterrenean portions and in the parts of the game that take place outside in the bombed-out ruins of Moscou. Playing it in complete darkness with my headphones on, it turned into a frightening experience more than once. The story developes from a personal quest for help into a much more universal theme, with the fight against the so-called "Dark Ones" posing very interesting and not so straightforward moral questions about war & peace, good and bad. It is especially this extra dimension, which is woven very sparsely into the game, which lifts it up to a higher, quite unexpected level. Combined with the excellent gameplay, the simply amazing graphics and the truly stunning soundscape, this adds up to a classic action game, which should be in any serious gamer's library.

Playing on my mid-range Skylake i3 dual-core@3.7 Ghz, GTX 760 & 8GB of ram, the game ran very smoothly on the highest settings, although enabling the superb nVidia PhysX did tax the graphics card a bit, dropping slightly below 60fps now and then. The game comes with a very interesting bunch of Steam achievements, which invite the player to try out different approaches and to explore every inch of the world.

Essential gaming experience, which not only offers top-notch action and stealth gameplay, but poses some questions to seriously think about too.

This game.... nothing beats the atmosphere of this game, the fear and anxiety of wandering the vast and dark metro tunnels of Moscow in 2033. The story is phenomenal, and I STRONGLY recommend getting this game if you like horror shooter games with good stories (maybe this is the only game of its kind).

Got it in september 2012, played it twice by now and I'm thinking of playing it again because of how awesome it is.

Get it.

P.S Metro Last Light is a fantastic follow-up to this game.

After 6 years I played metro again to get all achievements. There is a 2nd ending and i just discovered it. This 2nd ending gave me a lesson for life, it literally took me to the next stage of awareness (which might be the subliminal goal of 4k). I'm completely mad about it that i didnt see it before.

This game is definitely THE GAME you must play if you want a good authentic atmosphere. Play the Story at least 2 times with the default ending, then you will fully understand the meaning of the good (second) ending. You will reach a new level of awareness.
It's very tricky to get the good ending so use google or whatever.

NOTE: IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGE I WANT TO DELIVER YOU, YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGE OF THE GAME, SO DONT PLAY THIS GAME. YOU PROBABLY ARE A PERSON WHO DOESN'T THINK/CARE MUCH ABOUT THAT, WHATS REALLY GOING ON AROUND THE PLANET. KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED, DONT USE YOUR BRAIN TO OFTEN AND OBEY YOUR GOVERNMENT. TV IS YOUR GOD.

Haven't played the Redux. This one looks great enough as it is.

This is probably the best FPS single player campaign you could possibly get right now in my opinion. It is loaded with atmosphere and immersion. Everything feels really nice and authentic. I'm playing on medium difficulty and the damage feels quite realistic. Enemies can kill you in a few shots, you kill enemies in a few shots. The amount of enemies you fight and the types of enemies all make perfect sense. The game has a great level of challenge.

My only complaint is that the stealth is missing a few mechanics that I think might be useful, like backstab kills. Other than that this game is AAA.

The story, characterse, environment and sounds are AMAZING! Do yourself a favor and pick this up. Check out the other reviews too if you want more detail, everyone seems to sum it up very well.

It is not really a great game, yet one enough to have some fun. The atmosphere is definitely perfect, but the difficulty being somewhat unbalanced can take away the joy from time to time. Also the cinematics are kind of amateur-ish.

Still, it is a fun ride and it is recommended.

ARTYUM!

First off, The gunplay and some of the actual guns flat out suck in this game, I don't care how drunk Artyum is or how you excuse it- the mechanics don't ever feel right. But the experience is well worth the hiccups.

Like the Witcher, it's based on a novel, so it arlready has inherent depth. It'll appeal to a majority of sci-fi and horror fans alike. I won't lie, this game is genuinely scary, with a lot of really bizarre and out-of-this world cut scenes. Don't skip them.

The graphics are still freakin' good by today's standards, and the sound and art direciton are top of their class in my opinion.

Keep in mind, ammo is limited and enemies are unforgiving if you let them get close or you inevitably miss with Artyum's shaky drunken hands.

There's a running joke around his part of the Metro that he's a "dead-eye." Uh-huh. >.> These womp rats will be standing right in front of you, and both shells from the trusty double barrel will inexplicably miss. Luckily, Artyum makes up for his lack of aim in his other latent abilities.

Also be sure to steer clear of the irradiated water, narrow ledges, and the green mushrooms that seem to cross genres and multiple platforms unabated.

LOOK OUT BEHIND JOO!

You will have a really intense experience, it is thrilling.
But if you are suffering from cardiac insufficiency, stay away or contact your medic first.

Seriously an atmospheric gem, quite challenging, but not frustrating.
And, what I love most, sometimes brain helps.
The story teaches a valuable lesson.
