FREE "Spell Again...Again!" Update for Magicka 2 (and some snazzy new DLC)

Hi Wizards!

Exciting news to share today! Today we introduce a huge re-vamp (totally no reference to Vlad there) of our spell system as well as release some exciting new DLC! First of all watch the below video and then read on for the full breakdown of what you can expect to see in today's update!

https://youtu.be/-ehtQ5F4L_U

Free Spell Update
- Improved Spell System and Effects. There are now even more spell combinations to make use of, most of the existing spells have had a graphical overhaul.

- Added Steam and Ice as Individual Elements. Just as it was in Magicka 1 these will take up one slot in the element queue:

  • Steam is made from Water and Fire
  • Ice is created from Water and Cold

- New Element! Poison! As above, this will take up one slot in the element queue. Poison is created from Death and Water.

- Added Poison State. When poisoned, the target will take damage over time. Damage done is dictated by the target's total health and the amount of Poison applied, the target will also become slowed. The poisoned state can be extended by applying more Poison to the target. The poisoned state can be removed by applying the Life element.

- Changed Ice Projectiles. Pure Ice is now a channeled spell, while Ice + Earth will work as it did before the change.

- Changed Projectile Charge Time. Earth and Ice + Earth have had their charge time reduced, meaning they will reach full effect faster. Damage for these spells has been re-balanced to work with this change.

- Re-balanced Mines. Mines now deal more base damage and reach their full damage faster.

- Changed Earth and Ice armor to also Reduce Push Received. When using an Earth or Ice armor, you will now also be more resistant to push effects . The amount of resistance depends on the amount of elements used when creating the armor.

- Changed Pure Shield. Duration has been increased, and will decrease faster when taking magic damage.

- Re-balanced Barriers and Elemental Walls. Physical barriers (Earth and Ice) now have a longer duration. They have also received a buff to the amount of damage they do when imbued with other elements.

- Overhauled the Challenge Experience. Reworked the challenge menu and added leader-boards.

There are also two bugfixes included:

- Mine Damage on Clients Fixed. Fixed an issue where clients mines would always deal damage as if they were fully charged.

- Fixed Sometimes not Getting Achievement for Completing Campaign. This issue should now be fixed and you should be able to get the achievements.

New DLC!

The Magicka 2 Gates of Midgård Challenge Pack ($3.99) A set of three new Challenge Maps, perfect for sampling new spells

The Magicka 2 Three Cardinals Robe Pack ($4.99) A stylish new selection of wizard-wear (not stain resistant; highly flammable; do not eat). Three robe and item sets are included, each with their own theme.

Steam Big Picture

A játékról

    • OS: Windows XP/Vista/7 (32- or 64-bit)
    • Processor: Intel® Pentium® IV 2.4 GHz or AMD 3500+
    • Memory: 2 GB RAM

Magicka is one of my favorite games, and one of the few that does a good job making you feel like a wizard.

The Good:

The crown jewel of Magicka's design is its spell creation system. It was not the first video game to allow you to design spells by selecting the path, area of effect, effects, and intensities. The Elder Scrolls: Arena had that in 1994, and there may be earlier examples I don't know about. It may be the first to allow you to create spells on the fly. It is also noteworthy for having no limits based on a mana pool or cooldowns. Instead, the main balancing forces are enemy resistances and the destructive power of your own spells. It's very easy to make a mistake and kill yourself or your allies.

Magicka is also well known and loved for its voice acting. Everyone speaks a mix of broken Swedish and jibberish. Vlad is an over the top Romanian vampire in denial. Death and Fafnir also sound great. I would love to know what sort of processing they performed on their voices.

Magicka has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. It's bombastic, complex, and memorable. Unfortunately it may be hard to appreciate with it often being drowned out by the sounds of the chaos around you.

The Bad:

Magicka is very buggy, even by modern PC gaming standards. Crashes and hangs are common. Weapons and staves, which may be unique, frequently clip through the map and disappear into the void forever. Players lose connection in online games often. The DLC is even worse. The Stars Are Left has an unpatched bug on the last level, where if you don't pass through the doors in the order the developers expected you to, not only does it crash, but it corrupts your save so you have to start that DLC over. The fact that is still unpatched is shameful, by the way.

Difficulty does not scale based on the number of players. The main game isn't that difficult to get through solo, but some of the DLC is very hard without a full party. I found the final fights in Dungeons and Daemons and The Stars Are Left to be impossible to solo.

This game really can't be taken seiously, with all of its references to other movies and games, and dry comedy THIS IS SPARTA!!!! . Just got an Assualt Rifle in a fantasy game, somehow. Comedic story-telling aside, Magicka's elemental magic system ironically has a facinating science behind it, with many combinations of the 8 different types of Magic (Lightning, Water, Life, Arcane, Cold, Fire, Earth, and Shield). The game allows you to mix together different spells to form more potent and lethal spells (Water+Fire=Steam, Water+Cold=Ice), as well as enchant your weapon, cast upon yourself, or create an area of effect. With a "Magicks" spellbook, the game allows you to increase your speed, confuse an enemy, or summon a thunderstorm, and many others. The game also rewards and punishes you for different enemies, as you can electrocute enemies doused in water or wearing metal armor, or freeze wet enemies, or burn tree spirit golem things.
I enjoy playing this game, and would definitely recomend or even buy Magicka for a friend.

TL;DR, mix spells and burn things to the ground.

Ice+Ice+Ice+Ice+Earth = ONE HIT K.O.

Magicka is a cooperative, top-down action game where players use fusions of different elements to cast custom attacks or "Magicks," the game's equivalent of spells. This game is best for cooperative play; I wouldn't buy it for single player. I had very mixed feelings about this game overall and am not sure whether or not to recommend it.

Pros:
+Really unique and entertaining combat system. There are eight "elements": arcane, heal, water, lightning, cold, fire, rock, and shield. The player buffers any combination of these elements of their choosing (experimentation is part of the game) and casts it as an attack to see what happens. Attacks can be cast in a specific direction or as an AOE attack in all directions. Elements can also be cast on oneself; some examples of this would be using combinations with shield or heal on yourself. In addition to this, there are a series of "Magicks," which are basically a pre-determined order of elements; creating the specific order allows the player to cast that Magick. I really liked this combat system and in my opinion it was the game's saving grace. There is lots of experimentation available and each Magick has its own cool effect.
+Above average amount of content for a $10 game. The story mode took my friend and I over 12 hours apparently, although we were probably a little slow. There is a versus mode and survival challenge as well as some support for online play (although I haven't tested it).

Cons:
-The humor is dumb. It had its funny moments but was also kind of... meh.
-There isn't much artistic value to the game. The menu art is not particularly attractive and the silly story leans completely on the humor... see the previous bullet point.
-The game is pretty buggy. There is one bug in particular that causes a level to crash in the same spot every time. If you don't know the trick for getting past this bug, it basically means the game is impossible to complete. Even if you Google it and use the trick, it means skipping a battle where you are supposed to unlock one of the best Magicks. The opportunity to learn that Magick is permanently lost. This is not the only annoying bug, but it's definitely the worst one. NOTE: See the end of the review for the trick for getting past this glitch.
-The game's menu navigation is a nightmare. Honestly, the menus in this game are just a pain in the ♥♥♥ to navigate. There aren't any real bugs, it's just bad user-friendliness. The first couple times I played this game the biggest challenge was getting past the startup menu.
-The difficulty is not well balanced. One boss will be mega hard, the next will be a walk in the park. Some of the bosses have some "trick" or special combination of elements that makes them super easy, but if you don't find that special trick they are annoyingly hard. One of the game's bosses in particular was nearly impossible for my friend and I, and then out of sheer luck we ended up suddenly winning. We merely got lucky, having picked one particular combo of elements, and suddenly the boss became a one-hit kill.
-The game has a the makings of a party game; it's designed so there will be occasional team kills in humorous ways. Some of the enemy attacks are designed to be unfair or OP to compensate for the fact that any player can revive a teammate instantly after their death. This is all fine; if done correctly it leads to a humorous and fun casual experience. But when some of the unbalanced parts of the game (see previous bullet point) come to play, these humorous elements turn from entertaining to tiresome and annoying.

All in all, I thought this game created a unique and fun style of gameplay. The way players buffer up elements in an order of their choosing is a lot of fun. But other than that the game really has very little going for it. I was heavily undecided whether or not to recommend it, but overall I think the cons outweigh the pros.

For getting past the crash glitch: This glitch happens in a swampy looking area. You reach a rundown old church. When you enter the church, a difficult battle ensues, where the best way to win the battle is to grab the Magick at the edge of the room, which allows you to summon friendly zombies. If you win this battle and exit, the game crashes, and restarting brings you back to the last checkpoint, in front of the church. The way my friend and I got past this bug (after having it crash on us multiple times) is by teleporting (there is a teleport Magick) through a stone wall on the right side of the church. I didn't come up with this, I found it online. This is the equivalent of coming out on the other side after the battle, but it means you can never unlock the Magick hidden in the church.
